Sony to launch playstation 2 in China Dec 20

BEIJING, Nov 28: Sony corp said on Friday it will launch its popular playstation 2 video game console in China on Dec 20, as the Japanese electronics giant taps a market that is potentially vast but also plagued by pirated software.

The machine will sell for 1,988 yuan ( 240) in China, compared to 179 in the United States, the company said in a statement.

Sony has sold 62 million playstation 2 consoles worldwide, and is heading into the holiday season hoping to cut costs and squeeze more profits out of the market-leading machine.

Sony will sell the console in five Chinese cities to begin with — Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chengdu with more to follow.

It indicated that two games would be available at the launch for 168 yuan each. "In response to strong nationwide request for playstation 2 in China, Sony China is committed to develop a full-fledged playstation 2 business in the growing market," Sony China chairman Hiroshi Shoda said in a statement.

Sony’s chief competitors are microsoft corp, which makes the xbox console, and Japanese Rival Nintendo Co Ltd, which sells the gamecube machine. Both consoles have sold about 10 million units.

Though all the machines are sold in Chinese-speaking regions like Hong Kong and Taiwan, the console makers have shunned mainland China because of rampant counterfeiting that sees fake games sell for a dollar or two, compared to 50 in the United States.

Sony said major game developers such as Konami corp, Sega corp, Namco Ltd and Taito corp were working on Chinese versions of some games.

Playstation is crucial to Sony’s bottom line. Last year, the games division accounted for just 13 percent of sales, but nearly two-thirds of operating profits.

Sony said in July it hoped to sell 20 million playstation 2 units globally this year. In September, Nintendo said it would start selling a special console developed specifically for the Chinese market. To thwart piracy, that machine uses a flash memory card to which games can be downloaded in stores. (AGENCIES)

Govt banned free import of kerosene kept it in canalised list

NEW DELHI, Nov 28: To check the growing mis-usage of kerosene by the parallel market importers as well as mixing with diesel, the Government has banned free import of kerosene and canalised it through five public sector companies.

A notification to this effect has been issued by the DGFT, imposing certain restrictions on the imports.

Welcoming the decision, Petroleum Minister Ram Naik told UNI that that his ministry has demanded to impose restrictions imports on kerosene as it was being used as an adultrant in the diesel, whose consumption have been showing downfall in certain pockets specially in the coastal region.

He said that because of illegal usage of kerosene, the consumption in the first six months had shown a negative growth of 3.7 percent as against the positive growth of three percent in prevoius year.

The negative growth of diesel is seen as unusal because the demand should have been higher in the wake of good monsoon and increase in economic activities. (UNI)

Dock workers plan action against FoC vessels
at JNPT and Mumbai port

MUMBAI, Nov 28: The transport and dock workers’ union, in association with the Maritime Union of India (MUI) and the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), is planning a week-long action against the Flag of Convenience (FoC) vessels from December 1 to 5, dock workers’ Union Secretary R M Murthy said here.

The union is demanding that the Central Government enact a law to curb the plying of foC vessels in Indian waters in order to provide more employment opportunities to Indian sailors, he told UNI.

The action campaign will be against the vessels calling at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and the Mumbai Port Trust (MBPT).

Meanwhile, International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) regional chairperson (Asia-Pacific region) Manohar Kotwal gave a clarion call to all the affiliates of IFT in all the 12 major ports of India to join the campaign against the FoC vessels. He pointed out that Indian ports have become heaven for sub-standard ships voyaging with meagerly paid salsries to sailors.

"Seafarers of countries in the south Asian region would participate in the week-long campaign against substandard ships from countries shortlisted by ITF, London", Mr Kotwal added.

"The Indian tax structure unwittingly encourages the plying of foc vessels on the Indian shores. To attract forex several countries are offering tax sops and soft law regimes to ship owners. The vessels of Indian origin registered in the country are required to fork out 22 per cent of their profits as Income Tax to the Government and whereas FoC vessels plying on the same sea route and the same shore line have no tax liability", Mr Kotwal added.

The dock workers urged the Government to enact a law to curb the plying of FoC vessels on the Indian shores so as to give impetus to Indian shipping and the sailors employment potential.

Explaining the action plan here dock workers’ Union Secretaries P K Raman and Kirti Parek said that the campaign includes extensive tracking of FoC vessels for on-the-spot assessments for violation of ITF’s wage and safety standards. (UNI)

Carbon-based technology could bring
revolutionary change: Dhande

KANPUR, Nov 28: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, Director S G Dhande has called upon industrialists to use the indigenous carbon-based technology, which could bring revolutionary changes by cutting down costs.

Speaking at a national conference on carbon organised by the Indian Carbon Society at Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE) here yesterday, Prof Dhande said carbon technology was being used in various spheres including electronics, aerospace, pollution prevention and automobile.

He said the effluents released by industries, especially the leather units, could be treated by different types of carbon-oxygen surface structures.

He said elemental carbon could be tailored to act as a conductor, semi-conductor or insulator. New nano-carbon materials such as fullerene, nano-tubes and nano-wires may reduce the size of electronic devices drastically.

In his welcome address, DMSRDE Director, GN Mathur said the DMSRDE lab had developed Nuclear Biological Chemical (NBC) protective devices based on Active Carbon Spheres (ACS), which are able to provide protection and comfort better than any device available in the world. Besides, DMSRDE has developed fullerene derivatives useful in medical science, carbo graphite seals for aerospace application and nano materials such as multi walled and single walled nano tubes, carbon nanotubes and hellics. S Korea ind output up for 3rd month, tops forecasts

SEOUL, Nov 28: South Korea’s industrial output rose a provisional 2.4 percent in October from September, well ahead of forecasts, as strong exports fanned production, the Government said.

It was the third consecutive monthly rise in industrial output in Asia’s fourth-largest economy, which is widely regarded to have bottomed out after falling into recession in the first half and be staging a modest recovery.

The seasonally adjusted monthly reading outstripped a median forecast for a 0.8 percent rise in a survey of 10 economists conducted this week. Output had risen 2.9 percent in September.

Without taking into account seasonal factors, output rose 7.4 percent in October from a year ago, versus a revised 6.7 percent increase in September and a 13.8 percent rise in October, 2002, the National Statistical Office (NSO) said. (AGENCIES)
