Lifting ban on jobs

Sir,

I hail the announcement of the Prime Minister lifting the ban on jobs imposed by the MoU between the Centre and the state Govt. Infact, I was the first to raise this issue in my keynote address on the occasion of celebration of inclusion of Dogri language in the 8th schedule at Abhinav Theatre where, among others, Madam Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh Ji, Mufti Saheb and Pt. Mangat Ram Sharma were present. I had said the following:-

"In the matter of providing jobs to the educated unemployed youth of the State the record of the coalition Govt. of the State has been disappointing. Thousands of medical, engineering and agriculture graduates are without jobs, because of the doors of the statutory recruiting agencies, the PSC and the Service Selection Board, have been shut against them. The excuse is some mystical MoU between the Centre and the State.

I appeal to the State Govt. to lift the ban on Govt Jobs as has been done recently by the Rajasthan Govt."

In her public speech at Parade Ground, Madan Sonia Ji supported my plea. Howevers, Mufti Sahab had some reservations on the subject. In a reception at Raj Bhawan a few days letter, Mufti Saheb said to me, "Puri Saheb, I wanted to reply to the point raised by you at the function at Abhinav Theatre, but I couldn't due to paucity of time."

Subsequently, when I read in the newspapers that during their meetings with the Prime Minister, both the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister repeatedly requested him to withdraw the MoU putting a ban on jobs, I felt very happy.

But with Prime Minister's public announcement today that the MoU will not apply to the J&K State, my joy knew no bounds. I felt as if a dream had come true.

Educational ills

Sir,

The statement 'The teacher fraternity is suffering on account of pay anomoly' (D.E 12.11.04) reminded me an eye opener skit: A teacher was questioned for misleading students that the river Ganga originates from Patiala. Teacher's answer used to be when I am not paid fully, why should I provide complete information? 'However, teachers should do their sacred duty honestly.

During my schooling days too there was an inadequacy of staff' in M.B High School (Now Govt. S S School), Pathankot. A Science teacher was assigned to teach us English. He devoted extra time in teaching English. Similarly, another migrant teacher from Peshawar was asked to learn and then to teach Punjabi. Even in the P.G Deptt. of Punjabi after the expiry of Dr. Bhupinder Singh Soodan who used to teach poetry, the only three surviving teachers distributed his work-load among themselves. I had never taught poetry. However, I could teach Bhai Vir Singh's text to the satisfaction of student. This experience made me poet also.

Actually, holistic approach to Education means pure (holy) in too (whole) covering all aspects of education. In 1947-48, Mahatma Gandhi's Khadi movement, Agriculture and games were compulsory subjects in our aforesaid school. We had to purchase mini spinning wheel to spin cotton into yard. We were tough to grow more plants & trees as a part of agriculture. I was not interested in games. Even then it was obligatory to attend the class of PTI (Sports-Teacher) in the ground. During those days hockey winner was from Pathankot whom we felicitated.

Recently I visited my same school again where there is a computer block, library needs of the modern age. The J&K Govt. to should take necessary action in providing adequate trained teaching staff & infrastructure, information technological facilities but without pay anomalies to escape skits about low paid teachers.

Yours etc...
