Prof Gupta asks State Govt to concede
employees’ demands

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 19: Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has impressed upon the State Government to immediately concede the demands of the employees to avert an agitation by the working class.

In a press statement, he said that there was no justification now for not conceding the demand for merger of 50 per cent DA in basic pay of Government employees, regularisation of daily wagers and release of two installments of DA when the Prime Minister has announced a big economic package of Rs 24,000 crores.

Stating that the demands of employees were quite genuine and these should have been met even before the announcement of this package, Prof Gupta alleged that there were elements in the ruling hierarchy who intended to create uncalled for tensions to seek more and more funds from the Centre. It is highly deplorable that the coalition of the Congress and PDP did not bother about the difficulties of the State staff and daily rated workers, whose families are virtually facing starvation, he said.

This is inhuman on part of the Congress and its ruling allies that they have no sense to take care of the plight of the starving workers and also not prepared to limit the size of their ministry which is a big burden on the State exchequer, Prof Gupta added and reiterated that the Government should immediately release the installments of DA especially when there has been price rise during the past five months after the installation of Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre.

BJP cautions Centre against Musharraf’s Kashmir plan

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 19: Terming the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf’s plan on Kashmir divisive and dangerous that would lead to balkanisation of pluralistic, and democratic India, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed the hope that the UPA Government at Centre would think hundred times before discussing this plan.

Briefing newsmen here , this afternoon, the BJP vice president and spokesman Prof Hari Om and Party general secretary and National Executive Member Ashok Khajuria said that the BJP delegation which called on Dr Singh yesterday made it clear to him.

They said the delegation while appreciating the process of dialogue, maintained that in a democracy like India there was no space for those with blood on their hands.

They said the Party was not averse to dialogue but at the same time it was opposed to the idea of Jammu and Ladakh being taken far granted.

It also advocated for application of Indian Constitution to the J&K in full, minus the Article 370.

The Party leaders however criticised the UPA Government and termed the PM’s visit an eye wash for Jammu. The people of the region have been ignored in the economical package announced by Dr Singh, alleged Prof Hari Om.

He also alleged that instead of boosting the moral of Jammu people by announcing some special package for the region, Prime Minister created a confusion among the people of region.

He said Jammu people were enthusiastic that on the pattern of Kashmir package will be announced for the region but they felt totally betrayed as no such announcement was made here.

Lashing out at Congress Party Ashok Khajuria was highly critical of the style of functioning of the party leaders during the Prime Minister’s visit to J&K. He alleged that the Raj Bhavan Jammu was converted into the Seven Janpath and the Party should seek apology for the same.

Mr Khajuria alleged that Prime Minister did not make any specific mention about the people of Jammu, Kashmiri migrants and border migrants.

He said the construction of two room sets is not any solution to their problem. Centre as well as State Government was not concerned towards their plight.

Terming the visit a flop show, he said it was drama staged by Congress Party. He said the real way of tackling the Jammu and Kashmir situation is that Government should honestly find a solution to the problem keeping the national interest in view.

Natrang stages 'Panja'

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 19: Today’s play ‘Panja’, staged in connection with Natrang Theatre Festival 2004, demonstrated the brilliance of a professional team efforts in all departments like acting, stage craft, lighting and sound effect. Originally, written in English by W W Jacobs entitled ‘Monkey’s Paw’, the play was directed by Anil Tickoo.

‘Panja’ is a magic story which is neatly contrived and is capable of inducing us to suspend our disbelief as long as we are in the world of superstition. The story highlights the unsatisfied desire of a greedy family for using the ‘Panja’, for getting their wishes granted, ignored the fact that repercussions of its use would bring disaster in the long run.

The Mehra family lived happily but with the acquiring of the ‘Panja’ they become greedy, ignoring the warnings. The fulfillment of Mr Mehra’s wish proves disastrous and heart rending. There is element of tragic irony in the play for the magical powers of ‘Panja’ destroy the peace but their wish is granted which comes in the form of compensation for the death of their only son.

Totally shattered they use the Panja for granting the second wish on seeing their son alive again. The father did so only to be terrified by the loud knocks on the doors believing that the dead son had come back. He at once took up the ‘Panja’ and wished that his son be dead again and rest in peace. The play ends on a pathetic note evoking sympathies for the couple whose dreams had been shattered only by the magic ‘Panja’.

On Saturday, November 20, 2004, two plays, ‘Neend Kyon Raat Bhar Nahi Aati’ and ‘Hawalat’ would be staged on the ninth day of Natrang Theatre festival at the same venue.

IKA’s Toronto conclave to focus on Kashmir

Excelsior Special Correspondent

SRINAGAR, Nov 19: The second intra-Kashmir peace conference, being organised by International Kashmir Alliance (IKA), shall examine ways and means to rehabilitate and support social, cultural and economic interaction between the people of all the five regions of Jammu and Kashmir state. National Conference president, Omar Abdullah, BJP state chief, Dr Nirmal Singh, CPI(M) state secretary, Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami and Ladakhi leader, Pinto Norbo, have been invited to represent Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh regions.

Over a dozen political leaders, representing different parties and organisation in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and the Northern Areas of Gilgit and Baltistan are also participating in the two-day conference being held in Toronto on November 27th and 28th.

The IKA vice chairman, Mumtaz Khan, said in a statement delivered here today that the second intra-Kashmir conclave would discuss all the tracks of peace diplomacy to seek a resolution to the Kashmir conflict. He said that the gathering would focus on how to promote the interests of the people of all the five regions of the undivided State of Jammu and Kashmir, as also those of the people of India and Pakistan. He said that a number of speakers were expected from the UK, European Union states, USA, Canada and other countries.

Mumtaz Khan said that the conference would be in follow up to the IKA’s first Intra-Kashmir Conference held in London on May 29-30 this year. He said that the IKA was vociferously supportive of all peace efforts and confidence building measures provided the same were aimed at benefiting the ordinary Kashmiri, not the individuals or groups who have developed vested interest in Kashmir’s turbulence.

"We have always maintained that violence and gun is no answer to the Kashmir problem or a resolution to the bloody conflict. We are pleased to see the positive tone and tenor from Islamabad and New Delhi while hoping that the current statements and CBMs would not prove to be an eye-wash", Mumtaz Khan said. He was optimistic that serious and genuine efforts would be made to seek a just and acceptable solution to the conflict. "We believe that social and cultural interaction among the divided people of Kashmir, India and Pakistan should precede all other theories in order to make the ongoing initiatives meaningful", he added.

He said that the get-together would focus on the fundamental issues of peoples’ social and cultural interaction and support efforts of the Indo-Pak leadership to resume the bus service between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad. He welcomed the Pakistani President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s proposal of identifying and demilitarising the Kashmiri regions but insisted that any reference to a communal division of Kashmir would only complicate the issue and threaten to delay the peace process.

"We encourage all shades of opinion to raise their voices for people-to-people interaction and to liberalise the borders so as to end the violence", he added.
