RBI and gold coins

Sir,

It refers to newspaper-reports of fake coins being sold in market as old silver coins. Gold coins of British time popularly known as 'Gunnies' are available in plenty as duplicates. Fabrication of fake gold and silver coins is crime, and exhibits public craze for gold and silver coins for various reasons like tradition, gift or savings. Reputed companies and banks are successfully selling gold and silver coin-shaped pieces in plenty.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) should issue 24- carat gold coins weighing 10 gms in denomination of Rs 10000. To minimise chances of duplication, these coins should be numbered and a guarantee-certificate bearing number of the coin and security thread should be issued with each coin mentioning weight and purity. Since these high-priced coins are not to be ordinarily circulated, these can be plastic-packed together with guarantee-certificate as attractive gift-items. Weight of coin can be reduced after value of gold in coin crosses eighty percent of face value of the coin. Another coin of Rs 5000 denomination can be issued on same lines with gold and silver in equal proportion. Likewise pure silver coins of 50 gms can be issued in denomination of Rs 1000. System will be net revenue earning for Union Government because suggested plastic-packed coins will never come in actual circulation.

For ordinary public, coins of 10 gms pure silver can be issued in denominations of Rs 200. But 10-gms silver coins need not be numbered, and may be ordinarily issued without any guarantee certificate. All these coins should be made conveniently available in plenty at all offices of RBI and selected branches of nationalised banks throughout the country. These coins can also be issued to commemorate occasions.

More information about Ramleelas

Sir,

Reference is made to the article ''Ramleelas from past to present'' published in the Daily Excelsior on Oct 19, 2003.

I have gone through this publication minutely and carefully. I am really surprised and it is very intriguing and mysterious to note that the key theatre, Music and Cultural personalities who have played a dynamic and pivotal role in the Dewan Mandir Ramleelas and in the promotion of Art, Culture, theatre etc. viz Hakeem Pandit Parshu Ram Nagar, K L Sehgal and Om Parkash find even no passing reference in it, although they deserved special and detailed mention of their contributions in these fields. The interviews have been given by the aged persons and reasons for omitting these very eminent personalities in their inter-action with the Correspondents/Reporters is best known to them although they are fully aware of these personalities and their roles in these fields.

The information given by them is not complete and impressive as they have failed to give significant, vital information about the role of these personalities which is even known to common man also. There are glaring ommissions in the material supplied to the media.

To make the write-up a bit informative, interesting and impressive I give below a bit of more information in connection with theatre, Ramleelas in Dewan Mandir for the information of media and general public and readers of news papers.

It is well known fact that Hakeem Parshu Ram Nagar an eminent multi-dimensional personality and a cultural Czar of the state remained President of Sanatan Dharam Natak Samaj in Dewan Mandir Jammu for a very long time and who did a lot of work/contributed for the promotion of theatre, Music and culture in the region. Film personalities K L Sehgal and Om Parkash obtained their Music and theatre training from him and accepted Mr Nagar their Guru and gave him immense honour and reverential awe. Hakeem Nagar was a towering and legendry figure in the State whose contributions in social, political, cultural, religious, judicial, Indian Ayurvedic fields etc. is well known to all. He was a legend in his life time and an institution in himself. He was the member of the Audition Committee and Advisory Committee of Radio Jammu and Member of General and Executive Committee of J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages.

I had seen K L Sehgal and Om Parkash before 1947 in the house of Hakeem Sahib and had met Film Star Om Parkash, Balraj Sahni, Mrs. Pupal Jayakar in Bombay in 1972 who showered great praise on Hakeem Parshu Ram Nagar's high-profile personality. It was a memorable visit for me to meet them. In my few interviews in Radio Jammu among other things I have narrated my this memorable event also.

This information is given for the information of the media, general public and those who have given interview to your correspondents/reporters.

Yours etc...
