Australia will miss McGrath, Warney, says Ganguly BRISBANE, Nov 28: Indian captain Sourav Ganguly today sought to put the mighty Australians on the backfoot ahead of the four-match Test series, saying the hosts will miss the services of Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne who make a "huge difference" to the team. "Mcgrath and Warney will be missed, no doubt about it. When they didnt play against England two years ago, Australia suffered in Sydney. They make a huge difference because they pick most wickets or have picked most wickets for their country in the last eight or ten years," Ganguly said. "It is like when teams come to India, they find Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh missing from our line-up. They would be missed but then injury, especially in the case of fast bowlers, is part and parcel of modern cricket," Ganguly said on the eve of their three-day match against Queensland. Fast bowler McGrath, nursing an ankle injury, has ruled himself out of the first two Tests while spin wizard Shane Warne is serving a years ban for testing positive for a banned drug just before the World Cup in South Africa earlier this year. Ganguly, hoping to beat the Australians on their soil, however, said the home sides back-up bowling has enough firepower to test the best line-up in the world. "They have a good back-up strength and it will still be a very good attack for the test," Ganguly said referring to the likes of Jason Gillespie, Andy Bichel, Nathan Bracken and Brad Williams, who are part of the 12-member squad announced for the first Test. Ganguly also wondered if Australia would go into the first Test with four fast bowlers, leaving out Stuart MacGill, the leg-spinner, from the playing eleven. "MacGill has picked up a lot of wickets in the last two series, even otherwise he has been very successful," he said. "But I really cant comment about their composition, only we have to be prepared to do our best." Bracken, fresh from a tremendously successful tour of India, has a bright chance of playing in the first Test but the Indian captain said it remained to be seen how the left-arm paceman would cope in Test cricket. "He bowled very well in India but Test is different. It would be good opportunity for him to learn cricket." The Gabba pitch, which traditionally favours pacers, could behave differently this time as Queensland is witnessing one of the worst droughts in modern times. When Gangulys attention was drawn to the fact, he said "one cant say about it. The groundsman could still water it and help it quicken. We would have to wait and find out." He also put to rest criticism from Victorian coach David Hookes who attacked Ganguly for not sticking to a pre-match verbal arrangement 70 overs each for two sides in two innings during the three-day tour opener at Melbourne that ended in a tame draw yesterday. " I dont know what he (hookes) meant by it. It was the beginning of our tour and we needed to get used to it," Ganguly said. "I told him it is easier for your side but our batters need enough time. We batted 90 overs (and then declared) and if they had done the same, we could still have had 45-45 overs for us in the second innings." India scored 266 for nine declared in 90 overs before Brad Hodge pounded the bowlers for his 264 as Victoria closed their innings at 518 for eight in 134 overs. On tomorrows three-day game against Queensland, which will be Indias last warm-up match before the start of the first Test, Ganguly said his players are keen to have some "good practice." "There was a lot of bounce at MCG (venue of tour opener) and our batsmen coped with it. As a professional unit you just have to get used to it as quickly as possible." (PTI) |
Develop killer instinct, Kapil tells students CHENNAI, Nov 27: It was Kapils day out at the Shankara Vidya Ashram Matriculation Higher Secondary School and at Chettinad Vidyashram today as the Wisden Indian cricketer of the century regaled the students at a glittering function. The legendry Indian cricketer advised them to develop killer instinct, a quality that was missing in the Indian team. "People have been telling for so many years that the Indian team lacks killer instinct. It can be developed only in schools", Kapil added at a function organised by the Sony Max to mark the countdown for the ICC under-19 cricket World Cup to be held at Bangladesh next year. Kapil Dev, who is the brand ambassador of Sony Max, said school cricket should be given more importance as basics could be imparted and the students could devote more time to learn better. The excited bunch of children were ecstatic at the once-in-a life time opportunity of meeting cricketing icon as there was never a dull moment during the nearly one-and-a-half hour interaction. Kapil played some cricket, imparted batting and bowling techniques and fielded questions from the students in his usual flamboyant style. During his 30-minute address, Kapil had the children shared his experiences right from the school days, while laying emphasis on importance of academics and sports in a students life. Kapil began his address by saying that Chennai was one place which would remain close to his heart as he had never failed in cricket and ended it by presenting an autographed bat to the school. Before alighting from the dais, Kapil urged the children to take a pledge to reach the level of signing autograph and not just seeking it. "Will you all take a pledge and keep up the promise," Kapil asked them. After a moments silence, he said then take a pledge you should give autographs...Not to seek one". Kapil said he was here to motivate the young children to achieve something big in their career. "If you want to become a successful person you should be more focused and believe in yourselves. There should be no negative thinking". "You should have a dream of becoming something big in life...And you should fulfill it at any cost. To achieve this it requires a lot of focus and dedication", Kapil said. Sony Max is taking Kapil Dev to several schools across 11 cities as part of its innovative concept "Kapils under-19" to create an awareness for the under-19 World Cup. (UNI) |
Indias
approach to tour-opener MELBOURNE, Nov 27: Indias approach to their drawn tour-opening match against state side Victoria was described here today as "staggering" by home team coach David Hookes. Hookes, a former Australian left-handed batsman, was angry the tourists breached an agreement he claimed was made before the start of the three-day match to give the game greater purpose. Hookes claimed Indian captain Sourav Ganguly had agreed to Hookes suggestion before the toss that the two sides bat 70 overs apiece per innings to try to achieve a result. But, Hookes said, once India won the toss, Ganguly came to him and said: "Its our first day on the tour we should just bat." Hookes said: "So once he went well past that (the agreed 70 overs) and his tailenders didnt bat properly, I thought `bugger it we were pretty annoyed. "They didnt learn to play cricket....It was a staggering approach. "They treated the game as a net session." Ganguly did not refer to the pre-match agreement Hookes claimed had been made, but defended his sides tactics only one week away from the opening Test of a four-match series against world champions Australia. "Thats what you get these days (three-day games) because the itinerary is so tight....Youve got to make the most of what you get," he said. The sole highlight on the final day was Victorian batsman Brad Hodges 264. Ganguly said: "Obviously Brad is trying to find a place in the Test side. "I believe they were playing a bit for him thats how it goes." Ganguly conceded his side were below-par in the match and hoped they would improve. Victoria responded to Indias decision to bat for 90 overs in the first innings by making the tourists field for more than nine hours when the home team had their turn at the batting crease. Victoria smacked a huge 518 for eight wickets declared as Hodge posted his record-setting score his second-highest in first-class ranks. It was also the highest individual score in Australia against India, beating Justin Langers 223 in the third Test at Sydney during the 1999-2000 season. In a final session lacking purpose, India reached 116-2 in their second innings before stumps. The tourists had made 266 for nine declared in the first knock. Hookes warned India against taking the same approach into another three-dayer from Saturday against a Queensland XI ahead of the Test in Brisbane. "You need that game of cricket leading into a test and they have not had a game of cricket theyve had an extended, glorified centre-wicket practice," he said. "If they treat the queensland game like a glorified centre-wicket game, then they are, `nowhere." The frustration of the two sides became evident today as the Indian spinners at times bowled to stacked leg-side fields. Victorian wicketkeeper Peter Roach bowled an over late in the day. "Hopefully this is the last three-day game thats ever played at the Melbourne cricket ground," Hookes said. Matches in the domestic sheffield shield competition are played over four days, while five days are allocated for Tests. (AFP) |
Go into first Test with 5 bowlers: Srinath NEW DELHI, Nov 27: Former Indian speedster Javagal Srinath, who recently decided to call it a day from international cricket, feels India would do well to go into their first Test match against Australia with five bowlers. Speaking as a panelist in an ESPN weekly programme, Srinath said the team combination was going to be vital against the mighty Aussies. "Go in with five bowlers.", he said. Refusing to buy the argument that a six batsmen would add to the batting depth, Srinath said, "if the five top batsmen cant do much, its highly improbable that the sixth would do anything for the team. Talking about batting, Srinath stressed on a good start to have any chance of success against the worlds leading test team. Advising the batsmen to show patience, he said, when you play in Australia, youve got to know how to leave the ball. When we play Australia, we lose wickets initially. Let us be 100 for no loss. We will definitely score runs then. (UNI) |
National Under-22
Athletic Championship BANGALORE, Nov 28: Jammu and Kashmirs Chetana Solanki and Andhra Pradeshs Iyaleen Samantha created new meet records in womens Pole-Vault and 200 metres to hog lime-light in the National Youth (under-22) Athletic Championship here today. Chetana cleared 3.40 metres to obliterate the three metre mark of Delhis Deepa Chaudhary set in Chandigarh in November last year. National record holder V S Surekha of Tamil Nadu picked up silver with a 3.30 metres effort at Sree Kanteerava Stadium. Deepa finished third (3.10 metres). Chetana actually came here as part of Gujarat contingent but the Western states athletes were barred from participating here as the association there is troubled by in-fighting between two factions. In a bid to see that athletes of Gujarat did not suffer, they were allowed to compete under J & K banner. Apparently hampered by right hand injury from which she is recovering, Surekha, who holds the national record at 3.51 metres, was below her best here. Iyaleen ran away with gold clocking 24.16 seconds in the 200 metres event, beating back the challenge of Keralas Deepthi Jose (24.69) and Dhanya Purusothaman (25.02). Iyaleen erased the 24.42 second mark of Kavita Pandya (Maharashtra) set at Visakhapatnam three years ago. Meet records tumbled in 4 x 100 metres relay in both mens and womens section. Karnataka quartet of B G Nagaraj, B S Shashidhar, Prabhuraj and Mohd. Muddassir timed 41.58 seconds to grab gold, rewriting the previous best effort of 42.57 put in by Kerala team in Thrissur in October 2001. Keralas foursome of Dhanya, Shini Rajan, Semi Sebistian and Deepti Jose bagged the top honours in the same event in the womens section with 47.88 seconds, setting aside their own states mark of 48.56 achieved in Chandigarh last year. In the mens 200 metres, Karnatakas Muddassir equalled the record of Punjabs Jaspreet Singhs set last year with 21.84 seconds. (PTI) |

By Rahul Dravid The final at Calcutta was a disappointing game to lose for all the guys in the side as we felt for a good portion of the game we were in control and should have been able to force a positive result. Unfortunately, in sport and especially finals theres little place for "should haves" and "what ifs" and credit to the Australians for holding their nerve and executing the basics better than us when it counted. They showed why they are the envy of the rest of the world and that we have some catching up to do with them .The positive side is that over the last couple of years at least in one day cricket we seem to be playing well enough to be in the next rung of the ladder and are getting into positions to win games from them and hopefully the more we play them the better well get. There are few occasions in sport like a final under lights at Eden Gardens to a packed house. It truly is a great place to play cricket. It was all in place except we couldnt provide the supporters the result they needed. Surely, some other day, going away on a long tour just a couple of days later meant there was little time to brood and mope over the loss but just the rush of getting everything in place before your away for 10 weeks. There always seems so much do in those last few hours before one takes off that it amazes me how we actually manage to get on the flight. Everyone is trying to get enough cricket kit to last the tour and making minor changes in equipment to meet the needs and demands of the tour- lighter bats are usually the requests for a tour like Australia. Batsmen can be very fussy about their bats and we are lucky that since the best bats are made in India we get some great bats. So, blaming your tools for a poor performance is out of the window. Its always a good idea to ensure that all the official clothing fits as I learnt to my horror at the World cup in 99 .In the last minute rush I had not checked to see if our official pant fitted me and thought nothing of it till a few hours before we were to meet the Queen at Buckingham Palace, when on trying the pant I was shocked to see that the length was a perfect fit for someone of Parthiv Patels height. After a frantic trip to oxford Street I managed to find a pant of the similar shade of grey and just made it back in time to avoid making a spectacle of myself. Im much wiser now. For those fussy about food some good ready-made mixes are a boon. There are only so many days you can eat cornflakes in the morning before a good old rava idli mix comes in handy. Never forget though to carry a cheerful disposition and a sense of humour because its going to be needed on the days away from family and friends.
