Improve fire services

Sir,

Despite many odds, India, during of last fifty six years of Independence, has emerged as an Industrial power. There has been rapid progress in Agricultural, Information and Technology, Nuclear/Physical/Chemical Sciences, Engineering, Space, Ocean, Surface, Rail road/Air Transport, Five Star Hotels, Oil and Gas, Science and Technology, Tourism, Steel, Power and irrigation sectors. Today, our country's economy is stronger to achieve new heights in space exploration and technological developments. The nation, legtimately is proud of such achievements.

The rapid pace of development in every sphere has brought in with it the in-built life-safety hazards and risks. Even after fifty six years of Independence, the general public lax safety awareness. There are number of safety laws but these are rarely implemented. If safety precautions are observed scrupulously, a number of fire accidents can be prevented. Every year, colossal monetary loss of property and some times accompanied with loss of precious human and animal lives is suffered. The fire services play very vital role in saving life and property but till now, fire services all over the country, whether maintained by Central, State Governments, Public Sectors undertaking, Municipal Corporation, Councils, Committees are under staffed and inadequately equipped and over loaded with work. There is urgent need to upgrade fire services effectively to cope with present days work load which is increasing day by day due to rapid industrialization and technological developments all over the country. And also there is great need of more and more fire engineers to share the work load in proportion to other Engineering fields of the country to combat the life risks produced thereby. Moreover, this may help the Government to settle down the unemployment problem somehow, being this a new aspect of career.

Besides, I am also of the opinion in support of Central Government Circular recently released to all Chief Secretaries of States in Indian Union to provide separate identity to all Fire Services organisations in this country to grow under one flag, uniform and rank structure of their own. It may come up with new interest to give new direction to frustrated youth to serve their country enthusiastically.

Shortage of water in Shivalik Puram

Sir,

There is acute shortage of potable water in Mohalla Shivalik Puram (Sector No. 2) Janipura Housing Colony,. People are facing this problem for the last so many years. Inspite of so many complaints lodged with PHE authorities at Bakshi Nagar and Janipura officers, they failed to address this water problem. PHE authorities had laid 1-5" water supply pipe in this Mohalla in 1992 when there were less households. Now the population has increased manifold and the water problem continues to multiply. In view of the grievances expressed above, we the residents of said mohalla would like to bring this fact to the notice of the PHE authorities so that they may undertake steps to augment water supply in the locality.

Resuming Indo- Pak cricket ties

Sir,

The initiative of the Government of India to resume cricket ties with Pakistan have received world wide commendation. The cricket lovers are eagerly waiting the clash of two archrival teams-India and Pakistan. Due to Pakistan's pro terrorism policy, the cricket ties between two countries had snapped. Pakistan President Musharraf had been advocating time and again, that the two countries should play cricket. India has never allowed politics to play with games. However, it had become a compulsion for India to take such a course.

Though India has taken a right step to resume the game it is incumbent upon Pakistan to play the game fairly this time. Terrorism and games would not go side by side. Pak has to contain terrorism either today or tomorrow. It has to live like a neighbour.

Hostile atmosphere would only vitiate the matter future. Games are played in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. Participation of people in the games is a must. If people are writhing in pain, are bleeding profusely, have no joy in heart, how could they participate and how can they express enthusiasm.

We hope that by resuming ties and by solving the issues confronting the two nations, an era of peace and tranquillity would usher again.

Yours etc...
