Ramesh helps India ‘A’ forge a strong reply

RAJKOT, Oct 3: A superb century by S Ramesh (110) and his 164 run first wicket partnership with Akash Chopra (66) helped India ‘A’ give a strong reply to New Zealand’s first innings score of 375 for seven declared on the second day of the three day match here today.

At close of play India ‘A’ were 216 for 5 with Badani on 7 and Kartik on 4 at the crease.

S Ramesh, knowing that a good performance here would help him regain his Test place with the selectors present here to choose the Indian squad for the first Test at Ahmedabad tomorrow, did not disappoint treating the pace and spin attack with equal disdain.

He stroked the ball on both sides of the wicket fluently. His cover drives on the off-side were a treat to watch. The south pad’s innings was however not blemishless as Scott Styris dropped him twice on 84 and 6 off Vettori at first slip.

Ramesh reached his 100 with a push to mid-wicket which came in 190 and 18 boundaries in it.

Ramesh who survived another life at 108, was however finally given out for 110 caught by Fleming off Tuffy he, however, was not happy with the decision. The replays showed that the ball had come of his shoulder.

Akash Chopra, the other opener also looking to impress the selectors did his chances no harm making 66 before falling into the trap set for him trying to Hook Oram. But the ball landed safely into the hands of wiseman fielding at deep fine leg.

Chopra had a nervous start taking 25 balls to open the account, but the Delhi opener who cracked a century in the first match against the Kiwis, flowered, steering the ball to the third man boundary with regularity. He also hit some glorious cover drives which scorched the turf.

Chopra however was extremely lucky. When on nine the umpire negated a strong LBW appeal by the bowler Tuffy. The replays showed that he was plumb infront. The next ball wicketkeeper Hart could not hold on to an inside edge and the ball raced to the boundary.

The New Zealanders however sorted Chopra eventually as oram went round the wicket and bowled into the ribs of Chopra which finally led to his downfall when he tried to hook a short pitched ball, but managed to hook straight into the hands of wiseman at fine leg.

The other batsmen however disappointed, Kaif being the major one.

Kaif who had cemented his place in the Indian one day squad was looking at a good performance here to impress the selectors for a Test place.

He, however could make just 4 before edging styris to the keeper hart.

For the Kiwis, left arm spinner Daniel Vettori was the most impressive bowler beating the batsmen in the air with his flight and the subtle change in pace. He was also the unluckiest as three catches were grassed off his bowling.

Earlier New Zealanders skipper Stephen Fleming declared their first innings on 375 for seven as soon as Jacob Oram completed a well deserved century. (UNI)

I have done my job: Ramesh

RAJKOT: Sadagopan Ramesh answered more than one question with his stroke-filled century in the three-day cricket tour match between India ‘A’ and New Zealand at the Corporation grounds here today.

Critics have held his foot work, or the lack of it, against his inclusion in the Indian team but the Tamil Nadu left-hander showed today he has the wherewithal to succeed at the highest level.

"It is difficult for a player to get a hundred if he does not have a good footwork," said Ramesh who made 110 in India `A’s first innings against the visitors.

"For past couple of years, I have tightened my game a little more and I desperately wanted to get to the three-figure mark in this match and I am happy I have done it.

"I have done this before at the highest level and given a chance i would do it again," said Ramesh, who has scored 1367 runs from 19 Tests runs so far.

Ramesh, who played his last Test for India in Sri Lanka in 2001, hit two well-timed half-centuries, in the semifinal and the final of the Ranji Trophy, and continued his form into the new season when he scored a triple hundred in the local league in Chennai.

"I think I have done my job, now it is for the selectors to decide whether I can be in the Indian team or not," said Ramesh in his typically withdrawn style. (PTI)

Hockey finds itself right under the spotlight

By Rahul Dravid

It’s been an eventful week for Indian hockey, losing to Pakistan in the group stages but then coming back to beat them a few days later to win the Asia Cup. It was a fantastic performance and great to watch. I watched a hockey match after a long time and it was great to see how the Indians soaked the initial pressure and then wore down the Pakistanis towards the end.

With its recent success and the growth of the media hockey finds itself right under the spotlight .The profile of the game has probably never been bigger. While a higher profile is fantastic for any sport there are certain challenges that come with it .The pressure both on and off the field increases and learning to cope with it is a skill that has to be learnt.

Indian hockey for long has always complained that it hasn’t received its due share of recognition and media coverage but today it finds itself in a position from which they can raise the profile of both the players and the game and inspire and enthuse young kids to play the game.

A sport needs heroes that young kids can look up to and be inspired and enthused by. Growing up I always wanted to become like a Gavaskar, Vishwanath or a Kapil Dev.I knew all their statistics and read every little information you could find on them. While there wasn’t much television coverage, there were magazines and newspapers from which my friends and me would soak in all the details about our stars. Even though we hadn’t even seen them from closer than hundred yards we felt we knew them and we felt happy when they succeeded and sad when they failed. A sport needs to create that kind of passion amongst young kids and only if kids actually identify with the players will they feel that strong bond to the players and the sport. The players are what people come to watch.

Most young kids today can rattle off the playing and personal details of a Tendulkar, Harbajan or even Partiv Patel but how many would know about a Ignace Tirkey or Sandeep Michael .We would all like to know how Sandeep feels about being the best young player in the tourney or what is going through Devesh Chauhan’s mind when he has to defend his goal from one of those lethal drag flicks. Sadly, though I have hardly heard much from them. I’m sure a lot of them are interesting people and characters and their stories would inspire young kids not only in hockey but other sports as well. Banning the players from interacting with the media doesn’t help.

I agree that there can be a huge amount of pressure from the demands of the media today. With the increase in Television channels, newspapers and websites

its impossible to be able to meet the demands of all concerned and it can be a chore at the end of a tough day when you have to answer loads of questions, but a certain amount of accessibility is a must and critical for the growth of any sport and all involved in it must take responsibility for the continued success of the sport. Hockey, must decide that if it wants to share the spotlight with cricket then it must also be willing to face the consequences of that attention and scrutiny. Believe me, its not always roses on this side of the fence there are thorns that come with it as well, but I know that I’d rather be in this position than in any other.

Hopefully, the series against the Kiwis will be well supported and it promises to be a cracker. Stephen Fleming and his team have shown with recent performances that they are one of the best travelers in world cricket and though they will miss Bond and Cairns we will have to put up our best foot forward if we want win the series. Pillay, six others to miss Afro-Asian Games

NEW DELHI, Oct 3: Captain Dhanraj Pillay was today "rested" alongwith six other members of the title-winning Asia Cup squad as the Indian Hockey Federation announced 24 probables for the inaugural Afro-Asian Games starting in Hyderabad on October 24.

The others, who did duty for India in Asia Cup but were omitted from the Afro-Asian Games probables list include veteran forward Baljit Singh Dhillon, Baljit Singh Saini, Dinesh Nayak, Tejbir Singh, Didar Singh and goalkeeper Kamaldeep Singh. However, Dhanraj and the other six players have been included in the 31-member probables for the upcoming home Test series against Netherlands and the Azlan Shah Tournament in Malaysia early next year, IHF secretary general K Jothikumaran said in a press release.

Though an official reason was not given for Dhanraj’s omission, a source in the IHF said the striker was being "rested" in view of the other major engagements ahead.

Dhanraj later told PTI he welcomed the decision as it would provide younger players an opportunity to showcase their skills at the highest level. "We have been playing (quite a lot) for the last 7-8 months. I think it is a right decision to give rest to the seniors," he said. (UNI)

Waugh drops retirement hint with India in mind

MELBOURNE, Oct 3: Australia Test captain Steve Waugh, the sport’s most-capped player, has hinted he will retire in the next 12 months after a final attempt at winning a series in India.

"You always want to go out on a good note," the 38-year-old Waugh told reporters in Perth.

"I’m not exactly sure when it’s going to be, but it’s a good chance that this will be the last time I play in perth."

Waugh will lead Test cricket’s top-ranked side in a two-match series against Zimbabwe starting in Perth on October 9, followed by the second Test in Sydney on October 17-21.

Australia will also host a four-Test series against India in December and January in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.

India will host Australia in September next year as Waugh tries to claim an Australia series victory there for the first time since Bill Lawry’s team won 3-1 in 1969-70.

A defiant Waugh has hit four centuries in his past seven Tests including his remarkable hundred in the fifth Ashes Test against England in Sydney.

Unwanted by national selectors for the World Cup, Waugh’s Test future was also the subject of much public debate before the fifth Test.

Waugh crashed a boundary through cover from the final ball of the second day’s play, equalling Don Bradman’s national record of 29 Test hundreds.

Waugh has scored 32 centuries, two behind the world mark of India’s Sunil Gavaskar.

The Australian’s record of 10,521 runs at an average of 51.07 in 162 Tests is second only to his former Test captain Allan Border’s 11,174 runs in 156 matches. (AGENCIES)
