Develop Jammu as independent
tourist destination Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 15: Jammu Hotel Restaurant and Bar Association today urged the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to announce such a package for Jammu which can help in making this region as independent tourist destination rather than gateway to Kashmir. Talking to media-persons, president of the Association H S Anand said " Jammu region continued to be ignored in the packages of incentives provided by the Centre because on one side the Central leadership says that the package is for whole of the State and on the other side diverts the whole funds to Kashmir valley through the jugglery of words in the official documents". During Dr Manmohan Singhs visit to Jammu alongwith Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on January 18, 2004, it was brought to their notice that Jammu region was blatantly ignored in the packages granting by the Centre to the tourism industry in the State, Mr Anand disclosed and said that now when Congress heads the Government at the Centre and even in J&K, it becomes its duty to provide justice to Jammu region and initiate steps to make this region as independent tourist destination rather than gateway to Kashmir. "Like Kashmir valley, Jammu region too abounds in potential tourist resorts. The only difference is that unlike Kashmir the tourism potential of Jammu has not been explored and exploited", Ravi Mahajan said and added that despite having rich cultural heritage Jammu region has not been brought on the pilgrimage map of the country. Mahajan said that Jammu regions dont require Tourism Ministry but Cultural and Heritage Promotion Ministry on the pattern of Rajasthan to establish its own identity. "From 1996 onwards, the packages of concessions, relief and incentives provided to the tourism related trades have been confined to Kashmir. In Jammu many hotels and establishments suffered a lot but no incentive and relief has been provided", he alleged. General secretary of the Association Kuldip Wahi said that the PMs package for Jammu region should have provision for revival of hotel industry, development of all the tourist sports, heritage and historical places and establishment of development authorities for the complete and best possible development of spots, which have the potential to make Jammu as independent tourist destination. |

Musharraf's plan aimed at balkanization of India: PK Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 15: Expressing serious concern over the recent proposal of Pakistan President, Gen. Pervez Musharraf on Jammu and Kashmir, Panun Kashmir termed it a part of Dixon plan aimed at balkanization of India. Talking to media persons, PK chief Dr Ajay Chrangoo, All Kashmiri Pandit Solidarity Conference (AKPSC) president, O N Trisal, Prof B L Fotedar, Member Advisory Committee PK and Satish Sher cautioned the Government of India and people of the country against the Musharrafs Kashmir proposal. They said granting of semi independence or independence to Kashmir under this proposal will result in disintegration of the country. Expressing concern over the UPA Governments policies viz a viz Kashmir, Dr Chrangoo said the confusing statements are emanating from different quarters at Government level since the Musharrafs announcement. He said soon after assuming office the UPA Government had taken a bold stand on Kashmir that the dialogue will be held under the four walls of Indian Constitution and Shimla Agreement will be basis of parlays with Pakistan. But the sudden shift in the stand of the Government of India reveals that somewhere it is making compromise on Kashmir. He, while referring to the porous border with Pakistan said it can be dangerous and prove counter productive to the national cause when virtually war is going on with the neighbor. He also criticised the Centres move on the withdrawal of troops from Valley saying this is fraught with serious consequences as infiltration continues and the militancy incidents have further increased . Referring to recent statement of Army Chief that infiltration will double he said under these circumstances it is a blunder to say that the situation has improved. He expressed the hope that GOI will not take any step which will retreat or dilute the sovereignty of the country while referring to the two day back incident that took place at Nadi Marg. Strongly advocating for the separate homeland for the Pandits in Valley, Mr Trisal said this is the only solution so far as the internal dimension of Kashmir problem is concerned. He said there should be no compromise with Pak over Kashmir which is the integral part of India and the GOI should exert pressure on Pak and ask it to handover the control of POK to India which has been forcibly occupied by that country. The PK leaders also urged the GOI to initiate measures to de-recognize all the processes within the country aimed at legitimizing the Dixonian vision on Kashmir. Besides they demanded a dialogue be initiated with Panun Kashmir as a solution to the problem as well as retrieval of secular nation building in Kashmir. They strongly advocated for institution of a Ministry of Relief and Rehabilitation to directly address the various aspects of genocide of Kashmiri Pandits including its economic deprivation. For restoration of confidence in the community they demanded a package of 25, 000 jobs for the KP youth. |

Gupta terms PMs decision as pre-mature, ill-timed Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 15: Former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has described the decision of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to reduce strength of troop in J&K as pre-mature and ill-timed. Prof Gupta said the first priority should be to check the continued killings of innocent persons by pressurising Pakistan to stop cross-border terrorism and at home security net-work be further upgraded by strengthening Village Defence Committees and free hand to forces to flush out the armed ultras, especially the foreigners who are making a hell of life in many areas. He said NDA Government has provided all possible help for strengthening the VDCs and reimbursed crores of rupees to the State as security related expenditure but it was spent in constructing bungalows for Ministers and purchasing luxury items for certain politicians. Assailing the timing of the decision for reduction in troops, Prof Gupta said winter months are the timing when terrorists are at the receiving end as they cannot stay in frost areas and come down to villages. He said reducing the troops would lead to domination of ultras and they would also get breathing time for re-grouping. About the dialogue Prof Gupta said such moves should come from Pakistan to stop proxy war instead of India opting for chasing a wild goose by risking the lives of innocent people, who are getting killed daily but for cross border terrorism. He appealed the Prime Minister to tread the path of peace process very cautiously keeping in view the experience of the past. |
