Kiwis coach sounds warning to India MOHALI, Oct 14: Having managed to draw the first test in Ahmedabad, New Zealand coach Ashley Ross today sounded a warning to India ahead of the second and final cricket test, saying his team had the ability succeed on any condition. "I am pleased with the players and their ability to adapt to different conditions. We are fully prepared for the challenge ahead," Ross told reporters here. Ross said his team managed to negotiate the Indian spinners quite well in Ahmedabad which should serve as a confidence-booster when they take the field in the series decider beginning October 16. "It is great for the New Zealand players to face such great spinners in Indian conditions. Facing them is a great challenge," he said. Ross, however, said the outcome in Ahmedabad should leave no room for complacency as there was still many areas which needed improvement. "There is still a lot of areas where we can improve. With every match you have to improve. What is important is to adapt to a given set of conditions," he said. Asked whether New Zealand thought of going for the victory target of 370 runs at any stage of their second innings, Ross said "we were playing for a win throughout." "But given the conditions on last day and with some quick wickets falling, we settled for a draw. "It wasnt a win, but it wasnt a loss either," he said. Asked whether New Zealand were contemplating making any changes to the team for the Mohali test, Ross indicated that the team management could opt for a different eleven considering the conditions here. "There is every chance that we may choose a different eleven for this test match. We will decide later," he said. On the Mohali track, ross said "we have played here four years back and we are mindful of its reputation. We are excited by the challenge. Its an interesting wicket." "I have seen the wicket yesterday and today. There are some cracks", he said. Asked how much emphasis was given by the team on planning in advance, Ross said "we plan well in advance. It helps us enormously. We prepare for all the eventualities. We work hard to be successful in unfamiliar environment". Ross also had a bit of advice for Indias pitch authorities saying that such slow tracks would not help the Indian team when they play outside the country. "To play well in Australia or New Zealand, you need to have the experience of playing on fast wickets." On why Nathan Astle was being asked to play the test match when he was not fit for the triangular series due to a knee injury, ross said the medical panel felt that it was unlikely that he would aggravate the injury further by playing in the test. Slow
and dead pitch responsible for draw NEW DELHI, Oct 14: Nothwithstanding master blaster Sachin Tendulkars failure at the first test match at Ahmedabad, captain Sourav Ganguly said there was no need to debate on whether he was still the best batsman in the world. "Sachin Tendulkar is the best batsman in the world and there is no doubt about it. Anyone surpassing a world record does not make him the best in the world," Ganguly told UNI here today before he left for the second test at Mohali starting from Saturday. With an obvious reference to Mathew Haydens world record innings of 380 runs against Zimbabwe at Melbourne, Ganguly said Tendulkar never played for records and no one had the class and consistency in international cricket like the little master. Tendulkar had scored eight and seven runs in the first test match which ended in a tame draw on Sunday. Incidentally, Australian captain Steve Waugh has called yesterday Hayden the best batsman in the world at current form. Moreover, there was much debate in the English media about Sachins role as a match winner. Captain courageous wondered why there was any doubt or debate about who was the best. "Tendulkar is much ahead of the rest of the players. The way he dominates the ball, the range of shots, the solid defence, the match winning innings... There is class in everything he does," he pointed out. He was confident that Tendulkar would register a big score at the Mohali test as he always bounced back strongly if he had some indifferent innings to start with. "We are in for a run feat from Tendulkar. Just wait and watch," he added. Ganguly said it was strange that players, who have just started their career and have not reached even the half the runs the master blaster had scored, were being compared with Tendulkar. Talking a dig at the British and Australian media, Ganguly said every achievement of their players becomes "historic" and they lavish praises on very ordinary players. "We have in our team the two best test batsman in the world in Tendulkar and vice-captain Rahul Dravid," he added. When asked whether he was disappointed in not winning the Ahmedabad test, the captain said the Indian team dominated the entire match but could not pull out a victory due to a very "slow and dead" pitch which neither offered bounce nor spin. Ganguly said he expected a much better pitch at Mohali which would have both bounce and spin to win a match. Asked about the final playing XI, Ganguly said that would be decided after inspecting the pitch. On whether Agarakar could be played in the match, he said the team management would take a decision on whether to play with two or three seamers. As many as seven cricketers, including the captain, vice-captain Dravid, Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan had a two-hour meeting with the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI0 on players contract issue. Both parties termed the meeting as "successful" and were hopeful of reaching a contract shortly. While BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya said only modalities remained as all the differences were sorted out and only paper work remained, captain ganguly said he was "happy" with the outcome of the meeting.
