Misuse
of Govt vehicles
Sir,
Ancient
Indian wisdom teaches us that our first
responsibility is to the community,
second to our family and third to
ourself. A society starts degenerating
when this order is reversed. Social
responsibility ought to be the moral
obligation of every citizen.
Responsibility and freedom go hand to
hand. Societies are not destroyed by the
activities of dishonest persons but by
the inactivity of good people. If they
can tolerate destruction by being
inactive, how can they be good? The
question is, are they discharging their
social responsibility ? J&K state is
passing through a critical period. On the
one hand, it is engulfed with military
and on the other hand it is facing
financial crunch. Thus development works
are hampered. Unemployment is a grave
problem confronting the State Government.
J&K state can save lot of funds if
Govt vehicles, office contigencies,
phones and Jumboo Ministry is reduced to
some extent. I feel, it my moral
responsibility to inform the policy
makers of the State that Govt. vehicles
are being misused to a greater extent.
The govt vehicles should have been used
for Govt. works and that too during
office hours only, but these vehicles are
being used by so many for sending their
wards to schools, their spouses for
shopping. Not that it is with great
surprise that such vehicles are seen
parked outside temples and other worship
places during early morning hours too. An
embrassing situation is witnessed by such
actions. Using Govt. vehicles for private
purposes is not bad; but if the same are
used at the cost of Govt., then it is not
only bad but shocking and unfortunate.
Similarly lakhs of rupees are paid every
month on account of phone bills by the
State Govt. Thirdly lot of extra-ordinary
funds are being utilised on Jumboo
Ministry. If all these expenditures are
checked, Govt. can save lot of revenue,
which can directly be utilised for the
prosperity of the State. If State has
really to progress, then some hard
decisions are necessarily to be taken.
May the
Govt. look into it as the "price of
greatness is responsibility".

'City of
temples'
Sir,
Tourism is
a big and flourishing industry now. It is
a big source of earning foreign exchange
also. All the countries are using
different ways to attract tourists from
abroad. There is a lot of scope for
promoting tourism and travelling within
the country itself. This will improve the
economy of several areas where people are
poor and backward.
Jammu has
great potential to attract visitors, both
Indian and foreign. It has great
advantage of location and history. It has
numerous places of historical and
religious interest. But unfortunately the
State Government seems to be cold to make
this city a big tourist attraction. What
we need to do is to give due publicity to
our temples, handicrafts, forts and rich
culture. We have to build luxury hotels
as well as cottages to accommodate
visitors. We have to widen roads and
provide transport to places of interest.
After all
"Jammu-is-the city of temples"
The State
Government should initiate steps to
modernise and beautify the city to
attract tourists.
