Heritage for posterity

Sir,

This has reference to the editorial 'Watch this city' D.E Nov. 23. Ladakh in known for its unique cultural heritage. Being cut off from the rest of the world for most part of the year due to geographical and topographical factors, it has been able to maintain its uniqueness with regard to dress, food, language and other ways of living. However, with the influx of foreign tourists and media onslaught, it is witnessing gradual cultural dilution. Though the old generation swears by the past glory, the new generation seems a lit bid uncomfortable. This is due to the fact that they are witness to changes sweeping across the globe.

The more the people are subjected to outside influence, the more will be dilution. However, the change should not be taken in a negative sense. If the society has to move forward, it has to interact with outside forces.

Otherwise, the community will remain backward and isolated. But it shall remain our priority to retain the positive aspects of our heritage for posterity.

Achieving International standard -ISO

Sir,

Achieving (ISO) International standard organisation certification (9001:2000)- a Global Quality certification by the University of Jammu as published in D.E is really a great matter of pleasure for all of us because such a certification would help in improving the academic excellence and would attract foreign students towards (JU) and will ensure mutual exchange of programmes etc. & is a great achievement in deed. The credit goes to the dedicated work of the Vice-Chancellor Jammu University Amitabh Mattoo and his whole team of Teachers, Registrar, Conveners & others. But achieving this standard should not be the ultimate goal of the University of Jammu but should try to work with more dedication & zeal to earn more & more.

My heartiest congratulations to whole the team and wish the institution to progress by leaps and bounds in all the fields and directions.

Construct speed-breakers in Trikuta Nagar

Sir,

The Trikuta Nagar roads are becoming unsafe due to the heavy rush of vehicles and the rash driving by the drivers. As a result of it, road accidents are on a rise in Trikuta Nagar.

Recently, one Jawahir Lal Koul (Retd DFO) H.No. 51, Sec. 1 Trikuta Nagar was run down by a white Maruti Gypsy early morning on Saturday Nov. 20 at Bahu Plaza Trikuta Nagar road which is generally used by morning walkers upto Green Belt Park end.

Such cases will keep on occurring, unless concrete action is taken in this regard. Therefore, the PWD (R&B)/JDA is strongly implored to set-up speed-breakers on this stretch of road at appropriate distances to avert such incidences of such nature in the near future.

Checking rural migration

Sir,

This refers to the news item 'Pak PM calls on Kalam' published in the Daily Excelsior on Nov. 25, 2004.

During the conversation, the President of India Mr. Kalam and Pak PM discussed ways to fight the poverty in both the countries.

Poverty is indeed a big problem in both the countries. The people in both the countries are suffering on account of abject poverty. Most of the people do not have access to medicine and modern facilities in health sector. The high cost of drugs is beyond the reach of common man. The people live a life of misery and penury. Unable to get basic amenities of life in villages, the villagers are migrating towards cities. The consequences arising out of migration leave their impact both on villages and urban centres. Cities get overcrowded. Slums crop up here and there. As a result the living standard and hygienic conditions deteriorate day by day. In turn, socio-economic problems arise in villages.

The families lose the earning hands to city, and in the process some families get disintegrated.

Therefore it is demand of the hour that rural migration should be stopped at the earliest. And the project ''Pura'' undertaken by the President of India, it is hoped will prove an effective mechanism to check the migration of rural masses.
