A sad commentary

Sir,

Anara Gupta episode is a sad commentary on the fair name of city of temples. It should also serve as an eye opener for those young girls who look to the world of fashion and glamour as a passport to success and happiness. It also reflects that being over ambitious is beset with dangerous end results. In the instant case, lust and greed of some sleazy traders have played havoc with the life of this young girl and made her a physical wreck. Yet, she is squarely to be blamed for landing in trap of those unhealthy minds who are aimed at exploiting the teenagers for sex and money. Surprisingly, she hardly resisted their overtures and went ahead from bad to worse. One wonders what was Anara's mother doing all this period and why she did not check her daughter's movements. Mother is a friend and a guide for the daughter and on all counts she miscrably failed to perform her motherly duties.

As on now, Anara warrants sympathy and compassion. It is obligatory on the part of Women Cell and other social organisations and people at large, to empathise with the exploited girl so as to rehabilitate her to a normal mental and physical health. The people must not consider the family an outcast as that would be too cruel under the present set of circumstances. Other family members, her brothers and other must not suffer for no fault of theirs. This sordid racket need be probed in depth to locate the extent to which its tentacles have spread. None the less, the torture of the girl in Police custody is uncalled for and does not meet the ends of justice.

The J&K High Court has shown dissatisfaction over the way investigations have thus far been conducted. It transpires that the 'high and the mighty' have neither been touched nor interrogated. To prevent recurrence of such gory incidents in Jammu, it is imperative that the investigations are conducted in a free, fair and impartial manner and all those connected with this sleazy racket hauled up and brought to book. The media too need to act in a restrained manner as also admonished by the Hon'ble court.

The villain of this squalid episode, Narinder Kohli and his ilk require stringent punishment and condemnation by society at large. As on now, this sordid saga has been hitting the head lines in the national print media and Anara jokes are flooding the mobile phones, the 'porno CDs' reportedly are being openly sold in Palika bazar and else where in Delhi. It is imperative that the authorities act fast to confiscate there 'CDs', apprehend the culprits and bring this issue to a logical end. Needless to say that Jammu is finding repeated mention in the national media in the context of this sleazy racket.

Shimmering package

Sir,

One million dollar questions for intellectuals, academician, jurists of the country is whether the shimmering package 24000 crores announced and allocated by the PM for the state during his recent visit to the valley will really dose the anguish, sense of alienation in this strife-torn state of J&K to restore its pristine glory. I owe an answer for it.

We want political solution to bail out the state from terrorism, insecurity and uncertainty, what is now on the ground has a background of the past legacy. The simmering resentment for the past fifty years is sprouting its seeds consuming unimaginable toll of human lives, gaining momentum, gathering explosive to ignite fires in the volatile pocket of the Kashmir. Even our PM was greeted and welcomed with the exploding of grenades notwithstanding the fact the visit was most ostensibly hyped a Peace visit.

The package can be likened to a ramshackle house to be decorated in desolation. The economic package delivered is to mitigate the hunger and not the anger gaining currency unabatedly.

It is a sad fact that our leaders have not learnt any thing from the past fifty years or they willfully play ostrich to befuddle the masses killing their conscience.

History stands witness to the fact that Kashmir has undergone a series and battery of tests, both on land and lips, and each test has given a foul, pungent smell difficult to breathe.

We have tried all the packages, methods supplementing the state liberally with sumptuous flow of money to stabilize the economy, to contain the anti sloganeering elements and at each stage we have to eat the humble pie. The feelers thrown in kind and cash to earn the confidence has fetched no desired dividends. The attempts made have proved nothing short of carving lines on the water.

The worst that has happened to the state in the last ten years of turmoil was the disintegration of aborigines, dismantling an edifice of rich culture and heritage, weaning away the celestial ray that mesmerized our Bapu Ji.

We need to try, understand and explain in lucid and intellectual terms the cause and nature of this conflict. A political solution can alone nail the ailment, the only answer for all the ailments of J&K State.

The immediate need is to evolve peace option to be carried forward to its logical end.

*Accept LOC as the defact border between India and Pakistan

*Accept Kashmir a issue, a political problem that merits political solution.

* Involve all the relevant parties of Kashmir in the dialogue.

* Involve intellectuals from the state as interlocutors.

* Accept the demand of Hurryat to move to Pakistan in pursuit of peace.

* Constitute a team of intellectuals from the state possessing sterling qualities to interact with the leaders of PAK, in a viable method to learn and search for permanent peace in the state.

Every Right implies a responsibility and every effort a moral duty.

Yours etc...
