51 world famous diamonds replicas exhibited at Tanishq

LUCKNOW, Dec 4: For those who want to know what famous diamonds such as the Kohinoor — which now adorns the crown of the British monarch — and the ‘Nizam’ — the pride of the Hyderabad rulers —looked like, a visit to the ‘Tanishq’ exhibition here will satisfy their curiousity.

The jewellery brand has organised a three-day exhibition of showcase replicas of 51 world famous diamonds, made by Tanishq in association with the diamond trading corporation, so that people can have a glimpse of what the world’s most famous diamonds look like.

The replicas, made of ‘Cz’ stone have the same cut, shape, size, colour and caratage as the original diamond, are however not for sale.

"They are priceless," said Tanishq regional business executive, Lucknow Vipul Sachdeva while unveiling the glittering diamond replicas before the mediapersons yesterday.

He said the idea was to show the people the most spectacular and popular diamonds in the world. "Though most of them were mined from India, but now since they are no longer in the country’s possession, Tanishq decided to make their exact replicas and put up a unique exhibition of these historical treasures," he added.

On display was the Kohinoor replica, exactly in same dimensions, measuring 105.7 carat. "The original Kohinoor from India was 186 carat but when it was taken away for the queen, it was cut in amsterdam to make it into a 105.7 carat piece which is fitted in the queen’s crown," Mr Sachdeva said,

The replica of one of the biggest diamonds in the world, the ‘Nizam’, which once belonged to the Nizam of Hyderabad was also kept in the exhibition. It measured a whopping 277 carat and was extracted originally from the Golconda mines, he said.

Mr Sachdeva also showed the replica of the dazzling blue diamond ‘hope’ (45.52 carat). He said, "the original diamond was fitted in the eye of the idol of Goddess Sita but was stolen by a French visitor and since then it is in France."

Besides, the replicas of ‘Moon of Baroda’ (24 carat yellow diamond), ‘English Dresden’ (76.5 carat white diamond), ‘Blue Maharaja’ (36 carat blue diamond and once possessed by the Maharaja of Patiala), black Amsterdam, green Crysanthemum and many other replicas were on display.

The replica of a diamond gifted by Richard Burton to his wife Elizabeth Taylor was also in the exhibition.

"Apart from having the historical significance, these diamonds are also aesthetically important as some of them are believed to bring prosperity while some others have taken people to utter poverty. For example, the ‘English dresden’ also known as the ‘star of the south’ is considered as one of the unfortunate diamonds and some of the people who possessed it suffered severe losses in life."

Also, the sparkling jewels were once valued for qualities other than beauty and often treasured for magical virtues that were believed to derive from their crystal form and optical properties, he added.

The exhbition which is being held here after a display already held at Delhi, Kanpur and Varanasi, will move on to Chandigarh and Ludhiana in Punjab from here and would then go to many other places in the country at the Tanishq showrooms, Mr Sachdeva said. (UNI)

Ceiling on supply of text books to retailers to go

TIURCHIRAPPALLI, Dec 4: State-owned Tamil Nadu text book corporation, which prints text books for schools, has decided to decentralise its distribution network and appoint more dealers, besides supplying books directly to schools, according to its managing director Swaran Singh.

The ceiling on supply of number of copies of books to retailers would be lifted and the distribution and supply monitored, he told reporters here last evening.

Stating that the total printing of books had crossed the eight crore mark, he said recently 1.54 lakh copies of latest edition of Tamil medium science books had been printed for free distribution to school students.

The text books of 10th standard in Matriculation stream and various classes of Anglo-Indian stream had also been printed in adequate quantity.

The corporation had printed 12 lakh extra copies of books for higher secondary courses to ensure there was no scarcity, he said. (PTI)

Govt to regain investor confidence to boost economy: PM

NEW DELHI, Dec 4: Terming the decline in investment, particularly from private sector as a "distressing feature" of the economy, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today committed to recreate policy and political environment to boost investor confidence for increased private investment.

"I commit our Government to re-energising the economy’s growth engine, to recreate the policy and political environment required to boost investor confidence and enable an increase in private investment in the economy," Singh said at the second meeting of the council on trade and industry.

Underlining the initiatives taken by the Government in this direction to overcome the bad phase, he said "no one now talks of south Asia as a nuclear flashpoint and no travel advisories are being issues apprehending war.

"There has been improvement in the security environment in Jammu and Kashmir and in the north eastern states... I sincerely hope all political parties will conduct themselves with responsibility and a sense of national purpose so that this positive state of expectations is further enhanced," he said.

However, he noted with concern the impact of movement in world oil prices on the economy and emphasised a balanced approach suggesting "we can de-politicise energy pricing even as we make sure that the poor are not hurt by market forces".

Spelling out the priority of the Government, Singh said there were pending issues in the larger policy agenda with immediate challenge being stepping up investment and fostering capital formation in agriculture and rural economy.

Pointing at the need for completing the reform agenda with respect to the regulatory framework in infrastructure and financial sectors, he said Government was taking necessary steps in this direction to make the economy more competitive.

Calling for giving a new push to the economy, Singh stressed on reducing transaction costs, creating employment and integrating national economy with global economy while ensuring interests of weaker sections of the society.

Seeking public-private partnership for bringing massive investments into infrastructure, he said "both Government and business must enter into a social contract to ensure that these objectives are met".

Assuring the trade and industry leaders that Government will facilitate creation of multinational corporation, he asked the council to come forward with specific suggestions to end the "tyranny of inspector raj". (PTI)

Film on Saratchandra’s novel to be dubbed in Hindi

PANAJI, Dec 4: "ITI Srikanta", a film based on an adaptation of celebrated writer Saratchandra Chatopadhayay’s work by the same name, will be dubbed in Hindi for release in multiplexes in Delhi and Mumbai.

Soha Ali Khan’s celluloid debut in Bengal, which was first premiered at the last Asian Film Festival in Mumbai, received mixed response during the theatrical release in West Bengal. But, producer Tapan Biswas and Director Anjan Das have not lost heart.

"Filmmaking is a passion and we are not into this business for commercial reasons. Our film was critically acclaimed, but was not a commercial success," Mr Biswas told reporters here.

The film was screened last evening at the inox multiplex as part of the Indian panorama in the ongoing 35th IFFI.

Anjan Das said the film will be released again in West Bengal after the IFFI concludes. He said the novel Srikanta always fascinated him and he had tried his best to concise a novel of that scale on celluloid for a two-hour duration.

"I got a chance to document Bengal as it was in 1917," he said.

Referring to criticism from certain quarters about some intimate scenes in the film, anjan said there was no exposure and the scenes were aesthetically correct. He said the focus of the film was on Srikanto and his point of view of life, besides the two women in his life.

He said Srikanta has a universal appeal and explains the myriad elements of human life such as existence, death, love, hate, jealously, God and religion through subtle and delicate layers of exploration and understanding.

"I would define the film as a journey of a man into the world which runs parallel to a journey within himself, through his travels and relationships that change from time to time and place to place. Interwoven into the story are larger questions on religion, hypocracy of institutionalised spirituality, man-woman relationships and secularism where Gauhar, a Muslim is writing his own version of the Ramayana. Winter session of Maharashtra legislature begins on Dec 6 in Nagpur

NAGPUR, Dec 4: The winter session of the Maharashtra legislature is commencing here on December 6 amid skirmishes between ruling partners — the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party.

It will be the first full session of the newly-formed Vilasrao Deshmukh Government. A special three-day session of the Assembly was held in Mumbai a few weeks ago to administer the oath of office to the newly-elected MLAs, elect the Speaker and hold a vote of confidence.

In the 288-member Legislative Assembly, NCP has 71 members while Congress has 68. The Shiv Sena has a strength of 62, BJP 54, Jan Surajya Shakti four, PWP two, BRP-Bahujan Mahasangh one, RPI (a) one, Swatantra Bharat Paksha one and Akhil Bhartiya Sena one. There are 19 independent candidates.

The congress won 69 seats in the Assembly elections but its strength was reduced to 68 following the death of Govindrao Wanjari, who was elected from Nagpur east constituency.

Though the opposition has not yet announced its agenda for the session, issues such as farmers’ suicides, load-shedding, scarcity of drinking water, malnutrition deaths in tribal areas, procurement of cotton, pending irrigation projects in Vidarbha and law and order are expected to dominate both Houses of the legislature.

Elaborate security arrangements are being made for the session. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police T B Deotale, 14 Superintendents of Police, 38 DYSPs, 93 Police Inspectors, 3000 assistant sub-Inspectors, police head constables and police constables, 900 home guards and nine companies of State Reserve Police Force from different parts of the state have been deployed in the city.

Besides, five deputy Commissioners of Police, 11 assistant Commissioners of Police, 70 Police Inspectors, 300 sub-Inspectors and 4000 constables have also been posted to keep a strict vigil around the Vidhan Bhavan, Mr Doetale said.

More than 70 morchas by various social, cultural and political organisations are expected to be taken to the council hall to press for their demands, he said, adding permission has been granted for 20 demonstrations, including those by tribal outfits and teachers’ organisations. (UNI)

Thousands throng Porbandar Port to see submarine, warships

PORBANDAR, Dec 4: People thronged the Port of Porbandar on the west coast of Gujarat to catch a glimpse of the Russian-built submarine and three Indian naval warships.

The kilo-class submarine ‘Sindhuratna’ and warships ‘Vindhyagiri’, ‘Veer’ and ‘Abhay’ were thrown open to general public as part of Navy Day Celebrations today.

According to Navy sources, about 6,000 people visited the port yesterday and many more are expected to visit today.

"The Navy had arranged the public viewing of the vessels here from Dec 2-4", said Commodore S S Kailey, vaval officer-in-charge (Gujarat).

"INS Vindhyagiri is largely used for anti-submarine warfare and has recently been fitted with advanced ship control station for unmanned aerial vehicle.

"The navy has also organised an eye-camp on this occasion", Commodore Kailey said. "A reunion of retired service personnel has also been planned," he added. (UNI)

Bedlam continues in Orissa Assembly for second day

BHUBANESWAR, Dec 4: Complete bedlam prevailed in the Orissa Assembly for the second day today as a determined opposition stalled proceedings of the House from the question hour itself, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Despite clarifications from Mr Patnaik, the opposition demanded he step down in view of the indictment of the State Government by the High Court on the issue of exploitation at Tangarapada mines by Jindal strips.

The Chief Minister, however, clarified today that not the least sales tax relief had awarded to any company.

In a statement made in the House, he said, "I have been listening to many of the remarks made by leader of the opposition and some other persons for the last two days about Rs 20,000 sales tax relief given to a company. Let me make it clear that even 20 paise sales tax releif has not been given to any company."

The High Court had not said that sales tax relief had been awarded to the company, he reiterated.

The Chief Minister said leader of opposition J B Patnaik continued to make false allegations to deceive the public. "I do not understand why the opposition is not prepared for a proper discussion but resorting to such drama."

No one, however important he may be, would be allowed to stand in the way of industrialisation and progress of the state, he said.

But the opposition refused to accept the Chief Minister’s clarification and beat cymbals and bells inside the well of the house. Total pandemonium prevailed and no one could be heard.

However, the Speaker ordered to continue the proceedings of the House.

As noisy scenes prevailed, the Speaker adjourned the House for one hour at 1130 hrs.

Earlier, after the House assembled for the day, leader of opposition J B Patnaik said since the High Court had indicted the Government, Mr Naveen Patnaik, as the head of that Government, should resign owing moral responsibility.

He said the executive and judiciary should respect each other. However, an abnormal situation had arisen since the Chief Minister described the verdict of the court as being without foundation. The constitutional crisis, he said, would end only with the resignation of the Chief Minister.

He said Chief Ministers and Union Ministers have resigned following strictures of the court in the past.

The House would only function after the Chief Minister resigned, he added.

Trouble started after BJD member R P Swain said since his question was listed on top it should be taken up first.

Mr J B Patnaik had looted the state and had no moral right to speak, Mr Swain alleged.

The opposition members continued shouting slogans against the Chief Minister and then entered the well of the House and beat cymbals to stall the proceedings of the Assembly.

After the House reassembled at 1230 hours OGP member Arun Dey said, "we followed the norms and principles of Parliament. In the Lok Sabha the opposition did not allow the Parliament to function for days together demanding the resignation of the tainted ministers."

Here the House would not be allowed to function till the Chief Minister resigned, Mr Dey added.

Amidst confusion a few ruling party members also resorted to protests demanding restoration of order in the House.

As pandemonium prevailed the Speaker adjourned the House at 1300 hrs for one-and-a-half hours. (UNI)

Chandrasekhar Rao discharged from cheating case

HYDERABAD, Dec 4: A city court has discharged Union Labour Minister and Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K Chandrasekhar Rao from a cheating case and dismissed a petition filed by a former TRS activist accusing him of corrupt practices and breach of trust.

Fifth Metropolitan Magistrate Venkateshwar Reddy dismissed the petition yesterday filed by advocate and former TRS worker Prahlad who alleged that Rao had collected Rs 10,000 from each aspirant for party ticket in the may Assembly elections but failed to refund the money.

The peitioner had alleged that Rao had collected a total of Rs 77 lakh from ticket hopefuls promising that TRS would contest all the 107 Assembly seats in Telangana region.

Subsequently, the party forged an electoral alliance with congress and did not field candidates in several constituencies and failed to refund the amount, the peititoner alleged.

The complainant sought legal action against Rao under sections 420, 408 and 417 of IPC on the ground that the TRS supremo had deliberately suppressed the fact that his party was to enter into a poll tie-up with Congress.

During the trial, the counsel for TRS chief argued that no direct payment was made to Rao and the money was refunded to all those aspirants who applied for refund.

After hearing the arguments from both sides, the Magistrate held that there was no prima facie evidence against Rao and dismissed the petition. (PTI)
