MOHALI, Oct 18: Virender Sehwag gave ample proof of his class with a scintillating century as India gave a befitting reply to New Zealands imposing first innings total on the third day of the series-deciding second cricket Test here today. Sehwag was batting on 128 while stand-in captain Rahul Dravid was on nine to take India to 203 for one when stumps were drawn for the day. The 24-year-old Sehwag set the PCA Stadium ablaze with an array of blistering strokes to not only notch up his fourth Test century but also help India give a good reply to New Zealands first innings total of 630 for six declared. India need 228 runs more to avoid the follow-on. The Delhi opener, often criticised for throwing away his wicket after getting the starts, did justice to his potential tearing the Kiwi bowling attack to shreds on a track which showed no signs of deteriorating. Sehwags runs came off 213 balls with the help of 16 fours and two sixes. Dravid was quite subdued considering his good form and he took 55 balls to score his nine runs as his first Test as skipper appeared heading for a draw. After New Zealand declared their innings 40 minutes before the lunch break, Sehwag and Akash Chopra (60) showed no signs of being under any pressure, providing a solid platform with a 164-run opening partnership. Chopra, who made his Test debut in Ahmedabad with scores of 42 and 31, struck his first half century in Test cricket by taking a single off spinner Daniel Vettori. Dravid, who joined the action after Chopras dismissal, was a picture of concentration as he played watchfully and was quite content in giving the strike to the free-flowing Sehwag. Earlier, Craig McMilllan became the fourth centurion for the Kiwis who added 94 quick runs to their overnight score of 536 for five before declaring their innings at 630 for six, leaving India with a challenging task of scoring 431 runs to avoid the follow on. New zealands total was the fourth highest effort by an opposition team on Indian soil. The highest total by the rival has been 652 for seven declared made by England in Chennai in 1984-85. (PTI) |
Lee also will miss one-day series in India SYDNEY, Oct 18: Australian fast bowler Brett Lee will miss the forthcoming one-day series in India after tearing an abdominal muscle during the second cricket Test against Zimbabwe today. Lee bowled just three overs during the second days play and was later taken to a nearby hospital for diagnostic scans which confirmed the tear. Lee will take no further part in the remainder of the second Test. "Im bitterly disappointed," said Lee. "I pretty much knew from my first ball (this morning) that something was wrong. "Ive really worked hard on my fitness, so to miss this tour now is a major blow." His replacement in the 14-man tour party led by Ricky Ponting will be announced soon. Lee joins fast bowlers Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie and leg spinner Stuart MacGill on the sidelines with injuries. While McGrath underwent a second operation on a recurring ankle injury, Gillespie suffered a side strain during Australias innings and 175-run win over Zimbabwe in the first Test in Perth on Monday. Macgill tore a calf muscle during the Test. Also sidelined for the tour is legspinner Shane Warne, whos serving a 12-month suspension for taking a banned diuretic. (AP) |
Shoaib banned for Test, one-day internationals LAHORE, Oct 18: Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was today banned for one Test match and two one-day internationals for using abusive language against South African player Paul Adams. South African team management had filed a complaint to International Cricket Councils match referee Clive Lloyd against Shoaib after the first days play of the first cricket Test yesterday. "This incident was unnecessary and unacceptable," Lloyd said in a statement. Akhtar breached the ICCs code of conduct and used offensive language against Adams toward the end of the first days play when the South African tail-ender was batting. At a hearing with Lloyd, the Pakistan paceman was found guilty of using language that was obscene, offensive or of a generally insulting nature to another player. Akhtar earlier breached the ICC code of conduct for making an obscene gesture to the crowd during the fifth one-day international in Zimbabwe in December 2002 and was banned for one limited overs international and fined 50 per cent of his match fee. He was also banned for two one-day internationals and fined 75 per cent of his match fee in may this year for ball tampering in a tri-series in Sri Lanka. |
Ganguly operated upon in Kolkata KOLKATA, Oct 18: Indian cricket skipper Sourav Ganguly today underwent a minor surgery to cure abscess on his left upper thigh which forced him to miss the ongoing Mohali Test against New Zealand. Ganguly, who had undergone a minor surgery for the same problem on Tuesday in Chandigarh, was admitted to a private hospital this morning where the doctors performed an immediate operation in order to make him fit before the beginning of one-day Tri-series involving India, New Zealand and Australia beginning on October 23. "Ganguly is now ok. He is now under bed rest in the hospital," doctor M Nandi, who operated on the Indian skipper told PTI. Ganguly had returned to the city last night complaining of pain in the affected area. (PTI) |
Sports Master By Sanjeev Sharma The confused state of affairs in Martial Arts practiced by teen-agers in Jammu and Kashmir is due to the negligence of parents and irresponsible attitude of the educational institutions. While institutions hire the instructors without ascertaining their credentials, the parents remain high and dry, feeling proud of their wards winning medals, little knowing that these are of no use. When parents are unaware of the genuineness of an Association (teaching the martial arts), the instructors in connivance with school managements think only how they could fill up their pockets. Instead of providing a quality sport to their students, most of the educational institutions are hand-in-glove with instructors, preferred only those who shared the fee taken from the students with the management. Furthermore, these instructors, at the time of their appointment at a particular school, make commitments of winning medals for them and when they could not do so, they enter into mal-practices and hold competitions of their own just to present a medal to each and every participant practicing under them. The stunning disclosures were made by one time instructor turned cop, Sanjeev Sharma, who has three medals to his credit in the Nationals, in a chat with EXCELSIOR. Sanjeev, practiced Martial Art (Taekwondo ITF style) for 11 long years between 1991-2002, pleaded before the parents that they must verify about a particular form of Martial Art and instructor thereof before sending their ward to them. He was also general secretary of the J&K Taekwondo Association before joining the Jammu and Kashmir Police. "People often sent their children to an instructor who teaches a form of Martial Art which is not recognised by the State Government, thus wasting both money and time. Winning medals under the banner of an unrecognised game never serve the purpose, so before allowing their children to practice Martial Art, parents must approach the State Sports Council, the highest sports body in J&K to know about the validity and existence of a particular game or Association", said Sharma. Sanjeev, who won his first bronze medal in North-East and West India ITF Taekwon-Do Championship held at Ahmedabad in Gujarat in 44 to 50 kg weight group, never opted for high graded belts (including black) which otherwise has become a fashion among those practicing Martial Art. "Getting a graded belt in ITF and WTF form of Taekwon-Do is not an easy task, it takes a lot of labour and dedication. But the self-styled instructors with little regard for the art, have maligned the image of a belt holder and sanctity of the belt itself by presenting even high graded belts, including black, to their trainees within one year of their practice", elaborated Sanjeev who won his second bronze medal in 1994 in VIth North-East India ITF Taekwon-Do Championship held at Sonepat in Hayana in 52 kg weight. Winning his third silver medal in December 1997, Sanjeevs valuable suggestion to those interested in Karate was to join the game as early as possible to excel at the right age. |

Inter-college
competitions Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 18: Brilliant innings of 73 runs studded with 11 boundaries by skipper Munish today guided PG (Post Graduate Departments) Arts to a 59 runs victory over Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences (ASCOMS) in the first round match of the inter-college Cricket tournament underway at University grounds, here. Earlier, batting first after winning the toss, PG Arts set a target of 220 runs in the allotted 40 overs for the loss of nine wickets, which, in reply, ASCOMS could not chase and bowled out for 160 runs in 33.3 overs. Arts skipper made highest 73 runs with 11 hits to the fence while Imran contributed 43 including one six and four boundaries. Pankaj and Manjeet contributed 20 and 16 runs respectively. From ASCOMS, Ansar bagged two wickets. Rouf, Nadeem, Umar and Deepak shared one each. In reply, ASCOMS could not reach the required target and lost all their wickets for 160 runs in 33.3 overs. Ansar was top scorer with 45 runs made with the help of one six and four boundaries. Atif contributed 24 (4x4) while Rouf and Deepak added 17 and 11 runs respectively. Naresh claimed two wickets for PG Arts, followed by Pankaj, Varun, Manjeet and Munish who shared one wicket each. Inter-college competitions are being organised by the Department of Physical Education, University of Jammu. J&K Bank wins Super League Football tourney Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 18: Jammu and Kashmir Bank won the Super League Football Tournament beating Jammu and Kashmir Police by a solitary goal in the final played at MA Stadium, here today. The only goal was scored by Intikhab Alam on a pass from Deepak Sangral from the right flank in the 68th minute of the match. On the concluding day, Monika of HSS Bahu Fort bagged girls under-17 100 meters gold while Kamaljit Kour of GHS Bhour Camp and Asha Devi of HS Bhandrore bagged second and third positions respectively. In under-14 100 meters final, the gold went to Sunita Devi of GMS Sumah. Neha Kumari of GHS Jourian and Anju Sharma of GMS Sumah finished second and third respectively. District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Jammu, B N Bhat distributed prizes among the winners and runners-up of various events held on third day today. Bowlers had to take a back-seat By Ravi Shastri This is easily the worst wicket I have seen in Videocon Test match played on in recent years. When the advantage is so much in favour of one skill - whether batting or bowling - it makes for an unequal contest, which is very poor advertisement for Test cricket, as well as those who pump in so much money for the game. Less than 10 wickets have failed in the first three days, which gives a clear idea of the benefit for the batsmen and agony for bowlers. Five hundreds have also been scored, most of them very fine innings, but if the bowlers have no hope in hell, the worth of these innings stands considerably devalued. From New Zealands approach, it seemed apparent that they wanted to draw the series. I can understand where Stephen Fleming comes from, for very few sides have managed to survive against India in India. Even Australia lost in 2001, so a 0-0 score-line is a triumph of sorts. Fleming will be happy that his main batsmen have come good and thwarted the Indian spinners. Nathan Astle made a fine hundred at Ahmedabad, and there were four more centurions at Mohali, the best of them being Craig McMillan who completed his hundred on Saturday. McMillan had been short of runs for a while, but appears to have rediscovered his form on this tour, with two half-centuries in the first test and the century here. He got good support from Daniel Vettori, who impresses me with every outing. He is a fine bowler whose batting has picked up so much that he must now be considered a genuine all-rounder. From Indias point of view, a hundred for Virender Sehwag was not only entertainment value for the spectators, but also good for his morale. He has played some brilliant cameos in the recent past, but needed a good solid outing in the middle. With Dravid giving him company, and Sachin, Laxman and Yuvraj to bat still, New Zealands hopes of winning this match must be in ruins already. The bowlers have had to take a back-seat on this track. There has been no help for either pacers or spinners, though I must say that Anil Kumbles never-give-up attitude was admirable. He looked Indias best bowler by far, and all talk of his being over the hill must be pooh-poohed. The fact that even Kumble, who has won so many matches at home, was reduced to a long-drawn struggle for success puts the nature of the wicket in proper perspective.
