India clinch two golds to climb to fifth position HYDERABAD, Oct 27: The strong Indian tennis players affirmed their supremacy by clinching two gold medals as the hosts enjoyed moderate success on the third day of competitions in the inaugural Afro-Asian Games here today. The tennis players expectedly made a clean sweep of the gold medals in the team events while the lifters and the shooters also chipped in with four silver medals on a day which saw the script unfold on expected lines. The hosts climbed to the fifth position on the medals table with three golds, 11 silvers and 11 bronze medals as Asian powerhouse China continued to top the table with a tally of 10-2-0. Japan were in second position with 5-2-1. The Indian mens tennis team had no difficulty in disposing of Nigeria with an emphatic 3-0 margin with Davis Cupper Rohan Bopanna, Prakash Amritraj and the doubles duo of Vishal Uppal and Vijay Kannan defeating their opponents in straight sets. The womens team then brought more cheer for the host nation by grabbing the yellow metal by prevailing over Indonesia in the final. The shooting range at the Central University also proved quite productive for the Indians with Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Deepali Deshpande pocketing silver medals while the seasoned Anwar Sultan added a bronze to the kitty. The swimmers had a rather disappointing day at the pool as they failed to make much of an impact against their formidable Asian and African counterparts, managing just two bronze medals. Manavjit Singh Sandhu missed the coveted gold in the mens trap event, losing to Asian Games champion Li Hui of China 7-6 in tie-shoot. The experienced Deepali Deshpande put up a creditable performance by winning the silver in the womens 50 m sport rifle prone event while Anwar Sultan was the other medal winner with a bronze in the mens trap event. Pistol king Jaspal Rana, however, was a big disappointment finishing a poor sixth in the mens 25 m centrefire pistol event. In the weightlifting arena, the Indians had a relatively satisfying day capturing two silver medals with Satheesha Rai and Sonia Chanu being the star performers. The 21-year-old Rai missed gold by a whisker in a body weight decision after he pulled out of the third round of the mens 77 kg men category Alabi Dare of Nigeria and Rai were tied at a tally of 322.5 when Rai had to pull out as his knee injury aggravated and the African, whose body weighed 75.25 kg against 76 kg of the host, claimed gold while Ali Eshtiwi Mohamed of Libya claimed bronze with a total lift of 302 kg. The Nigerian aggregated the total with 137.5 in snatch and 185 kg in clean and jerk while Rais tally was a result of 145 in snatch and 177.5 in clean and jerk. The unheralded Sonia Chanu clinched the silver in the womens 53 kg category with a total lift of 177.5. The swimmers, who had collected 9 medals till yesterday, failed to make much of an impression today, managing just two bronze medals. The mens 4x100 relay medley team comprising Senthil Kumar, Gairik Bardhan, Rajeev K and Benoy Sebastian had to be content with the bronze on a day which saw the Chinese and Japanese swimmers maintaining their dominance. The womens 4x100 freestyle relay team comprising Shikha Tandon, Lisa Mahanta, Remya V and Ambika Iyengar bagged the bronze with a timing of 4 minutes:00.07 sec. The Indian pugilists assured themselves of at least two more bronze medals with Diwakar Prasad and Harpal Singh romping into the semi-final stage in their respective weight categories. Prasad outpunched Kenyas David Kasina in the Bantam weight category while Harpal Singh defeated Gregorio Capita of Angola in the super heavy weight category. |
Fireworks to continue next month By Daniel Vittori Most of you would have been expecting another scintillating article from Nathan Astle, but due to his injury I have been fortunate enough to take over. I may be able to give a more in depth analysis of the Kiwis time in India as unlike Nathan, I do actually leave my hotel room. We have moved on from the test series now and after the washout in Chennai, which was provocatively placed, we were happy take a few days break. We travelled to the magnificent Taj Fisermans Cove resort just a few minutes drive from Chennai. This gave the players involved in the arduous Test series a chance for some rest and relaxation. The guys used the massage faclilities at the resort extensively to unwind from the rigors of international cricket, especially the Captain. A lot of the guys just relaxed by the pool or swam in the warm crystal clear ocean. However, some of the guys took the opportunity to polish their card playing skills. Ian Butler, our ginger headed quick bowler who likes life in the fast lane took this to the extreme and was unfortunately caught cheating in one of the fiercely competitive schools. While there is no firm evidence, the rest of the team believes that Scott Styris may somehow have been involved in the cheating. With the current Diwali festivities taking place, Daryl Tuffey and Lou Vincent discovered a shop in the local village that sold fire crackers. Because fire crackers are now illegal in New Zealand they made the most of the opportunity and let off hundreds of crackers on the beach to the local resort staffs delight. The crackers here in India are much louder than what we ever had in New Zealand and in some cases they even resemble small bombs. One of the new arrivals Paul Hitchcock loves his fishing and had the chance to go out on a boat with some local fisherman to do some deep-sea fishing. He didnt catch much but he came back with some great tales of the one that got away. We left Fishermans Cove with 3 points in the bank from the washed out match in Chennai and now move on to Faridabad where we will look to continue our good form on the sub-continent as we take on the current World Champions. We are approaching the Faridabad match with some trepidation as the venue is about an hours drive from Delhi where we are staying. With a 9am match start it may be difficult with an early morning wake-up call especially for the glamour boys in the team like Scotty Styris who require some time in front of the mirror to get ready. The competition is beautifully set-up with Indias win over Australia and even though the Diwali festivities are coming to an end, I am sure the fireworks will continue well into November with the razzle dazzle of the TVS Cup. Win to boost India's prospects By: Ravi Shastri Indias fine win over Australia under lights at Gwalior gives their prospects in this tournament a great boost. After sharing points with New Zealand in the first game, the home team was under pressure, but they got their act right to subdue the best side in the world. Australia obviously missed the class and experience of McGrath, Gillespie and Lee from the team that won the World Cup earlier this year. But Indias performance was brilliant nevertheless, led by strong hundreds from Tendulkar and Laxman, a scintillating cameo from Yuvraj and stout-hearted bowling by Zaheer and Kumble in defending 283. But the player of the day for me was Rahul Dravid who marshalled his resources magnificently, and took crucial decisions that influenced the game decisively. He promoted Yuvraj unselfishly ahead of himself, and when India were bowling, brought on the spinners within the first 10 overs. He had read the conditions and situation correctly, put the fielders in the right place, and struck a fine balance between attack and defence. It was good to see Dravid take on this mantle in the absence of the regular captain and handle the job without fuss and ado. He brought his vast experience into play and his rapport with the players showed his stature in the dressing room. Dravid had to be thankful to Tendulkar and Laxman to provide him a good score to defend. As I have said repeatedly, it was only a matter of time before Tendulkar got into the big scores again. He looked very good in the first match against New Zealand, and against Australia, he came out more determined. He is at his best when the stakes are high, and they dont get higher than when playing against the World champions. Laxman rode his current good form to perfection, and these two put up a platform which allowed the batsmen to follow to chance their arm. Yuvraj played a blinder and Agarkar would have surprised many with his batting, but I have always believed that he has the potential to become the all-rounder that India seeks. Gilchrist and Hyaden looked like running away with the match with their quick-fire century partnership, but Indias bowlers struck back at the right time. Zaheer was impressive in his second spell for attitude and skill, while Kumble became a daunting proposition as the wicket got slower and the bounce lower. I believe that Kumble is a strong bet against the Australians because they have not seen enough of him. He did not play in the 2001 series, or in the World Cup. In home conditions, there is no more lethal bowler. India have set the pace in this tournament now, and the onus is on Australia and New Zealand to do the catching up. That happy state, however, can easily be damaged if the team does not keep up the momentum. (TCM). |

By Bansi Lal Tidyal Most of us have heard the name of Dara Singh. His name evokes wrestling scenes before us. But which Dara Singh? They are two. One is Dara Singh, the actor and wrestler and another is Dara Singh killer. People often take one for another. Dara Singh, the actor has worked in films like, King Kong, Dara Singh, Dhanna Jat, Jagga Dakku, Aye Tofan etc. and popular Ramanand's serial Ramayan. Whereas other Dara Singh Pahalwan is famous as 'killer' because he killed the killer of his elder brother. Piara Singh had three sons and three daughters. They were living in village Ditchipur of District Amritsar (Punjab). The elder son Inder Singh was very fond of wrestling. He with his efforts made Dara Singh a great wrestler. Later on Dara Singh learnt the techniques from Ustaad Sohan Singh of Lahore. And at the age of 15 years he humbled many top wrestlers. Dara Singh Killer was Sikh by religion, but had sacrificed his hair for the sake of wrestling. He was a powerful wrestler of 6'-6" height. At the age of 17 years, he was selected as policeman on his performance as he defeated all the six English wrestlers and after a few years was promoted as Sub-Inspector. During Japan and English war he was badly injured and sustained two bullets in his body. As his health failed, he quit the job. Later on, one day, when Dara Singh killer was sitting alone, some Japanese saw him, and took him to their officers. After interacting with him, the officer told him that why he does not join the army. Dara Singh thus joined Army. He helped Subash Chander Bose when he fought for the freedom of the country and re-occupied the lost post of his time, He even earned huge amount in wrestling and defeated top wrestlers in American free style and became champion in the year 1945. Dara Singh was also conferred with the little "Malaya" Champion. When Dara was 25 years, the Indian contractors invited King Kong who was more healthy and robust then Dara Singh Killer for a Bout. It was being presumed that Dara Singh will lose the bout but Dara Singh Killer not only defeated the mighty King Kong but also broke his one leg. Dara Singh was conferred with Rustam-e-Hind title also in 1963 and it is also heard that he was conferred with world champion title after defeating foreign wrestlers. Bad phase of his life started when he was busy in wrestling competitions in Germany. At home his elder brother Dalip Singh was murdered. On hearing the news he straight way reached Ditchipur and while seeing his elder brother Inder Singh lying on bed with one hand cut off, he vowed he will take revenge. After unidentified the culprits he caught hold of one of the killers and killed him. Then Dara was arrested and High Court of Amritsar awarded him death sentence in 1951. On appeal, the Supreme Court changed the same into life imprisonment. He spent remaining part of his life in Delhi and Ferojpur jails. Knowing the facts, the Chief Minister Bhim Sen Sacha of Punjab and famous film actor "Prithvi Raj Kapoor tried to save the champion out could not succeed. In 1955, Krishov of Russia and Marshal Balgaria during their visit to India met Prime Minister Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru. In their honour, a wrestling competition was organised. Dara Singh Killer defeated Atom Bomb a top foreign wrestler. This pleased the guests. At the same venue protestors were demanding his release. While the guests came to know the whole story. They remarked "if such a great wrestler would have been in our country, we would have respected and release him." Later on, on Nehru's intervention Dara was released by President of India. After his jail term, the situation at home had deteriorated. His only son who was first going to school had by this time left studies. And he also came to know that his namesake was earning money at his cost. Thus Dara Singh was none other than the actor Dara Singh. Dara Singh killer came to Jammu in 1978 to witness a Vishal Dangal held at Mini Stadium Parade Jammu alongwith Pahalwan Kartar Singh (Asian Champion). He was about 60 years but was figure of attraction at the dangal, Kartar Singh won Ist Mali of the dangal organised by the J&K Wrestling Association and Dara Singh was also honoured with handsome amount. Dara Singh actor is of the view that he defeated Dara Singh Killer in Bombay and Delhi whereas Dara Singh Killer denied these facts. After leaving wrestling, when Dara reached his village Ditchipur he got paralysed and he could not walk on foot. Since then he remained on bed. Dara Singh killer at last died at the age of 80 years at Ditchipur. |
