Step up developmental activities in border areas: Gupta Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 7: Stressing the need for stepping up developmental activities in the border areas of Jammu, the former Union Minister and senior BJP leader, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has regretted that instead of taking up any new project, the execution work has come to stand still even on the schemes launched by the previous NDA Government. These schemes also included the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna and providing of special facilities to the the border villagers. After an extensive tour of Hiranagar border-belt in Hiranagar tehsil, Prof Gupta said that even the full payment of compensation for the lands which were under control of the forces during the years of armed build up, have not been paid although the Defence Ministry had since provided funds. He said that it was strange that Rs 24,000 crore package announced by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, did not include even a single scheme for sorting out the problems facing the people of these border areas. The BJP leader has taken a serious view of the reports that many of the Government offices from tehsil headquarters of Hiranagar are being gradually shifted to some places away from this historic town of Jasmergarh to the roadside along the national highway and thus giving a set-back to the people in the border areas. He alleged that this approach of the coalition of the Congress-PDP-JKNPP indicates that the ruling leadership despite change in the faces has not changed their old stance of harming the historic places of Jammu. Prof Gupta also emphasised the need for no let-up in guarding the borders and called for constant vigil to check the possibilities of infiltration and exfiltration. In the course of tour, the villagers brought to the notice of Prof Gupta their problems especially those of drinking water, poor supply of electricity, awful condition of link roads, ever increasing unemployment among the educated youth. Bhanu Prakash, Om Parkash, Durga Dass, Rashpal Singh and few others accompanied the former Minister during the tour of the border villages. |
