Richardson slams impressive ton, Patel
shines with the ball

RAJKOT, Oct 2: New Zealand opening batsman Mark Richardson slammed an impressive 128 not out as the visitors posted a healthy 299 for five on the opening day of the three-day cricket match against India ‘A’ at the corporations ground here today.

The opening day also saw rookie speedster Munaf Patel grabbing the limelight with his three-wicket haul for 64 runs in ths biggest match so far of his fledgling career.

This was Patel’s debut match in the first class cricket though he is yet to play in a Ranji Trophy game.

The Kiwi opener, who was a picture of confidence today, had two good partnerships after the visitors were reduced to 91 for four off 35 overs at one stage.

He first added 89 runs for the fifth wicket with Craig McMillan (30 off 74 balls) before the latter was caught by Akash Chopra in the slips off the other paceman Sreesanth, who too bowled very well.

The 200 for the visitors came off 273 minutes off 66.2 overs while Richardson reached the three figure mark off 223 balls in 291 minutes when he stylishly cover drove left arm spinner Murali Kartik for a four.

He added another 119 runs for the unbroken sixth wicket with Jacob Oram (59 off 82 balls with two sixes and six fours) off 202 balls to put his team in a good position at stumps.

Richardson, who played a waiting game before accelarating in the final session, has so far faced 304 balls during his 381 minute stay at the wicket. His knock includes 18 fours and a six.

India ‘A’ captain Mohammaed Kaif’s move to take the second new ball after 80 overs with the score reading 256 for five did not make any impact on the two batsmen especially after Sreesanth left the field with a pulled muscle.

The visitors, who were coasting at 61 for one at lunch, lost three quick wickets soon after resumption to be in a spot at tea.

Skipper Stephen Fleming was the first to go when he played on to his wickets off a Patel Inswinger. Patel took three wickets conceding 17 runs in his third spell of five overs.

Fleming, who scored a quickfire 27 off 34 balls hitting four well-timed boundaries and a six off left arm spinner Murali Kartik. He added 47 runs for the second wicket with Richardson before being dismissed.

New man Scott Styris hit Kartik for a six and looked in fine touch. He, however, went for his shots too early and snicked an easy catch to wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta off Patel for eight. He faced 16 balls hitting just one six in his 16-minute stay at the wicket.

Though much was expected from Nathan Astle, the stylish middle order batsman disappointed by lasting just one ball before being leg before wicket playing half cock to a good length delivery from Patel for no score.

New Zealand reached the 100-run mark off 38.4 overs with Richardson batting on 42 and Craig McMillan on two.

8-year-old Grover takes honour on opening
day of Chess Tournament

NEW DELHI, Oct 2: Eight-year-old Sahaj Grover took the honours on the opening day of the Parsvnath International Chess Tournament here defeating an opponent rated more than 400 points above him.

The opening round of the Rs three lakh prize money tournament was otherwise a smooth sailing for the top players as they collected full point from their respective encounters.

But the handful of chess lovers gathered at the Bapu Samaj Kendra here were treated to a "clinical" game by grover (ELO 1924) when he outplayed B S Shivanandan (ELO 2371) in 63 moves.

Grover, who opted for French defence opening, kept his composure for over three and a half hours as his experienced opponent tried to frustate him by playing for time after the child gained an upper hand in the middle game.

Shivanandan looked like salvaging a draw for a while when he forced grover to spend about half an hour on a move at the fag end but the eight-year-old not only overcame the trap but showed a great understanding of the game to come out triumphant after 63 moves.

In other matches, top seed Dimitry Svetushkin of Moldova, youngest commonwealth champion P Harikrishna, British Open champion Abhijeet Kunte, GM Koneru Humpy, Scotland’s Jonathan Rowson and IM R B Ramesh won their games fairly easily.

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by president of All India Council of Sports Vijay Kumar Malhotra and Member of Parliament Maneka Gandhi.

Baig suggests special sports policy with adequate funds
Bangalore lifts All India Invitation Football tournament

Excelsior Correspondent

SRINAGAR, Oct 2 : Stressing the need for devising a comprehensive sports policy with proper allocation of funds, the Minister for Finance and Planning, Mr Muzaffar Hussain Baig today said lack of a clear policy on sports has discouraged emergence of quality sports activity in the State.

Speaking at the prize distribution ceremony of the All India Kashmir Invitation Cup Football Tournament, which concluded here today, the Minister said the first and the foremost thing vital for promotion sports activity in the State, is the necessity of making available quality sports infrastructure including stadia and equipment. "At present, unfortunately, there is no government policy on sports," he said adding this is the main hurdle in the growth of sports in the State. Besides, he said the sportspersons should be given proper nutrition and provided proper health care facilities to groom them as healthy sportspersons. ‘The government can provide you the infrastructure, but you have to develop the sports spirit’, he told the sportspersons present on the occasion.

Mr. Baig said the government have already initiated certain measures to encourage sports activity in the state and as a part of this programme several stadia are being developed in various parts of the state. On the instructions of the Chief Minister, he said a plan has been formulated for developing a part of the Id-Gah ground in downtown Srinagar as a sports stadium. He also offered land to the police department for developing and maintaining a sports stadium.

Felicitating the organizers and the teams which participated in the tournament, organized after a gap of 14 years, the Minister said that due to the turmoil, like all other activities, the sports also got badly affected and almost negligent sports activity was visible in the state during the past more than one decade. However, he said the initiative taken by J&K Football Association by organizing such a tournament in the valley would go a long way in promoting sports activity in the violence-hit state. ‘Of course, there is violence around us, but on the other hand the life is also going on’, he said adding that such events prove a catharsis for the people.

Responding to the demands raised by the organizers of the tournament, the Minister announced 20 per cent increase in the annual grants provided for organizing such events. He said the departmental teams should be reviewed and all the departments having such teams should adopt them. He also suggested reservation in jobs for outstanding sportspersons and said the government would henceforth contribute towards organizing the tournament on annual basis.

The All India Kashmir Invitation Cup Football tournament was lifted by Banglore team defeating Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala Team by a maiden goal. 17 teams participated in the tournament including five from outside the state. The final match of the tournament was witnessed by around 6000 people. The Minister of State for Education Mr. A. R. Veeri, Minister of State for Industries and Commerce Mr. Raman Mattoo, senior police officers and office bearers of Jammu and Kashmir Football Association were present on the occasion.

Ganguly, Boycott, Shastri add cricketing
glamour in Durga Puja

KOLKATA, Oct 2: Adding a dash of cricketing glamour to the Durga Puja festivities, Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly and former stars of the game Geoff Boycott and Ravi Shastri today graced a Puja Pandal in the metropolis turning up in traditional Bengali attires.

The trio, attending a recording of ESPN’s programme ‘Cricket Show’ with an ostentatious Durga Puja Pandal as its backdrop, had an informal chat with compere Harsha Bhogle on the ongoing India-New Zealand series and the problem of sledging, before obliging fans with a public appearance and loads of autographs.

Sporting a blue check kurta and a traditional red Tilak on his forehead, boycott, the former England opener and a legend of the geltleman’s game, looked every bit a ‘Bhadralok’, the Bengali version of a typical gentleman.

For the hundreds of Puja revellers who spent over two hours to catch a glimpse of the stars, the appearance was much a surprise as the morning showers, which many of them braved to be anywhere near the Barisha players’ corner Pandal, a stone’s throw away from Ganguly’s Behala residence in the south-western outskirts of the city.

Barricaded on both sides, the ‘Pandal of the day’ on Biren Roy Road saw the stars poised in front of the camera while the priests chanted hymns to invoke the Goddess and the smell of incesnse sticks wafted in background.

But as is inevitable in any celebrity outing, the tailpiece was police high-handedness on journalists invited to cover the function and the regular jostling, pushing and shoving of over-enthusiastic fans trying to jump the cordon. (PTI)
