15th martyrdom of Pt. Prem Nath
Bhat observed Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 27: Making a strong dig at the J&K Government on the fake surrenders, former Delhi Chief Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sahib Singh Verma has demanded a CBI probe into the matter. The BJP leader who was the chief guest at a function held in connection with observance of 15th martyrdom day of Pt. Prem Nath Bhat here said God knows where from the arms and ammunition were brought in this fake surrender. The function was organised by the Pandit Prem Nath Bhat Memorial Trust and the day is also being observed as Chetna Divas. Demanding a stern action against the people in Government responsible for such fake surrenders, he said the judiciary should also take the cognizance of the same. Paying homage to Late KP leader, Mr Verma said Pt. Prem Nath Bhat was a true nationalist who worked amidst the Hindus and Muslims in the Valley for national unity and integrity. It is for this cause that he sacrificed his life, he added. The BJP leader said such people however dont die as their sacrifice continue to inspire one and all. Expressing his concern over the plight of displaced Hindus from the Valley, Mr Verma said it hurts him most to see that the community members have become refugees in their own country. He said enemy is not from outside but within. The votebank politics has been one of the main causes of these problems, he asserted. It is the duty of the politicians to come to the rescue of the people facing any problems irrespective of their caste, creed and religion, he said. "But we have failed to do that", he added. He said when BJP tried to raise such an issue, it is not only opposed by outsiders but within country voices are raised against and some charge the party of safronisation. He said Pakistan has been our enemy but we could contain her provided we strengthen ourselves to the extent that the neighbour has no alternative except to bow before us. He said local bodies elections is a challenge to the people of the state and you have to fight them unitedly. In his presidential address, Prof M R Puri Ex. Vice Chancellor Jammu University also paid rich tributes to the late leader. He said the Kashmiri Muslims can not be held responsible for the present situation in the Valley and mass exodus of the Pandits. He said these were the Kashmiri Muslims who fought out Pak invaders in 1947 under the leadership of Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah. Later again in 1965 they gave a befitting fight to infiltrators from across the border. He said these were not the people of Kashmir but the politicians who failed to lead them against the odd times in 1989. Had not the politicians left the Valley leaving people at the mercy of militants the situation would have been different, he opined. He said the people at that time had no option but to yield before the terrorist dictates and side with them. Blaming Pakistan for playing a cruel joke with Kashmiris by thrusting terrorism on them, he said the neighboring country avenged them for not siding with them in past three wars. He also blamed the Union Government for diverting its stand on Kashmir . In his address provincial president National Conference Kashmir and MLA,Dr Mehboob Beg said Kashmiriyat was a unique thing possessed by the people of the Valley. The onslaught of the militants was against it, he added. He said it needs a strong political will to solve the problem. He said it was the late Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah who demonstrated a political will and fought the onslaught with his strong conviction but the present political leadership lacks that will. Earlier in his address, Dr K L Choudhary, demanded that a probe be ordered that who engineered the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley. He criticised the recent statement of former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah that ex-Governor of J&K Jagmohan was responsible for the Pandits migration. Dr Choudhary asserted that Pandits will not return to the clusters as being proposed by the State Government at different places and demanded that they will only return to the Valley if their geo-political aspirations are fulfilled. On the occasion two KP martyrs Badri Nath Pandita of Handwara in North Kashmir and Bhushan Lal Koul of Amnoo (Kulgam) in South Kashmir were honoured posthumously. |

WASHINGTON, Dec 27: Citizens in Jammu and Kashmir enjoy more freedom than those in Pakistan-occupied-Kashimir, an organisation rating "freedom" around the world has said. In a chart titled Freedom in the world 2005, the American organisation Freedom House put Pak-occupied-Kashmir under the "not free" category and also drew a bleak picture of human rights in Pakistan. Jammu and Kashmir was rated in a higher category. "Having consolidated his hold on power through a dubious referendum that extended his term as President as well as a series of constitutional amendments that cemented the future role of the military in governance, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf held flawed elections in October 2002 and that despite the return to nominal civilian rule, the military continued to wield control over Pakistans Government," it said. "While successfully managing to curtail the activities of the political opposition, Musharraf has been less willing to rein in islamic fundamentalist groups", Freedom House said. The report claimed that Musharrafs primary aim since gaining power has been to ensure a dominant role for the military after Pakistan made the nominal transition back to democratic rule. On Pakistan the report said the constitution and other laws authorized the Government to curb freedom of speech on subjects including the constitution, the armed forces, the judiciary and religion. Blasphemy laws have also been used to suppress the media, it added. (PTI) |
