30-hour-long hostage drama ends Excelsior Special Correspondent SRINAGAR, Oct 21: Police and security forces have finally succeeded in evacuating all the civilians who had been held hostage by militants during a cordon-and-search operation at Thiarina village in Shopian area of Pulwama district. Both the militants, who had created high drama by holding six civilians on gun point inside a house, have been shot dead by security forces. Meanwhile security forces have killed at least four more militants and 17 civilians have been left wounded in a grenade explosion in Kashmir valley since last evening..............more |

EC raises ceiling of expenditure by candidates NEW DELHI, Oct 21: Taking a "practical" view of poll expenses incurred by individual candidates, the Union Cabinet today decided to raise the ceiling of expenditure by them for Lok Sabha elections from Rs 15 to Rs 25 lakh and those for the coming Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh from Rs six to Rs ten lakh..............more |
