Three new faces in Indian team

RAJKOT, Oct 4: Akash Chopra, the young Delhi opening batsman broke into the Indian Test squad for the first test against New Zealand to be played at Ahmedabad riding on a century and a half-century in the two warm up matches against the visitors.

Yuvraj Singh, who has already cemented his place in the one-day squad, Aviskar Salvi and L Balaji, who have already played for India in the one-dayers, are the other new players to get a berth into the Test squad.

Announcing the team during the three-day match between India‘A’ and New Zealand at the RMC ground here today, the BCCI secretary S K Nair said that this team has been chosen only for the first Test.

Making a comeback into the Indian squad was Mumbai leg spinner S Bahutule, while S Bangar is the unlucky one to miss out a place in the squad.

S Ramesh who scored a fine century yesterday in the ongoing match also missed out with the selectors preferring Akash Chopra instead.

Ajit Agarkar, who did not have a very good Irani Trophy match also failed to get a place, while Ashish Nehra was ruled out, thus opening the door for the two young pacemen Salvi and Balaji to share the new ball with Zaheer Khan.

Team:S Ganguly (c), R Dravid (vc), V Sehwag, A Chopra, S Tendulkar, V V S Laxman, P Patel, S Bahutule, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, A Salvi and L Balaji. (UNI)

Pak and SAfrica to play in Sharjah event

LAHORE, Oct 4: Pakistan and South Africa have confirmed their participation in a Triangular one-day Tournament in Sharjah next year, event organisers said today.

"We are trying to sign on a third team. We have negotiated with Australia also," Zahid Noorani, chief executive of organisers the cricketers benefit fund series, told.

"It has been difficult to secure confirmations from teams because of the packed international schedule," Noorani said.

"But we don’t want to drop our tradition of hosting at least one tournament annually in Sharjah. With two very good sides confirmed, we are now looking at a third team," he added. (AGENCIES)

Wishart, Streak put Zimbabwe in control of tour match

MELBOURNE, Oct 4: Craig Wishart struck a century before captain Heath Streak grabbed three wickets to put Zimbabwe in control of their three-day tour match against Western Australia today.

Wishart top-scored with 100 as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 330 in their first innings, and Streak then took three for 35 to reduce the hosts to 207 for six by the close of the second day at the WACA ground.

Zimbabwe had resumed on 254 for seven and Wishart, 93 not out overnight, reached three figures with 18 fours and a six before he was bowled by Paul Wilson in the fourth over of the morning.

However tailenders Streak, with 45, and Andy Blignaut, who hit eight fours and two sixes in a 78-ball 57, helped the Africans put on 156 for the last three wickets.

Wilson, who trapped Streak Leg Before Wicket as the batsman padded up, finished with figures of four for 41 in 30 overs.

Streak then struck early to remove Mike Hussey, Chris Rogers and Shaun Marsh with just 68 runs on the board before Marcus North (59) and Scott Meuleman (47) revived Western Australia with a fourth-wicket stand of 88.

Having reached 156 for three, the locals then lost a further three wickets for 12 runs, including that of Meuleman who did not ground his bat and was run out by a direct hit by Streak from mid-wicket.

Infighting in Skating is as old as Association

By Sanjeev Sharma

Infighting, groupism and the war for supremacy in the Amateur Roller Skating Association of Jammu and Kashmir is as old as the Association itself. Favouritism too remained there with those teaching the new comers the art of moving on wheels pay more attention to the wards of higher officials and the top businessmen, thus denying a chance to those from the average class to excel in the game.

Starling disclosures were made by none else but one of the top Artistic and Figure skater of 80s, Sunila Sharma, who too is a victim of ‘mess and favouritism’ in the skating association.

"I was one of the founder members of skating in Jammu and Kashmir in 1978. I, alongwith 15 more girls were there to practice all the events of skating, except Hockey. With my dedication and love for the game I became the state champion within a year in 1980 and continued at the top position upto 1983," disclosed Sunila.

Narrating the sorry tale of affairs in state skating, she said, "Failing to get the attention of those providing coaching at the State Sports Council skating rink, I often used to watch and learn from artistic and figure skaters from Gujarat during the national level meets".

The worst affected of the in-fighting and groupism, according to Sunila Sharma are the players who are being sandwiched between two groups—one claims to be representative at State level and other at the National.

"Today’s skater and parents are a divided and a confused lot over to whom they should support. If a skater wants to participate in state meet he is denied participation at national level and once he shifts to the body ensuring participation at the National level, he/she cannot be there in the state level competitions’’.

When asked why she did not encourage her daughter in skating, she said, "I have no time to accompany her to the rink at M A Stadium, because without my presence there she cannot learn. The reason— parents sitting along the rink influenced the coach for special attention to their child and those who don’t have time to sit over there, their wards will not be able to get the attention of instructor, whosoever he may be’’.

Real skating disappeared: Today’s skater, both boys and girls, practice only races and hockey, the reason being they want to earn more with less hardwork. In team events there is scope of winning medals, while on the other side individual events require a lot of hardwork and devotion, so both teacher and the student prefer not to touch them. I must say that the real and graceful skating of Artistic and Figure has disappeared.

Suggestions: Since I left the game in 1985-86 and preferred to keep myself away from the dirty politics afterwards, I’m of the opinion that there should be a neutral person at MA Stadium coaching centre, which, otherwise, is occupied by one of the two group of divided association. Furthermore, real events of Pair Skating, Artistic and Figure Skating need to be revived for making skating a complete game.

All praise for Khurmi: Sunila Sharma has all praise for GS Khurmi, who she said has created international standard infrastructure for the state skaters on his own. Such people are real boosters of the game. Being party to the present dispute in skating association, he (Khurmi) preferred to keep himself away. I must say that he has done something practical for the state skaters.

Solution to the crisis in Association: Being a skater, I must say that both the bodies must be dissolved and fresh election be held under the supervision of the State Sports Council. There should be active involvement of the real promoters and those with highest achievements in the game by establishing a true democratic set-up within the affiliated clubs.

From a skater to announcer, translator: Sunila, who devoted her five important years to skating, got nothing in return. However, she has earned a lot as an artist. After completing her M.Com, DBM and M.Phil from the University of Jammu, she joined the Directorate of Economics and Statistics Planning where she serves as Statistical Officer. A childhood artist, she is a senior casual news-reader and working as translator with All India Radio and Doordarshan. Sharing something special, she said, "the unforgettable moment for me was when I compared the same programme for Radio in which I used to participate as a child. I have a childhood association with Radio where I’ve acted in many serials as a child artist.

Miandad responds angrily to Sohail’s criticism

LAHORE, (Pak), Oct 4: Pakistan’s cricket coach Javed Miandad, who has come under fire from chief selector Aamer Sohail, has asked for a meeting with the national board chairman.

Miandad said he had requested a meeting with the Pakistani board chairman Tauqir Zia on Saturday to discuss "pressing issues".

After Pakistan’s eight-run win over South Africa in the first one-day international, Miandad responded angrily today to criticism from Sohail.

Sohail had said on Thursday that it would not be difficult for Pakistan to beat a weaker South Africa team provided the players were handled properly.

"I think that more concentration and professionalism is required to exploit the abilities and skills of the players," Sohail was quoted as saying by the official APP news agency in an apparent dig at Miandad.

Sohail and Miandad worked together as captain and coach in 1998 but fell out in a highly publicised row after defeats at home to Australia and Zimbabwe. Miandad told today: "If anyone thinks he can do a better job than me as coach he is welcome to come and give it a try.

"I don’t need any advice from anyone. What I have done with the team is visible to everyone. I am committed and trying hard."

"I think everyone knows what I have delivered since the World Cup."

Miandad was brought in as coach after Pakistan failed to qualify for the second round of the World Cup earlier this year. Sohail was also appointed chief selector and promptly dropped senior players Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Saeed Anwar and Inzamam-ul-Haq from the squad.

Since than Inzamam has returned as captain and Pakistan, with a blend of new and experienced players, have done reasonably well in three one-day tournaments. Before South Africa’s arrival they whitewashed Bangladesh 3-0 and 5-0 in the Tests and one-day series at home.

"I am satisfied with what we have achieved in the last six months," Miandad said. "We have found two or three good players for the future and they are improving. The team is now playing like a proper team." (AGENCIES)
