Aussies claim Test series against Pakistan

MELBOURNE, Dec 29: Australia wrapped up another 4-day Test tour de force over Pakistan today, cruising to a nine-wicket victory in the second Test to clinch the best-of-three match series at the Melbourne cricket ground.

The Australians, set 126 runs to win after dismissing Pakistan for 163 in their second innings, scampered to 127 for one off 27.5 overs before tea.

Skipper Ricky Ponting hit a six off Danish Kaneira for the winning runs to remain 62 not out, while Matthew Hayden scored a welcome 56 not out to end a barren run of scores in an unbroken stand of 112.

Australia crushed Pakistan by 491 runs in the first Perth Test before lunch on the fourth day at the WACA ground.

The home side lost only one wicket — that of Test cricket’s leading runscorer this year, Justin Langer, for five in the over before lunch.

Langer was beaten by a beautiful seaming delivery from Mohammad Sami which found an edge and was caught behind by Kamran Akmal.

Damien Martyn was named man-of-the-match for his 142 in the first innings, which swung the momentum Australia’s way yesterday.

It was Australia’s 10th win in their last 13 Tests overall with their only defeat this year coming in the fourth Mumbai Test against India last month.

Pakistan last beat Australia 12 Tests ago in Sydney by 74 runs in 1995 and overall Australia lead Pakistan 10 to five since they began playing each other in 1956.

The last match of the series begins at the Sydney cricket ground on Sunday.

Australia’s consummate win once again raises concerns over one-sided Test matches finishing well short of their scheduled five days after Australia’s substantial victories in their four home Tests against New Zealand and Pakistan this southern summer.

Resuming at 85 for five, Pakistan resisted mainly through a stubborn 39-run eighth-wicket partnership in 64 minutes between stricken duo Abdul Razzaq and Shoaib Malik before the tourists were dismissed for a lead of 125 runs.

Razzaq, who spent the whole of yesterday in hospital after complaining of dizziness and shortness of breath, came out and scored a gutsy 19 off 74 balls, including a six off leg-spinner Shane Warne.

Malik, who retired hurt after 15 minutes today with complications to a split-webbing injury, returned to topscore with 41.

Despite batting at a disadvantage, Malik cracked Warne for two sixes and hit four fours in a fighting 89-ball knock.

Warne finally enticed malik to hit to Jason Gillespie at mid-on while Razzaq fell in the next over, Glenn McGrath’s first of the day, caught behind by Adam Gilchrist.

Shoaib Akhtar went down swinging, smashing Warne for two sixes in one over before he was bowled by McGrath to end the innings.

Warne, who bowled unchanged for two hours and was hit for five sixes, finished with 3-66 off 25 overs, while McGrath, surprisingly little used by skipper Ricky Ponting in the session, claimed 4-35 off 11.2 overs.

Warne finished the 2004 year with 561 Test career wickets and McGrath 477. (AFP) SCOREBOARD

Ganguly to play in Ranji, but not to lead team

KOLKATA, Dec 29: Responding to an sos from his beleaguered state side, Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has decided to turn out for Bengal in the crucial elite division group A Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh beginning here from December 31.

"Yes, I’ll be playing," Ganguly said here today, confirming what was being speculated for the last few days.

Ganguly, who returned to the city last night after a 20-day tour of Bangladesh, came to the Eden Gardens for half an hour during the day and watched some of his Bengal teammates practising.

Ganguly, however, said that he would not lead the side.

"No, no, i have no plans to lead," he said in response to queries from reporters.

After four back-to-back defeats, Bengal are in danger of being relegated from the elite division. Having so far gleaned only four points from six games, the hosts need at least two points to avoid demotion to the plate division.

Desperate Cricket Association of Bengal officials had been fervently requesting Ganguly to play in the side’s concluding group tie for the last few days.

They have also brought back from retirement veteran spinner Utpal Chatterjee for the match. (PTI)

Aussie cricketers donate prize money to disaster fund

MELBOURNE, Dec 29: Australia’s cricketers have donated their winning prize money from the boxing day test to the disaster relief funds of the South-East Asian Tsunami and earthquake victims.

More than 56,000 people were killed in the massive earthquake and tidal waves that struck Indian ocean shorelines last weekend, amid warnings the true toll could be far higher.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting announced the team’s gesture after Australia’s nine-wicket victory over Pakistan in the boxing day Test at the Melbourne cricket ground today.

Ponting said the figure was around 13,000 USD and promised there were more fund-raising initiatives in the pipeline.

"We are very supportive of a number of charity fund-raising events that the team can do to help out these victims," Ponting told a post-match press conference.

"We’ve got a number of things in the pipeline as a team that we’re looking at that haven’t been finalised yet."

"One thing that we have decided to do from today’s game is to donate all of our winning prize money from this Test match, which is about 13,000 usd which the team has decided to donate to the fund."

Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer added: "I think the two teams have signed shirts and they’re being auctioned somewhere to help them."

"It’s a tragedy that puts everything into perspective as far as cricket goes. We understand that and it’s very sad for all the people who have suffered and are still suffering." Cricket Australia official Peter Young said the International Cricket Council (ICC) was working on efforts to co-ordinate an overall cricket response to the aid relief with initiatives at Test matches scheduled around the world next week.

Young said he expected details to be in place by Friday and said ca was talking to its commercial partners for ways to help one of the welfare agencies with close ties to Sri Lanka and India, two of the countries worst affected by the disaster. (AFP)
