Peace process

Sir,

The misconception of Pakistan that India would not involve in a serious dialogue leading to the resolution of Kashmir and other disputes is quite baseless because it is not only April 18, 2003 that the Prime Minister of India had offered his hand of friendship to Pakistan at a rally in Srinagar rather he has time and again been emphasizing that India is ready for talk with Pakistan, if Pakistan stops sponsoring cross-border terrorism. But never had this been taken seriously by Pakistan. How can India feel like coming on peace table for negotiation with Pakistan, which has all along been bleeding its national, sponsoring proxy war not only in Kashmir but also in various other parts of the country.

Pakistan appears to have forgotten its own history as to who had all along been advocating for peace. Right from British rule when a handful of separatist leaders including Md Ali Jinnah who wanted formation of Pakistan on two nation theory, it were Indian leaders, who came forward for peace with them. This needs no looking back too far. If last five years of history is taken into consideration, the Indian approach for peace initiative with Pakistan is very well in the knowledge of world leaders.

Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Prime Minister of India had first extended his hands for peace with Pakistan by travelling all the way by bus to Lahore but it was not properly reciprocated by Pakistan. On the other hand, India had to face unprovocative war of Kargil. This is the one peace initiative by India which created such a turmoil among Pakistani army that it has overthrown its own democratically elected Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif to replace with an army ruler, General Pervez Musharraf.

It is needless to mention that Pakistani Army had created ISI, which was given absolute power for sponsoring terrorism in India. Pakistan army is hand in gloves with Al-Qaeda and Talibani forces, which is quite known to every peace initiative world leaders. America has also identified five Pakistanis army officers, who had links with Al-Qaeda activists and demanded their extradition from Pakistan. This indicates that Pakistan Govt itself is involved in sponsoring terrorism not only in India but also in other parts of the world.

Even inspite of this fact, India had once more invited Pakistan's Army ruler, General Pervez Musharraf to Agra for peace talk but what happened is well known to every one. Thus, Pakistan's accusation on India for it not being serious for peace talk is quite baseless and unfounded. The fact, however, is that Pakistan wants to win battle by sponsoring proxy-war in Kashmir because it neither dares to fight war with India because of its shameful defeat on three previous occasions nor dares to initiate a peace talk with India for it is against the ethics of Pakistan Army and ISI.

Any undemocratic efforts by Pakistan to resolve Kashmir problem will end in fiasco. Pakistan should, thus, try to put its more energy in peaceful co-existence with its immediate neighbour which could alone give solace to its countrymen, who feel themselves culturally one with India. To binding of Indian culture is so strong in them that both Indian and Pakistanis outside the sub-continent live like brothers. Even at their home, Pakistani prefers to see Indian movie and Indian soaps in TV. This very well indicates how they are attached to Indian culture but the Pakistani Army ruler is not at all giving proper respect to their sentiments. On the other hand, they are getting tough on their pro-Indian voices.

One can very well visualize this from an example that when father of Noor Fatima returned to his home with his already convalescent daughter, he and his wife were subjected to rigorous interrogation by Pakistan Intelligence Agencies to know ‘their real purpose’ of visiting India.

Pakistan should, thus, try to develop mutual trust with India as trust alone can beget peace.

Confusing signals

Sir,

Confusing signals-your editorial of 14 Oct highlights the games politicians play these days. It is not the problem of J&K State only. Take any State politicians of today are indulging in the dirtiest games to amass wealth and keep themselves in power. Who is concerned about the country or the welfare of the public? The only interest they have is how to keep their chair intact. What has Mulayam Singh done. A jumbo ministry of 98 miniters. Who will bear the cost? The poor public and none else.

The political thinking of the country needs to undergo sea change. There needs to be national debate on this burning problem. Every MLA who does not get ministerial berth forms his own party and threatens the PM/CM to bring him down. A new political party is born every second day. This needs to be stopped.

I have a proposal for the academicians and general public to debate upon. Let us have three party system. At present we have three entities at the Centre. They are Congress, Left Front and NDA. The politicians should be given choice to join any group once for all and thereafter give whatever name they want to give to their outfit. After that there should not be any new party and no new fronts. Similar arrangement should be in the States. Have fixed tenure for the Parliament and State assemblies. No Dal-badloos. Lay down limit of ministers according to strength of MP, MLAs. There should be Law enacted for this. It is a broad proposal which is open to discussion.

Yours etc.....
