Australia maul India to clinch tri-series in style

From Ashish Shukla

SYDNEY, Feb 8: A spineless display by their top order batsmen saw India being ground to dust for the second time in three days, as Australia once again justified their world champions’ tag by clinching the cricket tri-series trophy 2-0 in a hugely one-sided final match here today.

After equalling their best one-day score of 359, the Aussies displayed awesome form to dismiss the Indians for 151 in 33.2 overs and register a big 208-run win in the second match of the best-of-three finals.

India made a record they would like to forget quickly —their mauling in this day-night match at the Sydney cricket ground was their second worst show after the 245-run defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in Sharjah in 2000. The losing margin was also the eighth biggest in the history of the game.

Any hopes of India bouncing back after the seven-wicket thrashing in the first final at Melbourne on Friday vanished as soon as Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat. Their 359 for five was built around a 122-ball 126 by man-of-the-match Matthew Hayden and a late onslaught which saw them collect 111 runs in the last eight overs.

Andrew Symonds, with a 39-ball 66 and Michael Clarke (33 off 30 balls) shared 99 runs from 47 balls for the fifth wicket to put their side in the drivers’ seat.

India, whose defeat today was the 10th in 13 matches against Australia, were never in the hunt, losing their top six batsmen with just 59 on the board and ironically, in a star studded batting line-up, their top-scorer was Irfan Pathan who made 30.

Leander guides India to 3-2 victory

NEW DELHI, Feb 8: Leander Paes, once again, played the saviour’s role to perfection guiding India to a 3-2 victory in the Asia/Oceania group one tennis tie against the hosts New Zealand at Invercargill today.

According to information received here, Paes today recorded his third win in three days when he overcame rookie Kiwi Simon Rea 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 in the second reverse singles match to wrap up the tie.

New Zealand earlier made it 2-2 when Mark Nielson won the first reverse singles 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 over Vishal Punna.

On Friday, New Zealand’s Simon Rea had defeated Harsh Mankad 6-4, 6-1, 7-6(7-2) in the opening singles to fetch a lead for the hosts but Paes beat Mark Nielsen 6-2,6-3,7-6(7-2) to level the tie.

India took a 2-1 lead yesterday as Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi set up a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory over the pair of Mark Neilsen and debutant Matt Prentice.

India had beaten New Zealand 4-1 twice in the last two years. (UNI)

India lift maiden Asia Cup title

NEW DELHI, Feb 8: A rejuvenated India rose to the occasion in style beating favourites Japan by a solitary goal to lift their maiden women’s Asia Cup hockey title at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here today.

Striker Jasjeet Kaur sloted home the winner in the 64th minute after she snatched the ball from Chie Kimura on the 25 yard line and Thpanese Custodian stranded with a powerful hit to give the Indians a direct entry into the 2006 World Cup to be played in Spain.

Earlier, Asian Games champion China beat defending champions South Korea 3-0 on tie breaker for the bronze medal.

It was a brilliant all-round performance by the Indians, who came into the tournament with a modest target of at least finishing in the medals bracket, as they not only kept the fast moving Japanese at bay but also maintained an upper hand over their fancied opponents for most part of the 70 minutes.

Both the teams started cautiously but the Japanese quickly began to put pressure on the Indian defence through some probing runs.

Later, Indian Women’s Hockey Federation president Vidya stokes announced a cash award of Rs 5.15 lakh to the team. (PTI)

India finishes Aussie tour on dismal note

By Ravi Shastri

India were hit by an Aussie gale-force at the Sydney cricket ground on Sunday. The second final of the VB series was reminiscent of the World Cup final last year, the only difference being the margin of defeat which was bigger this time. As I have said earlier in the tournament, the Australians looked a couple of steps ahead of India in the one-day game, but in the final they looked miles in front, and India were forced to finish what had been as yet a wonderful tour on a dismal note.

Ricky Ponting did not miss a trick nor put a foot wrong right from the time Ganguly called incorrectly. Batting first allowed his team to put up a psychological obstacle for the Indian team which has looked very jaded in the last 10-12 days. I suspect even 280 would have been good enough for the weary India side, and 359 was simply too many.

I thought India made a mistake in not playing Rohad Gavaskar instead of Kartik, who has been badly demoralized. Gavaskar’s inclusion would have strengthened the batting and fielding without weakening the bowling any. Moreover, there did not seem to be any real ploy in place for the part-time bowlers to fill up the 10-overs quota.

This was such awesome batting from the Australians that the Indian players looked dead beat even as they walked off the field. When they came out to bat, the swagger and thrust, the defiance was all-too-brief. Sehwag began with a six off the first ball, and Tendulkar matched his agro with a smashing drive. But the counter-attack was deconstructed soon thereafter as the Australians raised the bar, cut the Indians down to size.

Lee then deceived Laxman with a Yorker, and Martyn - another to salvage his reputation in the one-day series - ran Dravid out with a brilliant pick-up and throw racing in from cover with only one stump to aim at. After that, it was all rapidly downhill.(TCM)
