PM to inaugurate world half marathon NEW DELHI, Oct 2: In keeping with its high-profile status, the 13th IAAF world half marathon would be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here tomorrow. "The Prime Minister will open the race, the first to be hosted by an Asian city," co-chairman of the organising committee and Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi told reporters here. Kalmadi said the race will be beamed live in about 100 countries. "The authorities have provided three defence helicopters for tv coverage," he said. "We want to project India around the world as an appealing sports capital and tourist destination," he said. International Assoociation of Athletics Federation president Lamine Diack said: "Asia will be the centre of focus for the next six years for world athletics with major meets lined up, beginning with Fukuoka, Japan hosting the World Cross Country Championships next April to the New Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010." Diack said this was only the second time that the world half marathon was moving outside Europe. "There will 107 men and 67 women athletes participating from 60 countries," Diack confirmed. Earlier, there were reports of 64 federations entering the championships. (PTI) |
Event to see unprecedented technological innovation Barring sporadic exceptions, sports in India have failed to embrace technology but it would be a different scenario when the 13th IAAF World Half Marathon Championship gets underway here tomorrow. More than 300 marathoners participating in the competition tomorrow will have a chip in their running shoes and their movements will be monitored throughout the 21-km route, Indian Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) president Suresh Kalmadi told UNI. "Seiko will be keeping track of the runners and they have the device in place to record every split seconds movement. Epson is also working with us and they would be providing all the graphics. From technological point of view, this would be an unprecedented event," he said. Meanwhile, to ensure comprehensive coverage, three helicopters would be hovering in the sky, capturing the movements of the runners and that would provide a birds eye view of the race, he added. International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) would be providing the technical expertise for the event, he said. "Altogether, 600 experts would be there to monitor the event and a delegation of more than 100 IAAF experts are already in the town. This is the first time that an Asian city will be hosting the event and from all aspects, its going to be a milestone for Indian sports," Mr kalmadi added. (UNI) |
Politicians come and go, sports will go on forever NEW DELHI, Oct 2 : British double Olympic Champion Sebastian Coe today said sports had a unifying ability and must not be used to meet cheap political ends. "I am always worried when sport is used$in a way, in areas to do what the politicians want to do. It is very easy to use srort for cheap`response, but it is a wrong vehicle," Sail Coe who won bagk/to-back titles in the 1500m event in 1980 and 1984 olympic games. Coe, who is in city as Jury of Appeal for the 13th World Half Marathon Championships tomorrow, cited the Indo-Pak cricket series as an example of how sport could help bring people together. "Sport has an ability to unify, to help in situations of political complexity, as it helped between Pakistan and India through the reimplementation of cricket. "Sport helps maintaining contact- and`when we stop sport, it creates a pressure for change. The last thing we want is countries being isolated. Politicians come and go, political systems come and go, sport is a permanent fixture," he said. Coe is one of the greatest mile runners in athletics history. He broke a dozen world records in his career but is remembered more for defying Margaret Thatchers call for boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games. Athletics would always be indebted to Coe for that courageous act, because that games and the next in Los Angeles witnessed the greatest rivalry on track, between him and Steve Covett. (REUTERS) |

Life is about to get tougher, says Mourinho HARLINGTON, England, Oct 2 : Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho believes arsenal, unbeaten for 47 league matches over 16 months, will find life tougher as the season progresses. With seven matches played the two teams are the last remaining unbeaten sides in the Premier League with arsenal top on 19 points followed by Chelsea who have 17. Arsenal are at home to Charlton Athletic today while liverpool visit Stamford Bridge tomorrow. Mourinho, though, implied yesterday that Arsenal had enjoyed a relatively easy start, adding: "Soon, they will be coming up against teams like Manchester United with more possibilities." He said that when Arsenal lose their unbeaten record they will find even the less exalted teams harder to beat. "When they lose a game other teams will be encouraged. At the moment, english teams have a bit of a blockage about arsenal. They think beating them is not possible." Mourinho was in an ebullient mood after Chelseas 3-1 win over European Champions porto, his former club, in the champions league on Wednesday. (REUTER) Federer stretched to the limit in win over Paradorn BANGKOK, Oct 2 : World number one roger federer was stretched to the limit by fourth-seeded Thai Paradorn Srichaphan before edging a 7-5 2-6 6-3 victory in the Thailand open semi-finals today. Paradorn, who broke down in tears with the disappointment of losing a quarter-final in last years inaugural Thailand Open, battled all the way with the outcome in doubt until the final minutes. "Im sorry to beat paradorn in Thailand," said Federer. "I hope he wins the tournament some day. We had so many great points and it was a great crowd. "I think thats why we played so well. You can feel the fans behind paradorn and i think thats why he played with such confidence." Federer had to fight off a break point in the opening game, but then broke Paradorn to lead 2-0. However, the Thai used his greater strength and sweeping groundstrokes to counter Federers artistry. The Australian, Wimbledon and U.S. Open Champion went on to lead 5-2 and hold two set points but Paradorn saved those with a service winner and an airborne smash, and then broke as Federer served at 5-3. Although Srichaphan saved another set point at 5-4 and a fourth at 6-5, he finally surrendered the set by netting a forehand volley. Paradorn showed even more conviction in the second set while Federer slipped into a period of largely unforced errors, and two breaks levelled the match at one set all. In the final set, Paradorn saved a break point at 0-1 and then stayed on level terms until Federer led 4-3. Some heavy returns then left Paradorn trailing 0-40, but after recovering to hold game point he made three crucial errors. On the first, he left a return that fell in, and he followed that misjudgment by netting a backhand volley after a long rally and then hitting a backhand drive wide to give Federer the crucial break for 5-3. The Swiss then served out to love to reach his 10th final of the year. Federer will face either second seed Andy Roddick or third seed Marat Safin in Sundays final. (REUTERS) |
