Concede employees demands

Sir,

The stand taken by the Govt., over the long pending demands of low paid employees is nothing but short off rubbing salt on their wounds. To launch strikes, dharnas, hunger strikes is no vocation with him but a compulsion that forces him to adopt the strategy to awaken the Govt. from their deep slumber for justice. Spiraling prices on day to day consumable commodities, steep rise on POL, colossal price variation, inexplicable price rise in medicines, when clubbed together leaves no choice but to knock the doors for succor. It looks absurd and ungenerous to discriminate them from the employees of center and other states who have since long been provided with the due demand. The disparity and discrimination is unjustified.

The Government employee is the pillar of the state and to keep him ill- fed is travesty of justice.

Desperate situation call for desperate action. It is high time that the Government understands the plight of employees, pensioners to free them from economic insecurity. It is an obligation for the leaders and bureaucrats to concede their genuine demands as early possible.

The action spelt out by the Finance Minister to constitute a three member committee to identify the grievance is a belated action when this exercise should have been taken long back to address their grievances. Any way better late than never. The employees/pensioners demand includes.

* Release of 2% and 3% D.A. from January and July 2004.

* Merger 50% D.A with basic pay.

* Medical allowance Rs.500/- instead Rs.100/-.

* Mediclaim insurance policy.

Curb militancy

Sir,

Last year Ministry of Defence, Government of India offered unilateral ceasefire on LoC in a bid to normalise relations with Pakistan. The move was responded by Pakistan and the exchange of fire stopped as per the official assertion. But as a fact it would be and to the utter dismay, Pakistani Army still continues to resort to occasional fire as has been experienced by the residents of the bordering villages with LoC.

In the recent move, as a goodwill gesture, Government of India announced the reduction in troops deployment and the same was implemented in letter and spirit. But the said step was not responded in whole -heartedly by Pakistan.

If the situation is monitored very minutely and honest viewpoint applied, one is bound to conclude that Pakistan is always insincere in its efforts and is bent upon vilifying India before the world community.

Since the situation in J&K continues to be grim with enormous annihilation to men and material, I would like to draw the attention of the authorities at the helm of affairs, to firmly curb the militancy being perpetrated by hostile Pakistan and sternly punish the anti-national elements.

Had the proverb "Nip the evil in the bud" been applied at the very onset of militancy, the situation would have been totally otherwise.

Fraudulent companies

Sir,

This has reference to the news item 'Advocate among 4 arrested for cheating'' published in the Daily Excelsior on Dec. 2, 2004.

It is quite strange that people do not learn from past mistakes. This is not for the first time that people have been cheated of their money and goods. Earlier also a number of take investment companies opened their business counters here. People invested in them with the hope that they would get huge benefits in return. But nothing like that happened. The companies made a fast buck, locked their offices and one fine morning they were not to be seen anywhere. The subscribers got dejected and depressed. They lodged FIRs here and there. But they had to satisfy with sarrors only.

Despite getting huge scandals, these incidents keep on recurring here and there. And it is quite pathetic that people don't learn from them.

It is time that people investigate first, check the veracity of these companies and then only invest in them.
