Laxman prevents Indias debacle MOHALI, Oct 20: India put their enviable home reputation in jeopardy before relying on V V S Laxmans class and determination to save the blushes as the two-match Test series against New Zealand ended in a draw here today. After failing to avoid the follow-on by just seven runs, the hosts were in real danger of suffering their first series defeat at home for a fairly long time after being 18 for three at one stage. But Laxman (67 not out) and newcomer Aakash Chopra (52) saved the day with a resolute 110-run fourth wicket partnership. The Indians were a pale shadow of themselves as they struggled right through the final day to save the embarrassment of a defeat and also to keep their reputation intact in what was billed as the revenge series. The Indians scored 136 for four in their second innings before play was called off with six mandatory overs still remaining. The visitors raised hopes of recording their first-ever series win on Indian soil after dramatically bundling out India for 424, seven runs short of the follow-on target and then tightening the grip on the match by making early inroads into the formidable Indian batting line up. Although the Test series ended in a draw, New Zealand definitely emerged the moral victors having outplayed the hosts in almost all the departments of the game in their own den. The Kiwi bowlers, however, got some assistance from the fifth day track. Laxman, who remained unbeaten with a patient 104 in the first innings, stood bravely amidst the ruins as he took upon himself the task of saving the match on a day which saw as many as eight wickets fall mainly due to some fiery bowling by Daryl Tuffey. The home teams battle for survival began on a disastrous note as they lost first innings centurion Virender Sehwag for just one run with Stephen Fleming latching on to a smart catch at first slip off Tuffey who generated a fair amount of pace in his first spell. Chopra went for a forward defensive shot but could not keep the ball to the ground and Mark Richardson held on to the catch at forward short leg. His 160-ball knock was studded with eight boundaries and came in 228 minutes. Needing 41 runs to avoid the follow-on when play began this morning, the Indians lost the remaining four wickets in dramatic fashion to fold up at 424 shortly after the drinks break to raise Kiwis hopes of registering their first series win on Indian soil. Resuming at the overnight score of 390 for six in reply to New Zealands mammoth first innings total of 630 for six declared, the Indian tailenders failed to rise to the occasion as the lanky paceman Daryl Tuffey tested the Indian late order batsmen with a fiery spell. First to depart was Anil Kumble (5) who was run out following a brilliant piece of fielding by Tuffey. He stopped the ball with a diving effort and regaining balance quickly Tuffey hit the stumps with an under-arm flick that caught Kumble well short. Harbhajan Singh (8) was next to go backing up too far at the non-strikers end. The off-spinner also got the third umpires verdict after Ian Butler managed to deflect the ball on to the stumps off a firm straight drive by Laxman. The two quick wickets saw India slump to 408 for eight and the threat of follow-on loomed large at that stage. The stylish Laxman had to shoulder the responsibility of steering India out of the follow-on threat and tried to shield Balaji as much as possible by refusing to take the runs in the first few balls of every over. Laxman completed his fifth Test century when he took a couple of runs off Tuffey and looked quite comfortable in the middle despite wickets falling at regular intervals. Laxman and Balaji took the score to within seven runs of the follow-on target before Balajis luck ran out, falling prey to Tuffey off a gem of a delivery which swung out from a good length spot. Balaji only managed to snick the ball and wicketkeeper Hart made no mistake this time. Laxman remained unbeaten on a 262-ball 104, an effort which contained 11 boundaries and compiled in 422 minutes. This is the fourth occasion that New Zealand have enforced a follow-on against India and only the second time on Indian soil. Not a happy Test series for India By Ravi Shastri The Videocon Series has not been a very happy Test series for India. After many years, they were shown to be the worse team playing at home, which proves how important advance planning is in this game. New Zealand came here better prepared, more focused, and won the honours even if they could not win either of the Tests. The first two hours of the last day were dramatic. Two run-outs - one of them senseless - forced India to follow on, and then three quick wickets fell to the seamers giving New Zealand a glimpse of victory. As I had mentioned in my preview, the taller New Zealand bowlers were the more likely to get purchase from tracks here, and Darryl Tuffy showed why extra lift on any surface can be a problem for batsmen. But this wicket had nothing in it for the bowlers after the first hour in the morning, and I was quite sure that India would be able to get over the minor crisis unless the batsmen did something very silly. Though three wickets fell cheaply, V V S Laxman, who has been the pick of the Indian batsmen for me, played another fine knock to thwart the New Zealand side. In both Tests, Laxman has looked the best timer of the ball and the best judge of line and length. Good scores in this series should put his mind at ease, which is important from the teams point of view for I expect him to be a key batsman in Australia Tendulkar failed again. He has looked scratchy in both Tests, but for a player of his class and experience, some quality time spent in the middle, a couple of well-timed shots will help him rediscover form. The one-day series, where he opens the innings and has to play his natural attacking game, should help him find his groove soon. Once his feet start moving again, the rhythm will be back and with that the runs, I am sure. But there will be concern at Indias lack of progress in Test match cricket. The same problems, the same issues persist. Everybody thought New Zealand would be a cakewalk, but by the time the second Test got over, it was India clearly on the back-foot. What this shows is that unless the wickets are rank turners, India will struggle to win even at home. That is a grave situation to be in.(TCM) |

By Nathan Astle The second Test match in Videocon test series has turned out to be a tough test match this has turned out to be. Everyone involved would have been expecting a much more sporting wicket than the one served up to us. I have written this article at the end of the fourth day, and it does not look like the Indian team are going to get any revenge for the series back in NZ last year. I feel your commentators and your journalists have not given our team enough credit for the way we have played over here. All we have heard since getting here are how flat the wickets have been, how slow we have batted and how good your spinners are. To be fair your team came to NZ and lost in our conditions. We have come here and performed very well in your backyard and have adapted to the conditions we have been given. I do not think for a minute you will get any argument from anyone that the pitches have not been up to test match standard, but as players we can only play on what we are given. It has been an outstanding test for our batters. This is the second time a NZ team have had four centurions in one innings and I feel privileged to have been involved in both of them. Right from the start when Flemming won the toss we had our minds on only batting once in the game as the pitch looked very dry. During the first three days it was great to see so many contrasting hundreds. From Richie grinding out his 100 and also being able to put on a comedy act in there as well with his cramp, (why he carried on sweeping no will know) to Sewhag with his usual shots all round the ground, I think the only people not to enjoy them would be the bowlers on either side. By the time this is printed everyone will know the outcome and all i can say is I hope we have come out on the positive side. From a personal point of view I am disappointed that I am returning home and will miss the one day series with Australia and India as it is going to be a very exciting one. We have a big season coming up at home so to be available for that the best course of action is to get home and get my knee sorted out. One thing in one day games you can count on here are alot of runs, it is never alot of fun for the bowlers. Australia are without their front line bowlers, India and NZ have been playing in familiar conditions, with all this taken into account it makes for a very close tournament. Obviously i wish my guys all the best for this series and the following games in Pakistan. In the month I have been here I have seen alot of interesting things. From cows wandering the street, Stephen Fleming riding an elephant and trying to become a TV star to the passion and knowledge shown towards cricket at the games, it has all been another great experience hope before I finish playing I get the chance to come back and do it all again.(TCM) |
Dibyendu Barua claims Tata International Chess title JAMSHEDPUR, Oct 20: Commonwealth champion Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua won the Tata International Open Chess Tournament here today after a quick draw with GM Saidali Iuldashev of Uzbekistan in the 11th and final round. Barua and GM Alexander Fominyh of Russia scored nine points each out of the possible 11 but Barua won the title as he had a much better progressive score thanks to his brilliant 6/6 start in the tournament. After a three-way tie for the third spot Iuldashev had the best tiebreak score and was declared third while Sergei Ovsejevitsch of Ukraine finished fourth. Deep Sengupta was the surprise packet amongst the top ten as he turned the tables on GM Marat Dzhumaev of Uzbekistan in the final round and finished fifth in the overall standings. Deep also had the distinction of grabbing his second IM norm in the process and is now just one norm away from becoming an International Master. Also making his maiden International Master norm was Valay Parikh who lost in the final round against Ovsejevitsch. Six players GM Pentyala Harikrishna, GM Abhijit Kunte, GM Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh, GM Dmitry Svetushkin of Moldova, IM Tahir Vakhidov of Uzbekistan and Parsvnath Chess Champion R B Ramesh were tied for 6-11th place. The final round was not devoid of excitement except on the top board where Barua and Iuldashev played only for a couple of minutes. Fominyh had to use all his experience against GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly who missed out on some promising continuations in the middle game arising out of a sicilian defence. Playing black, Fominyhs king was stranded in the centre and only timely exchanges by the Russian enabled him to neutralise whites advantage. In the ensuing endgame, Ganguly was gradually outplayed. Sengupta was very lucky against Dzhumaev who showed his class in the middle game to get an overwhelming position. However, Sengupta just hung in there by making precise defensive moves and much to his relief Dzhumaev ultimately lost the game under time pressure. Harikrishna beat IM V Saravanan in a complicated game arising out of an irregular opening where the former played white. Saravanan was pushed to the wall in the middle game but came out well under pressure to reach what should have been a drawn endgame. Haris perseverance paid off as he caught Saravanans king in a mating net. (PTI) |
