Homeland the only option I

Sir,

The recently concluded All India Kashmiri Samaj ( AIKS ) conclave at Jammu, marked by a lot of heat and debate, may have once again given the impression that there is bitter discord amongst the Kashmiri Pandits. But nothing can be farther from the truth. For what emerged was a near unanimity on, and a further reiteration of, that great reality that the Kashmiri Pandits will not accept any thing short of what they rightly deserve - that is the safety and security of a Homeland in the Valley. Though AIKS functionaries had deliberately excluded Panun Kashmir from the list of invitees they little imagined that the ghost, nay the gospel, of Homeland would cast its spell on all their deliberations. After all how long can one go one deceiving oneself as well as the whole community which has witnessed the worst genocide in post-independent India with hollow ideas .

Delhi Samiti, which had wavered for all these years, finally came out overwhelmingly with their support for Homeland. The other affiliates of AIKS gave tacit approval, as also some other organizations that were invited. Even the representatives of Jammu based parties drove the point home that Pandits can not return in conditions that prevail in the Valley or under the whimsical and viscous plans and programs of the present Govt.

But most important of all the AIKS itself did a turn around on some vital issues. It debunked its own stand on autonomy. That the AIKS president came to seeking homeland in the eventuality of a division of J&K betrays the realization in the mind of every Kashmiri Pandit, be he a recent exile or a former émigré, that howsoever much he might cherish reconciliation, amity and friendship with the majority community in the Valley , the powers that be will never want to see him rehabilitated with honor and dignity and that the only recourse for him is to seek and strive for a Homeland.

Sir,

This is with reference to the recent deliberations held by some prominent Kashmiri Pandit leaders at Jammu under the aegis of All India Kashmiri Samaj (AIKS) as regards the return to their homes and hearths in the Kashmir valley, and also about the process of dialogue and negotiations to be held, prior to their return, with the majority community (Muslims) there.

For the past fourteen years I have been watching all such debates manoeuvers of our community leaders, whenever and wherever they have a whim to hold them, only for a theoretical exhibition of their keen concern and agony of our present problems of up-rooting from our birth place. But, pragmatically, they have not been able to and nor shall they ever be able to, achieve anything for the betterment of their displaced brethern, either from the State or from the Central Governments, ruled by whatever political party or parties, in the past or at present.

Our leaders lack the tempo and perseverance of well-organized non-self -centered and dedicated and selfless path-finders, required for achieving a rightful objective.

Due to the qualities of real leadership in them, the people of Chhatisgarh, Jharkand and Uttaranchal have been able to get their own independent states, within the federal set up of Indian Union. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti has shown the way how the tables can be turned over, and their demand of a separate Telangana state has been accepted in the common Minimum Programme of the present ruling alliance at the center .

I, therefore, request all the KP leaders either to do something practically concrete and achievable or else, leave our young enterprising and qualified men and women alone to merge into and float smoothly in the vast Ocean of our country, India. If, they are getting economically well settled through their hard work and intellectual potential in the other parts of our country where they can have un-biased opportunity, our young generation shall never desire or dream of going back to the Kashmir valley.

Winds of change in Kashmir

Sir,

This is in response to the article "Open letter to Parvez Musharraf'' written by some students of Kashmir University and published in the Daily Excelsior on 15th June 2004. Much blood has been shed in J&K. The people are now fed up with the unabated violence, destruction of economy and the unique cultural traditions of J&K.

An open letter to Pervez Musharraf by some students of Kashmir University is an indication that the thinking of the common people of J&K especially the youths is undergoing a sea change. At last, the people of Kashmir have dared and gathered courage to raise open voice against non-sense activities of Pak supported militants. Had the people of Kashmir in the past voiced concern against the killing of innocent people by the terrorist the socalled Mujahids working for their masters across the border, the situation would have been quite different.

Now is the right time for the parents whose young children have been forced to take up arms to come out openly against the forces who are bent upon to keep the pot boiling in J&K for their selfish ends and their domestic consumption.

Amend Guest Control Order

Sir,

The initiative of the Government to cut the lavish spending during marriage and allied functions is quite good to reduce the burden on the weaker sections of the society. But the order needs to be updated keeping in mind the overall changing scenario. The limit on 'Baratis' should be extended upto 150, and the number of guest also to be 150. Total guests on the eve of the reception should be 300.

Likewise, number of dishes be fixed at 5 (non-vegetarian) and 8 in case in vegetarian excluding tea, coffee and cold drinks. Special rules and instructions should be there for them who want to entertain their guests with wine and other allied things keeping in mind the existing rules and regulations of the excise Deptt.

Moreover, the per capita income has also risen. Transport and hotel facilities have to be paid special attention. It may be remembered that people obey only those regulations which go according to their traditions and social norms otherwise they violate the same on one pretext or the other and then the same prove to be futile exercise.
