Ganguly discharged from nursing home

KOLKATA, Oct 26: Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly was today discharged from a private nursing home, where he was recuperating after operated upon for an abscess on his left thigh, but the doctors ruled him out of the November one tie against Australia in the ongoing Tri-series.

"I have been ruled out of the November one match. But with the care and attention I have got from the doctors here, I am sure I can return to onfield action shortly. I am feeling much better now", Ganguly told reporters at the nursing home, minutes before returning home.

Ganguly, who had earlier been operated twice within five days for the abscess, underwent a mini surgical procedure at the nursing home yesterday after complaining of excruciating pain in the affected part. (PTI)

Pak propose 3 Tests, 7 one-dayers against India

FAISALABAD (Pakistan), Oct 26: Pakistan has proposed playing three Tests and seven one-day internationals against India once the two countries recommence sporting ties, an event expected early next year, an official said today.

"We have proposed three tests and seven one-day internationals from February 19 to April 8 to the Board of Control for Cricket in India and (we are) now gearing up for the tour," Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman Samiul Hasan said.

Hasan told reporters the venues would include Karachi and Peshawar, venues South Africa refused to play recently due to security fears.

"A stadium in Quetta is also nearing completion and we have also plans to host a one-day match there," Hasan said.

Indian Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha on Wednesday offered to revive sporting links with Pakistan and break the long-standing impasse in bilateral cricket between the arch-rivals.

The two countries last played a Test series in 1999-2000. PCB chief executive Ramiz Raja earlier this month said Pakistan stands to earn 11 million dollars in 20 days of cricket with India.

The rivals played against each other in the World Cup this year but have not met in a bilateral series since India snapped sporting links following an attack on its Parliament in New Delhi in December 2001.

An Indian under-19 team is due to feature in a four-nation tournament in Pakistan along with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka later this month. (AFP)

Tendulkar highest run-getter in day-night matches

GWALIOR, Oct 26: Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar today became the leading run-getter in the day-and-night format of the one-day game, surpassing Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya’s 4,563 runs in 125 matches when he reached 60 against Australia in the TVS tri-series match at the Roop Singh Stadium here.

Tendulkar, playing his 112th day-and-night one-dayer, started the campaign at the 4,504-run mark.

Earlier, Tendulkar had become the first batsman in the history of one-day cricket to score 10,000 runs and presently has in excess of 12,000 runs to his credit in the shorter version of the game.

He made his one-day debut against Pakistan at Gujranwala, in the 1989-90 series. He has hit 34 centuries and 62 fifties prior to this match and enjoys an average of 44.60 and a strike rate of 86.47. (UNI)

India turn the tables on Australia

GWALIOR, Oct 26: India effected a rare Australian collapse to script their first win over the world champions in two years in the second one-day cricket match of the TVS Cup triseries here tonight.

Set to chase a challenging 284, Australia, cruising at 132 for no loss in 25 overs at one stage, lost nine of their wickets for 114 runs to start their campaign in the triseries, which has New Zealand as the third team, with a 37-run defeat in the thrilling day-night encounter.

India thrived on good all-round display by their players to outplay the Kangaroos and give their confidence a boost after four defeats in a row to the Aussies in one-sided encounters in recent exchanges.

For stand-in-skipper Rahul Dravid it was his fourth victory from six matches as captain.

While he has one defeat under his belt, one is a no result, thanks to the abandoned triseries opener against the Kiwis in Chennai on Thursday.

While the batsmen did their job — Sachin Tendulkar and V V S Laxman scored centuries each — the bowlers also showed great character in rallying from a hopeless position to turn the tables on the champion side.

It were the second spells of Zaheer Khan and Anil Kumble which fetched India four wickets for the addition of just nine runs as the packed Capt Roop Singh Stadium suddenly came to life with the unexpected twist in the tale. And when Sehwag dismissed Damien Martyn (16) and Michael Bevan (18) off the fourth and last ball of the 35th over to reduce the awesome Aussies to 176 for five, the celebrations had already begun, with the crackers saved from Diwali a day before being brought to good use by the cricket crazy Gwalior fans.

The success with the ball meant Sehwag made up for his duck in the afternoon after India had won the toss and elected to bat.

Man-of-the-match Sachin Tendulkar capped a good day out in the middle with the wicket of Ian Harvey (4) while Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer polished off the tail and reduce victory to a formality.

It was Zaheer Khan who triggered off the collapse in his incisive second spell by gifting India the prized wicket of Adam Gilchrist who looked dangerous with his crafty piece of batting. Gilchrist misjudged the left-arm speedster’s cunning delivery and tried to play across the line only to be clean bowled for 83 that contained eight hits to the fence.

Gilchrist’s 79-ball blitzkrieg overshadowed world’s highest test run-getter Matthew Hayden who was strangely subdued during 47-run knock that came off 76 balls with just two fours.

Other than the 132-run stand for the opening wicket, Australia failed to build any substantial partnerships, the next highest being the 40-run association between Brad Hogg (29) and Andy Bichel (14).

The 31-year-old Tendulkar was at his vintage best as he returned to torment Australia and scored his seventh century, the highest ever in one-day cricket by any batsman against the Aussies. The earlier record stood in name of former West Indies batsman Desmond Haynes who had six tons to his credit.

Tendulkar’s 100 came off 119 balls and included nine fours and a six while the in-form Laxman scored his 102 off 134 balls with the help of as many fours.

Stitching a 191-run partnership for the second wicket, the highest ever for any wicket at the Roop Singh Stadium, the duo set the stage for a late onslaught which saw India hammer 90 runs in the last ten overs, thanks to cameos by Yuvraj Singh (44 off 33 balls) and Ajit Agarkar (22 off 10 balls). India last won a one-day match against them in 2001 in Indore and were handed humiliating thrashings in one-sided contests in the World Cup six months ago in South Africa.

But it did not begin on the right note for the hosts whose first match of the triseries was washed out.

Explosive opener Virender Sehwag was dismissed off the very third ball of the first over by speedster Nathan Bracken when he snicked at a widish delivery and Matthew Hayden did well to take a diving catch to give his team the breakthrough that it needed.

But a surprisingly sluggish show in the field and a bowling attack of the Aussies that lacked the sting helped Indian recover from the early setback.

A little tentative at first, Tendulkar opened up soon and hit Bathan Bracken for a couple of fours to gain in confidence.

Speedster Brad Williams had a nightmarish sixth over when he was hit for 12 runs with Laxman hitting two fours and Tendulkar one to be pulled out of the attack immediately.

India raced to 74 for one in the 15 overs and then slowed down things a little to concentrate on consolidating the innings even as the two batsmen reached their half-centuries with some intelligent batting. Tendulkar reached his 68th half-century with a four off Ian Harvey with the help of nine fours. Laxman was run out for 102 with Andrew Symonds making a direct hit and Yuvraj too returned to pavilion within a space of eight runs as Indians tried to accelerate their scoring rate. But Yuvraj ensured he heaped more misery on Williams by hammering one six and three fours in one over by the bowler who was touring India for the first tie. (PTI)

Advani now aims at World Billiards title

NEW DELHI, Oct 26: Newly coronated world Snooker champion Pankaj Advani is eager to convert his win into a grand double at the World Billiards Championships in Hyderabad next month, a tough prospect, he said, is worth "going for".

"I will surely try my level best to win the World Billiards title to go with this (Snooker title)," Advani told PTI from Jiangmen in China.

"But it will be a tough task considering the field of opponents," said the 19-year-old.

Advani yesterday became only the second Indian to win the World Snooker Championship when he defeated Saleh Mohammad of Pakistan 11-6.

It took India 19 years to bring back the coveted crown after late O B Agarwal had won it in 1984.

The youngest national Snooker champion, however, said Billiards was his first love in cue sports.

"I enjoy playing snooker and have been doing so for the last ten months. But I think naturally I am a Billiards player."

Advani finished third in 2002 National Billiards Championship and will vie for honours in the World Billiards Championship to be held in Hyderabad from November 17.

In all 48 cueists from 18 countries will participate in the event which will be played on a 150 up format.

Advani, who is the only cueist after the legendary Geet Sethi to have won three titles in the same national championship, said he would take a couple of day’s break after returning to India and "then start my preparations for the billiards championship with the state ranking billiards tournament in Bangalore starting next week".

On his title winning run in China, Advani said "it was great to win the title as only one Indian had won it before this.

"I was immensely benefitted by the special training I received in united kingdom before the tournament. There I could play against the best cuists in the world which gave a new dimension to my game."

Advani, alongwith former Asian champion Yasin Merchant, Manan Chandra and Rafat Habib, was sent to train in UK by the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India under the Union Sports Ministry’s scheme for promising sportspersons.

The Bangalore-based player showed tremendous maturity throughout the tournament especially when he was down 1-4 and 0-3 in the first two rounds of the knock-out stage respectively but kept his cool to win 5-4.

"I just managed to win those matches," he said looking back at those victories.

Indian team coach Michael Ferreira was all praise for his young pupil saying "his (Advani) strength is his mental composure and a mature head."

"The way he came back in the first two rounds of the knock-out phase proves his potential," said Ferreira, a former world billiards champion. (PTI)

Narang wins first gold for India, Olympic champion shocked

HYDERABAD, Oct 26: Gagan Narang shot the first gold medal for India at the inaugural Afro-Asian Games in his home-town by winning the 10-metre air rifle event, while Olympic gold medalist and World No.1 Cai Yulin tumbled out of the medal race at the Hyderabad Central University shooting range here today.

An hour later, Samresh Jung added a silver to India’s kitty, finishing second to Chinese ace shooter Tang Zongliang in the 50m free pistol event.

Samresh, who hails from Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh, shot to glory in the 17th Commonwealth Games at Manchester.

Asian Games gold medalist Tang Zongliang was a runaway winner in his pet event, totalling 667.6 points, including 96.6 in the final round while Samaresh Jung pipped South African Daniel Francois Van Tonder for the silver, by 1.5 points. The Indian gathered 641.9 (93.9 in the final round), which was a good 10 points less than his commonwealth silver-winning performance.

The 21-year-old "self-taught" Narang, who entered the final with 592 points, one behind Egypt’s Mohamed Ismail, shot 103.7 in the final to take the gold with a total of 695.7. Ismail, after mustering 101 points in the final round, had to content with bronze as his countryman Ragaey Abd Alla clinched the silver, firing a total of 694.7 (103.7 in the final). Narang, who took to shooting casually as a four-year-old while holidaying in Delhi, put behind the tragedy of losing his grandfather four days ago as he hit the bull’s eye twice.

Chinese Olympic champion Cai Yulin finished with 590 points, including a bull’s eye, before the final round. Although he could muster 102.3 points, the highest in the final round, it was not enough to fetch him a medal.

However, it was Narang all the way, after a sluggish first shot, in the final round as the youngster, who won a silver at an international meet in Germany recently, reeled off scores of 9.7, 10.5, 10.5, 10.5, 10.4, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.4 and 10.5, edging out the Egyptian by a clear point.

Another Indian in the fray, Sandeep tarte finished with 692.9 (101.9 in the final).

Exciting Indo-Pak battle on the cards in Hockey

HYDERABAD: India would go all out to repeat their Asia Cup final act against a revenge-seeking Pakistani side in their last league match that promises to take the cherry in the men’s hockey event tomorrow.

Although the two Asian giants have already qualified for the semifinals with 100 per cent win record, the match would help determine the pool positions and the opponents for the next stage.

Both the sides have yet to play to their potential in the tournament, but are expected to match each other in skillful play and style.

Considering the recent performance at the international level, India hold a slight edge over Pakistan, a fact conceded by the Pakistan’s foreign coach Roelant Oltmans.

"Last couple of years India is playing well. At the moment India are a little further up than Pakistan. But you never know and you can not say who will win the match between the two sides, which is always exciting" Oltmans told PTI here.

Both the countries have decided to field virtually a secod-string team in the competition with Pakistan resting Sohail Abbas, Kashif Jawaid and goalkeeper Ahmed Alam, while Dhanraj Pillay, Baljit Singh Dhillon and Baljit Singh Saini are missing from the Indian side.

Despite their indifferent form, the mood in the Pakistani camp is upbeat for tomorrow’s match, which promises to be a nerve-wrecking one.

Pakistan were given a scare by Nigeria in their opener on Thursday and the team looked out of sorts in the first half in their match against Egypt yesterday.

Though Nigeria put up a tough challenge for India yesterday, chief coach Rajinder Singh was quite confident of his boy’s abilities.

"It will continue the way we always play against Pakistan — go all out and beat them," he said.

Singh, however, was little wary of the team’s performance in the first two matches — against Egypt and Nigeria — where the side conceded a few goals.

"We are not poor in defending. Nigeria played a tough game yesterday and so we tried to play safe as we did not want to risk injuries to our players before the crucial matches.

"Deepak (Thakur) got injured which slowed us a bit against Nigeria," the coach said.

A win against Pakistan tomorrow can help the side in more than one way.

Sudhir bags bronze, China wins gold in Weightlifting

HYDERABAD: Fighting an elbow injury, Cpr Sudhir Kumar won a bronze for India while China lifted gold in the 69 kg men weightlifting championship being held at the Kotla Vijyabhaskara Reddy Indoor Stadium here today.

Chen Chufu cleared 140 kg and 175 kg in snatch and, clean and jerk to put a combined effort of 315 kg to claim the gold.

Thailand’s Suphalak Sitthisak aggregated 292.5 kg (130 kg, 162.5 kg) to lift the silver, while Sudhir was relegated to the third spot with a tally of 290 kg (135 kg and 155 kg).

Twenty four year old Sudhir Kumar, who is nursing an injured elbow, got a thunderous applause from the home crowd when he opted to open with 127.5 kg and raised the weight by five kg to get a clean chit in the snatch event. The crowd cheered him more when he successfully lifted 135 kgs.

Sitthisak had a flawless lift of 125 kg in the first round and improved it to 130 kg in the second but failed in the in the third round effort to lift 132.5 kg to finish second.

The SAI trained Sudhir, who is with Indian Navy and lives in Banagalore disappointed the crowd in the clean and jerk event as he failed in his second and third attempts to clear 160 kg after lifting 155 kg in the first round.
