Sri Lanka claims one-run thriller over Australia DAMBULLA (Sri Lanka), Feb 22: Left-arm seam bowler Chaminda Vaas snared three wickets today as Sri Lanka claimed a thrilling one-run victory over Australia in their second one-day international. Batting first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka was all out for 245 in the final over before restricting Australia to 244 for five in its 50 overs. Chasing 246 for victory, Australia lost opening batsman Michael Clarke for a duck on the third ball of the innings. Clarke was caught by Upul Chandana at point off a Vaas ball. Opener Matthew Hayden and captain Ricky Ponting steadied Australia, compiling 148 runs from 189 balls for the third wicket. Ponting was caught by Vaas at deep-square-leg off legspinner Upul Chandana for 69. Ponting became just the third Australian player to score 7,000 runs in one-day cricket during his innings, which included four fours and a six. Ponting trails Mark Waugh with 8,500 runs and Stephen Waugh with 7,569 runs in the list of top Australian one-day cricket run-getters. Vaas produced immediate results after his recall to the attack in the 36th over, forcing Damien Martyn to deliver a catch to Marvan Atapattu at extra-cover. Vass finished with 3-48 and was awarded man of the match. Riding his luck after surviving a stumping chance while on 31, Hayden scored 93 runs from 116 balls, including five fours and a six. Sri Lankan umpire Peter Manel ruled Andrew Symonds out Leg Before Wicket in the 41st over, but later recalled him after consultations with Legealand. In the first innings, Atapattu and Sanath Jayasuriya combined for a solid 121-run partnership off 135 balls as Sri Lanka posted a 246-run target for Australia. However, Clarke snared five wickets to restrict Sri Lanka to 245 all out in the final over of the innings on a slow Rangiri Dambulla wicket. Atapattu was run out on 47 by a well directed underarm throw at the stumps by Ponting. Hard-hitter Jayasuriya faced 32 balls for his first boundary before scoring his 55 runs off 65 balls, including seven fours. It was Jayasuriyas 55th half-century. Symonds trapped Jayasuriya leg before in the 23rd over after conceding 13 runs in his first over. Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena put on a 70-run stand for the third wicket. Jayawardena departed for 38, caught by ponting at mid off from a Clarke ball. Sangakkara was dismissed for 39 in the 43rd over, triggering a collapse of six wickets for 29 runs. Romesh Kaluwitharana was run out for no score for a second time in the series. Clarke finished the innings on 5-35, while Brad Hogg bowled 10 economical overs for 35 runs. Sehwag engaged to Delhi maiden NEW DELHI, Feb 22: Set to open a new innings of his life, opener Virender Sehwag today got engaged to Delhi girl Arti Singh at a solemn ceremony here today. Sehwag, clad in a white suit, slipped the engagement ring into golden saree draped Artis finger at the function attended by close relatives and friends at City Park hotel, Pitampura. Himself a simple and reserve person off the field, the 24-year-old star cricketer was impressed with Artis down-to-earth nature and will tie the nuptial knot on April 22, four days after the Indian team returns from Pakistan, family sources said. The Prince of Najafgarh was stumped by the "homely" maiden from Delhi, who was also the "the unanimous choice of our family," they said. Arti, who belongs to a middle-class Jat, is in her early twenties and currenty pursuing a diploma course. "She would keep home for Viru," sources added. Sehwag is expected to be picked for the 40-day tour of Pakistan where India will play three Tests and a five-match one-day series. A security cordon by the Delhi Police and hotel security staff was thrown around the venue and media persons were not allowed to enter the hall where the ceremony took place. Dravidinternational sports personality of the year 2003 LONDON, Feb 22: Indias dependable batsman Rahul Dravid has won the Sony TVs International Sports Personality of the Year award for 2003. Dravid edged former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram and compatriot, ace tennis star Leander Paes, to win the coveted award at a gala function at the Hilton Park lane last night. "This is a very deserving award and Dravid is one of the great all-timers," former England captain Mike Gatting said receiving the award on Dravids behalf. Dravid, popularly called The Wall, is considered one of the technically most gifted batsmen in the world cricket. (UNI) |

LAHORE, Feb 22: The Pakistan Cricket Board is planning to lodge a protest with the Board of Control for Cricket in India over the violation of an agreement by Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya in announcing the itinerary of the India-Pakistan series in Kolkata yesterday. Normally, it is the host board that has the prerogative to release a tour itinerary. The BCCI chiefs move to release the schedule and hog the limelight has left his Pakistani counterparts embarrassed, according to a PCB source. PCB officials were in for a rude shock as they came here yesterday to address a press conference and saw television channels beaming live Mr Dalmiya announcing the tour schedule in Kolkata. Joginder Lal was nominated as chief patron of the club while Pawan Khajuria was patron. Narain Dutt was elected chairman and Mukesh Sharma general secretary. A full-time Fencing player, Rashid and Rajesh Kumar were top scorer from MAM College while Dheeraj Dogra added four. From Kathua College, Sanjeev Singh (Sr) and Sanjeev Singh scored five and four goals respectively while Rakesh Kumar netted two. Todays final was officiated by Sudesh Kumar, Gopal Dass, Dev Raj and PD Singh. Kathua boys fought for every point to their opponents from the city college but had to lose because of lack of experience. Reaching final was more than a victory for boys from district Kathua where there is hardly any activity in Handball. It may be recalled that other two city colleges, GGM Science College and Government SPMR College of Commerce, where there are atleast two Physical Training Instructors (PTIs) each are posted by the Government, lost before reaching the final. Kho-Kho tourney begins today: Annual inter-college Kho-Kho competitions in men section starts tomorrow at the University grounds. Lawn Tennis final on February 17: The long pending Lawn Tennis final of the inter-college competitions has now been scheduled for February 27 at the University ground. In the final, Degree College, Kathua will take on Post Graduate Departments. Athletics meet from March 9: The 32nd inter-college Annual Athletic meet, organised by the Department of Physical Education, will be held from March 9 to 11 at University ground. On the concluding day the prize distribution function of all the inter-college events, including the Athletic meet, will be organised at 4 pm at the same venue, said Assistant Director, Physical Education, M M Sharma. |

"On Pakistans invitation, the Indian cricketers are going there to play cricket and not for any war," Vajpayee told reporters here.
