Rahul Dravid to lead as Sourav opts out MOHALI, Oct 15: It will be a baptism by fire for Rahul Dravid who will be at the helm of affairs as India desperately seek a pride, salvaging victory against New Zealand and clinch the series in the second Test starting here tomorrow after the embarrassing draw at Ahmedabad. Dravid was asked to take over after Sourav Ganguly was ruled out for the second Test after a minor operation yesterday failed to clear up an abscess on his left thigh. Local hero Yuvraj Singh is likely to get a chance in absence of Ganguly and it remains to be seen if India would be under greater pressure sans the Bengal Tiger. Branded as a "grudge series", Indians dominated the first Test but could not translate the advantage into victory and the blame game began. India had maintained that they lost to New Zealand in the away series early this year because the Kiwis had "Doctored" their wickets and wanted to settle the score in the home series. The "docile and lifeless" motera track exposed Indias much vaunted spin attack and also showed that the black caps cannot be underestimated. However, it is not going to be all that easy for the Indians here if one goes by the history of the wicket here and the pitch played true to nature, the hosts may be in for trouble. India do not have very happy memories of this wicket so far as New Zealand is concerned. Last time, India played New Zealand here in 1999, they were bundled out for paltry 83 in their first essay. However, the Indians struck back hard and in the second innings, rode on centuries by Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid to post a 500-plus total, leaving the Kiwis a tricky full last day to play out, which they did despite the best efforts of Srinath, who had picked up six wickets in the first innings, Kumble and Sunil Joshi. Almost four years later, the Kiwis are out to better their performance of last time. Dravid, making his debut as captain knows that this was his chance to get back at Stephen Flemings side that humiliated the Indians at home ahead of the World Cup. Thanks to a dead track at Motera and some doughty batting by Nathan Astle and Daniel Vettori in the first innings and Astle and Craig McMillan in the second, New Zealand salvaged a draw and have kept their chances open in the series. So the pressure is on the hosts. It will be all the more because normal pitch conditions were certain to surface after some hints of early life. The only Test victory India has scored in Mohali has been over Nasser Hussains England team. The victory, too, came after India grabbed the advantage of winning the toss and used all the early life. There is not going to be any changes in the bowling department as Dravid hinted at the press conference saying, we have two good pacers and two world class spinners. "I don t think we lack depth in bowling." Dravid is a shrewd reader of the game. The in-form Karnataka batsman was candid enough to say that New Zealand was a good side and "we will have to fight it out to win the Test." Dravid has been the mainstay of Indian batting in recent times. And it seems, he would have to mix his batting form and captain instinct to see India through in this Test. The Kiwis have never won the series against the hosts in India. But after having the measure of Indian spinners in the first Test, they have grown in confidence and now fancy a win. Though the visitors were not been able to take ten wickets in an innings in the first Test or against the Boards Presidents XI but their batsmen have shown lot of grit and determination. They came here as underdogs but now are battling their fancied rivals on equal terms. Stephen Fleming was supremely confident when he said that absence of Sourav Ganguly would have no bearing on his team. "We have our own game plans and individual dont matter," he added which showed how much confidence he has gained since his arrival in India. Lot is at stake for Dravid while Fleming has started visualising a series win. Who will have the last laugh, only time will tell. (UNI) |

SYDNEY, Oct 15: Injured batsman Darren Lehmann was overlooked while speedster Jason Gillespie included subject to a fitness Test in the 14-member squad announced today for the cricket triseries beginning in India on October 23. The fitness of Gillespie, who suffered an injury during a Test against Zimbabwe recently, would be assessed before the teams departure on October 22. If the fast bowler fails to pass the fitness Test, his place would go to brad Williams, national selection panel chairperson Trevor Hohns said. Despite this, we feel that we have the depth necessary to get us through the tournament," Hohns said. The others who were picked in the squad after having missed some of Australias recent assignments include Nathan Bracken, Michael Clarke and Jimmy Maher. The tour will see Australia play a total of six matches against India and New Zealand with the possibility of a final in Kolkata on November 18.
