Mitti Na Howe Matraei presented
Successful Punjabi adaptation of Brecht's `chalk circle' at Abhinav

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Dec 11: The Punjabi adaptation of Bretolt Brecht’s famous play ‘Chalk Circle,’ performed under the title Mitti Na Howe Matraei, here today, was a successful production by Natak Wala group from Patiala.

Organised by J&K Cultural Academy in collaboration with North Zone Cultural Center, Patiala, the play, adapted in Punjabi by Amitoj and directed by Rakesh Sharma, is based on the question as to who is the real mother. The one who gives birth or the one who brings up an abondoned child facing hardships and social opposition.

The story marked with intelligent use of motifs and symbols of Punjabi folk idioms, lore and music, almost emerges as a medieval tale of Punjab. Full of allusions to rule of Sultans, offices of munsifs, et al, the musical play successfully used folk music and poetry forms like Mirza and Sultan Bahu to support the plot wherein one court servant brings up the infant son of a Sultan whom his mother abandons after a threat to her own life in the wake of people’s revolt again the atrocities of the ruler.

In the ensuing anarchy a Patwari becomes the munsif. In the end the lady servant- who even loses her true love, only to bring up the child in a selfless emotion of mother hood- being accused of stealing the child from his natural mother is put on trial. The judge draws a circle and puts the child in it and asks the two ‘mothers’ to pull the child out of the circle and who so ever succeeds will be the true mother. The lady servant fearing that the tug of war will harm the child, lets him go. The judge then decides in her favour.

Director, Rakesh Sharma, a post graduate in theatre from Punjab University, who also acted the role of the judge, deserves congratulations for the successful presentation of the play which brought out the fragrance of Punjabi folk culture on the stage of Abhinav Theatre today.

Deputy Chief Minister, Pandit Mangat Ram Sharma, speaking on the occasion said that Punjabi and Dogri being languages of contiguous regions have many commonalties. He also honoured the outside artists.

Earlier, Ramesh Mehta, Secretary Cultural Academy, informed about the forthcoming events that include programmes of classical music, gazal recitals and number of programmes under Border Area Development Scheme
