Tendulkar, Bahutule help Mumbai post decent total CHENNAI, Sept 18: Sachin Tendulkars resolute batting helped Ranji Trophy Champions Mumbai reach a decent 272 for nine against Rest of India on the opening day of the Irani Cup cricket match at the M A Chidambaram Stadium here today. Tendulkar scored a resilient 94 while Wasim Jaffer (43) and Sairaj Bahutule (58) added valuable runs as Mumbai recovered from a disastrous start. Zaheer Khan was the wrecker-in-chief for the Rest with figures of five for 74, while Anil Kumble chipped in with two for 46. At close, Robin Morris (9) and Avishkar Salve (0) were at the crease. Tendulkar was a cut above the Rest. Though rival captain Sourav Ganguly tried everything, it was of no avail as the Mumbai captain showed tremendous concentration power in his first match for Mumbai since the Ranji Trophy final in 2001. Tendulkar added 149 runs for the sixth wicket with Bahutule in 56.1 overs in 230 minutes. He fell eventually to Zaheer Khan, caught behind by Dravid as he slashed at a rising delivery. The maestro was particularly severe on the spinners, Harbhajan Singh suffering the most. Aware of the batting limitations after Bahutule, Tendulkar went after the Rest bowling as he tried to make the most of his stay at the crease. Bahutule, having played the perfect foil, fell tamely with a simple catch to Ganguly at close-in off Kumble. Earlier, asked to bat first, Mumbai openers Vinayak Mane and Wasim Jaffer got off to a good start, but Zaheer Khan wrecked the Mumbai innings with his dramatic second spell, when he bagged three wickets in five overs for 12 runs, changed the course of the match. From 91 for two, Mumbai slid to 95 for eight. Mane (26), during his brief stay, was solid in handling both Zaheer Khan and L Balaji, as he picked two boundaries off each. Ganguly then turned to Sanjay Bangar and brought on himself at the other end. This paid dividends as mane tried to cut Bangar and was caught by Kumble. Nishit Shetty started shakily and survived a leg before appeal to Bangar. He had a reprieve when Ganguly floored a return catch in the 18th over. He did not last long and was caught at covers by Sehwag for five off Zaheer. Tendulkar then led the recovery with Jaffer but their partnership was broken when Jaffer was bowled after he failed to read the bounce and swing of Balaji. His useful stand with Tendulkar yielded 32 runs in 31 balls. Vinod Kamblis hopes of reviving his international career were dashed when he fell leg before to Zaheer. Ajit Agarkar then snicked the Baroda paceman to wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel to be out for duck. Bahutule then played a responsible innings as he lent firm support to Tendulkar. Rahul Dravid substituted for Parthiv Patel, who was off the field for 3.5 overs due to dehydration. (PTI) |
Permission to junior team partial relaxation: Verma NEW DELHI, Sept 18: Terming the decision to allow the junior teams to play Pakistan in multilateral tournaments as a "partial relaxation", Government today said revival of full cricketing ties would depend on the assessment to be made after the completion of junior tournaments. "As of now no decision has been taken on resumption of bilateral cricket series between India and Pakistan. The partial relaxation of allowing the junior team to play against Pakistan has come taking into consideration the developments in the last couple of months," Sports Minister Vikram Verma told reporters here. "We will assess the outcome of the junior tournaments first. It will help us judge the situation." Though both the countries are playing in multilateral tournaments, they have not met each other in a bilateral series since 1999 when Pakistan toured India for a two-match Test series and another match under Asian Test Championship. The Governments decision to allow the under-19, India-A and the academy teams to play against Pakistan has rekindled the hopes for resumption of the game at the senior level. Verma said his Ministry today forwarded a letter to the cricket board allowing it to send the Indian team to Sri Lanka and Pakistan for participation in the two tournaments under the emerging trophy. "We had received proposals from the BCCI regarding the three junior tournament. We gave the board the clearance for the tournaments in Sri Lanka and Pakistan," Verma said. "Regarding the tournament in India, the Home Ministry is yet to clear it on security grounds." While the Colombo meet will be a three-nation affair featuring the academy teams from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the second tournament of under-19 sides in Pakistan will have Bangladesh as the fourth team. The Colombo meet will see India and Pakistan meet for the first time in a junior level tournament since playing in the ICC junior World Cup in New Zealand in February last year. (PTI) |
India can surprise Dutch: Mukherjea NEW DELHI, Sept 18: India could spring a surprise on the fancied Dutch team in the Davis Cup world group qualifying tie starting tomorrow, former Davis Cup player and captain Jaidip Mukherjea said here today. "We have a very young team and obviously it is going to be tough. But then Davis Cup history is littered with surprises, and India too can spring a surprise," Mukherjea said at a function organised by the All India Tennis Association to felicitate him for bagging the international tennis federations "award for services to the game". "This (ITF) award means more to me as it comes from the sports world governing body. I have given my life for tennis and I will cherish this award to the last," said Mukherjea, an Arjuna Awardee in 1966. "The award also means recognition from the Indian fraternity, and I am thankful to all my friends, my captain Rajiv Khanna, Ramanathan Krishnan, Premjit Lal and S P Mishra," he said. A rugby player in his early days, Mukherjea turned to tennis due to a collar-bone injury, and it proved to be a blessing for Indian sports. The Kolkatan made his India debut in 1960 against Thailand, a back-door entry of sorts after the established Krishnan was down with chicken-pox. He announced his arrival with a victory in his first game on the Davis Cup stage and then went on to perform with aplomb for the next 13 years. Mukherjea formed with Ramanathan Krishnan and Premjit Lal the famous three musketeers of India. The year 1966 in particular was a watershed for him. "I beat Krishnan in the Asian Championships final in Kolkata. He was the number one player in India at that time. Then came the victory over Wilhelm Bungert in New Delhi (in the challenge round against Germany)," said Mukherjea as he recalled his most memorable moments of his sparkling career. The crowning glory came later the same year when he partnered Krishnan to an upset victory over Australias John Newcombe and Tony Roche. Australia beat India 4-1 at the Kooyong Stadium in Melbourne, but the doubles victory became part of the India tennis folklore. "Roche was my good friend and after the match he came and said, `so your one win was to come against me. "Newcombe and Roche had remained unbeaten that year till then, and that made our win even more remarkable," said Mukherjea who was four times Asian champion and reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon as many times. He later on captained the Davis Cup team between 1994 and 1999 and was coach of the Indian squad to Atlanta Olympics in 1996, where Leander Paes won a bronze. It was also under his captaincy India won its last tie 3-2 against Holland, whom they take on the crucial play-off at Zwolle, Netherlands. "I would play (Prakash) Amritraj in the doubles (with Mahesh Bhupathi) because he has the aggression and quick reflexes which are very important for doubles," he said. Amritraj set for Davis Cup debut NEW DELHI: Prakash Amritrajs dream of playing for India will be fulfilled tomorrow when he takes on Sjeng Schalken in the Davis Cup world group qualifying tie against Holland in Zwolle. Rohan Bopanna, who made his Davis Cup debut early this year against Japan, will take on Martin Verkerk in the opening singles rubber followed by Amritrajs match against Schalken. Bopanna will also partner Mahesh Bhupathi in the doubles rubber on Saturday, followed by the reverse singles on Sunday, as India try to break the play-off jinx. Ramesh Krishnan, the non-playing captain, said recent form and age factor were the reasons behind his opting for Amritraj ahead of the experienced Harsh Mankad. "He (Amritraj) has been doing well during the past three or four months and has scored a few good wins," Krishnan told PTI from Zwolle after the draw ceremony. (AGENCIES) |
Court directs Govt to file reply within 2 weeks CHANDIGARH, Sept 18: The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the Punjab Government to file its reply within two weeks on a petition challenging action of the State Government to make out of turn promotions, including those of sportspersons, in the police force. The directions were issued by Division Bench of the court comprising Justice J S Kehar and Justice Hemant Gupta. The counsel for the State Government had sought four-week time to enable them to file a statement on promotions made out of turn in the police force. However, the bench allowed two weeks time and fixed October 21 as the next date for arguments. The High Court, in July this year, had given directions that out of turn promotions beyond permissible limits under Punjab Police rules should be reverted after a petition was filed by the police personnel in the general category. Star cricketer Harbhajan Singh and hockey hero Jugraj Singh were among 340 sportspersons facing demotion in the Punjab Police following a court order on out of turn promotions in the force. The row was sparked after the promotions under discretionary quota came under challenge. The State Government was considering to revert police personnel, including sportspersons, who were given out of turn promotions. The counsel defending the cause of the police personnel, including sportspersons, told reporters outside the court that under the rule 13.1 of Punjab Police the DGP can grant order for promotions for outstanding policemen. Jugraj not a threatening field player: Pak captain KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18: Pakistan Hockey captain Mohd Nadeem has asserted that his team will regain the Asia Cup. "We have won this Cup thrice in a row and now I think we have got the team which is capable of regaining it," Nadeem said ahead of the sixth edition of the Cup, which starts here from September 21. The winner will qualify for the 2006 World Cup to be held in Germany. The Pakistan captain agreed that India was a formidable side and said they (India) will be missing penalty corner striker Jugraj Singh. "India has many talented players in their rank. Jugraj is their penalty corner specialist but as a field player he is not threatening," he added. He admitted that it was the weak defence and a tentative forward-line, which was a problem for the Pakistan team in the Champions Trophy. "We have improved on these grey areas. The forward line is also the first defence of a team and if it clicks well that means half the battle is won," Nadeem said. He said prior to coming here the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) had sought the advice of FIHs master coach Tayyab Ikram. "He (Ikram) gave us tips and discussed the strategy for Asia Cup after watching shortcomings of the team in the Champions Trophy," he said, adding that the team coach Tahir Zaman has worked hard to prepare the team for this crucial event. The skipper was confident that his defenders will put up good show and there will be a good coordination between forwards, half-line and the defence. He said, "it is the time we start winning. A win here will end the drought (of winning the titles) but added that the competition is going to be very tough. India, South Korea and Malaysia were tough rivals and it will be foolish to take any of them lightly." He had a word of praise for his penalty corner expert Sohail Abbas, saying "Sohail is a lethal weapon for the rivals. He has improved his game while playing in the German league this year." Nadeem said defending champions South Korea are in the process of rebuilding their side, while Malaysia always performs better in front of a home crowd. Nadeem disclosed he will retire from international hockey after the Athens Olympics next year. "I have played international hockey for a good number of years and I think I will not be able to play international hockey after a year," he added. (PTI) Spain strong favourites against Argentines LONDON, Sept 18: Far from being the anticipated battle of the claycourt heavyweights, Spains Davis Cup semi-final against Argentina this weekend is turning into a damp squib before a ball is hit. The tie in the Spanish holiday resort of Malaga had promised to be an entrancing contest between four top 10 players. However, the likely withdrawals of injured Argentines Guillermo Coria and David Nalbandian have tipped the balance strongly in favour of the hosts. Argentina will be severely hampered if, as expected, Coria and the ninth ranked Nalbandian miss the tie, especially as the duo would have fancied their chances of leading the South Americans to their first title in the team competition.(AGENCIES) LAHORE, Sept 18 : The much deferred South Asian Federation (SAF) Games will now be held at Islamabad from March 29 to April 6 next year.
