Entrance
tests
Sir,
Achievers
are those who fight it out among
thousands and emerge as winners to relish
the fruit of labour. This is with
response to the letter "No Entrance
Tests" by Mr. J M Behl published in
Daily Excelsior dated 10.09.2003. I am of
the view, one cannot gauge the worth of a
student on the basis of percentage of
marks obtained in academics and cannot
challenge the worth of student who might
have obtained a low percentage of marks.
It seems
Mr. Behl is sure that a student with good
percentage of marks at qualifying
examination is enough worthly to do
justice to his/her allotted
responsibility. I have come across the
students who have good academic record,
but have no knowledge about the world
beyond their books, even though there are
so many distinct students of +2 levels
who completely failed at university Part
I examination. Sometimes academic
attainments to some comes as a matter of
chance, as they prepare some selected
topics which may cover 100 percent of
their paper hence results is excellent.
Therefore, providing seats in
professional courses and advanced
academics to students on the basis of
their percentage of marks obtained in
qualifying exams is totally wrong and
unacceptable while as on the contrary
entrance tests makes it imperative for
students to have thorough knowledge of
their academics as well as of wordly
affairs. And it is the entrance test
where we can do justice by allotting
seats to deserving candidates and this is
here at entrance tests where the real
mettle of the students get tested.
Denying a
student the opportunity to prove his
worth is no way less to a crime. I favour
holding of open entrance tests. The
minimum percentage criteria for appearing
in entrance tests should be removed. All
those who have been declared as
successful by authorities in any
examination should be allowed to appear
in competitions to prove their worth.
Regarding
the unnecessary binding, botheration and
follow up work in holding these entrance
tests which Mr. Behl feels is not good,
for that I can say, this is what the
authorities are for and the salaries they
drawing thereof.
About Pvt
colleges as mentioned by Mr. Behl the
simple procedure and straight admissions
I can say these are only those students
who fail to make it to the institutions
of excellence, besides I don't think by
pumping lacs of rupees by the parents of
these students of make their wards at par
with the students who have proved their
worth is a good practice as it totally
hampers the cause of these entrance tests
and I don't think these students can do
justice to their profession in particular
and society in general.
Now a days
student are being provided with almost
all facilities for their education and
training and we can see their pocket
money runs in thousands of rupees so I
don't think spending rupees 500/- or plus
on these exams makes any sense of
exhausting the pockets of their parents
as Mr. Behl thinks, about joining the
coaching colleges I can say it is a
question of affordability, if you can you
can have otherwise there are students who
prove their worth at their own.
Yours
etc...
