Zaheer striving to stage a come back

BANGALORE, June 12: Keeping in constant touch with Pakistan top pace bowler Wasim Akram, Indian medium-pacer Zaheer Khan is longing to stage a comeback into the team.

Another injury-prone pace bowler of the country besides Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan is now sweating it out at the fitness camp for pace bowlers here and is keen to be back in the team.

Talking to newspersons today, he said, "for any player, staging a comeback is very difficult and I am analysing as how not to get injured as well as maintain my length and speed."

"Currently, I am fit. What is needed is more bowling practice, and I am attending to it," he added.

Zaheer, who has been struggling with injuries, was forced to opt out due to knee injury after playing the first Test against Australia and for the same reason could not be with the team after two one-dayers against Pakistan.

Zaheer has played 29 tests and has taken 83 wickets giving away, on an average, 35.21 runs. In one dayers, he has claimed 125 wickets from 82 matches with an average of 26.08.

Zaheer had a torn hamstring, which forced him out of the Test matches against Australia. He, however, recovered to play the one-day series against Pakistan. However, his recovery was short-lived, as he again returned to India due to injury, after playing two one-dayers against Pakistan. (UNI)

Fans detained after scale fence at England training

LISBON, June 12: Four England fans spent a day in police custody after scaling a fence to watch an England training session today, raising questions about security measures at Euro 2004.

Bob Mardle, his 19-year-old son Luke and two other fans stacked two tyres together, grabbed a tree branch and hoisted themselves into Benfica’s former stadium in Lisbon.

They managed to take a few photographs before being apprehended by police.

"When the police came on the scene they were shocked. They didn’t know what to do. They clearly weren’t prepared for ‘what if’," Mardle senior said.

"We’re nobodies, but we could have been four somebodies. We proved yesterday that if someone really wanted to do something, they could," Luke agreed.

However the father and son from London had nothing but praise for the Portuguese Police who steered clear of handcuffing them or locking them in a cell. They even had a three-course lunch in the police canteen.

"We had ruby-red, succulent strawberries and the police were joking that we would jump over the fence tomorrow to get more of their good food," Mardle senior said.

They appeared before a judge in the afternoon and were let off with a "lecture".

"I think they (the authorities) were a bit embarrassed. We could have said we were just testing your security and it’s crap," Mardle senior said.

A police spokeswoman said she had no knowledge of the particular incident, saying only: "If they were arrested it was because there was security. Someone was there to do their job."

The three-week tournament, which features 16 teams playing in eight cities, kicks off later on Saturday with hosts Portugal playing greece in Porto. It ends on July 4 with the final in Lisbon. (AGENCIES)

Spain seek rare flying start

FARO (Portugal), June 12: Spain aim to bury their reputation as slow starters in big tournaments by beating Russia in their opening Euro 2004 March today.

Thousands of Spanish fans make the short journey across the border hoping that their side can finally live up to their potential and set the country on course for its first major trophy since they the 1964 European championship.

Russia are aiming to end a miserable run in European championships in which they have failed to win any of their last seven matches. That poor run started when the country, then part of the Soviet Union, lost the 1988 final to the Dutch.

Spain’s main concern will be to improve on their early form at Euro 2000, when they lost their opener against Norway and only just managed to make the quarter-finals.

"The most important thing is to win the first game," striker Raul said. "That way, the morale in the camp will stay high."

Raul will be partnered up front by Fernando Morientes, who has scored 22 goals in 33 appearances for Spain and is back in form after a successful loan spell at Monaco.

Russia have had problems in their preparations and an end to their winless streak would be a surprise.

Centre-backs Viktor Onopko and Sergei Ignashevich were ruled out before the tournament, along with Yegor Titov, suspended after failing a drugs test.

Left back Dmitry Sennikov and playmaker Dmitry Loskov are both nursing injuries and that could mean a reshuffle, with midfielder Alexei Smertin dropping back into central defence.

Coach Georgy Yartsev has indicated he would be happy to take a point from the match.

"For me, any result apart from a defeat would be positive," he told reporters.(AGENCIES)
