Pak hockey team arrive through Wagah

WAGAH, Nov 27: A 15-member hockey team from Pakistan arrived India this afternoon to participate in the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hockey Tournament to be played in New Delhi.

The Star Hockey Club, Lahore, comprising 15 players and three officials, were accorded warm welcome at the Wagah joint border post. The team members included Pakistani World Cup star Suklain, Olympian Mohammad Asim and about half a dozen international players.

The team later proceeded to Delhi by train.

The team would return Pakistan on December 3 next month. (UNI)

Develop killer instinct, Kapil tells students

CHENNAI, Nov 27: It was Kapil’s day out at the Shankara Vidya Ashram Matriculation Higher Secondary School and at Chettinad Vidyashram today as the Wisden Indian cricketer of the century regaled the students at a glittering function.

The legendry Indian cricketer advised them to develop killer instinct, a quality that was missing in the Indian team. "People have been telling for so many years that the Indian team lacks killer instinct. It can be developed only in schools", Kapil added at a function organised by the Sony Max to mark the countdown for the ICC under-19 cricket World Cup to be held at Bangladesh next year.

Kapil Dev, who is the brand ambassador of Sony Max, said school cricket should be given more importance as basics could be imparted and the students could devote more time to learn better.

The excited bunch of children were ecstatic at the once-in-a life time opportunity of meeting cricketing icon as there was never a dull moment during the nearly one-and-a-half hour interaction. Kapil played some cricket, imparted batting and bowling techniques and fielded questions from the students in his usual flamboyant style.

During his 30-minute address, Kapil had the children shared his experiences right from the school days, while laying emphasis on importance of academics and sports in a student’s life.

Kapil began his address by saying that Chennai was one place which would remain close to his heart as he had never failed in cricket and ended it by presenting an autographed bat to the school.

Before alighting from the dais, Kapil urged the children to take a pledge to reach the level of signing autograph and not just seeking it.

"Will you all take a pledge and keep up the promise," Kapil asked them. After a moment’s silence, he said ‘then take a pledge you should give autographs...Not to seek one".

Kapil said he was here to motivate the young children to achieve something big in their career. "If you want to become a successful person you should be more focused and believe in yourselves. There should be no negative thinking".

"You should have a dream of becoming something big in life...And you should fulfill it at any cost. To achieve this it requires a lot of focus and dedication", Kapil said.

Sony Max is taking Kapil Dev to several schools across 11 cities as part of its innovative concept "Kapil’s under-19" to create an awareness for the under-19 World Cup. (UNI)

India’s approach to tour-opener
‘staggering’: Aussie coach

MELBOURNE, Nov 27: India’s approach to their drawn tour-opening match against state side Victoria was described here today as "staggering" by home team coach David Hookes.

Hookes, a former Australian left-handed batsman, was angry the tourists breached an agreement he claimed was made before the start of the three-day match to give the game greater purpose.

Hookes claimed Indian captain Sourav Ganguly had agreed to Hookes’ suggestion before the toss that the two sides bat 70 overs apiece per innings to try to achieve a result.

But, Hookes said, once India won the toss, Ganguly came to him and said: "It’s our first day on the tour — we should just bat."

Hookes said: "So once he went well past that (the agreed 70 overs) and his tailenders didn’t bat properly, I thought `bugger it’ — we were pretty annoyed.

"They didn’t learn to play cricket....It was a staggering approach. "They treated the game as a net session."

Ganguly did not refer to the pre-match agreement Hookes claimed had been made, but defended his side’s tactics only one week away from the opening Test of a four-match series against world champions Australia.

"That’s what you get these days (three-day games) because the itinerary is so tight....You’ve got to make the most of what you get," he said.

The sole highlight on the final day was Victorian batsman Brad Hodge’s 264.

Ganguly said: "Obviously Brad is trying to find a place in the Test side. "I believe they were playing a bit for him — that’s how it goes." Ganguly conceded his side were below-par in the match and hoped they would improve.

Victoria responded to India’s decision to bat for 90 overs in the first innings by making the tourists field for more than nine hours when the home team had their turn at the batting crease.

Victoria smacked a huge 518 for eight wickets declared as Hodge posted his record-setting score — his second-highest in first-class ranks.

It was also the highest individual score in Australia against India, beating Justin Langer’s 223 in the third Test at Sydney during the 1999-2000 season.

In a final session lacking purpose, India reached 116-2 in their second innings before stumps. The tourists had made 266 for nine declared in the first knock.

Hookes warned India against taking the same approach into another three-dayer from Saturday against a Queensland XI ahead of the Test in Brisbane.

"You need that game of cricket leading into a test and they have not had a game of cricket — they’ve had an extended, glorified centre-wicket practice," he said.

"If they treat the queensland game like a glorified centre-wicket game, then they are, `nowhere’."

The frustration of the two sides became evident today as the Indian spinners at times bowled to stacked leg-side fields. Victorian wicketkeeper Peter Roach bowled an over late in the day.

"Hopefully this is the last three-day game that’s ever played at the Melbourne cricket ground," Hookes said.

Matches in the domestic sheffield shield competition are played over four days, while five days are allocated for Tests. (AFP)

Go into first Test with 5 bowlers: Srinath

NEW DELHI, Nov 27: Former Indian speedster Javagal Srinath, who recently decided to call it a day from international cricket, feels India would do well to go into their first Test match against Australia with five bowlers.

Speaking as a panelist in an ESPN weekly programme, Srinath said the team combination was going to be vital against the mighty Aussies.

"Go in with five bowlers.", he said.

Refusing to buy the argument that a six batsmen would add to the batting depth, Srinath said, "if the five top batsmen can’t do much, it’s highly improbable that the sixth would do anything for the team.

Talking about batting, Srinath stressed on a good start to have any chance of success against the world’s leading test team.

Advising the batsmen to show patience, he said, when you play in Australia, you’ve got to know how to leave the ball. When we play Australia, we lose wickets initially. Let us be 100 for no loss. We will definitely score runs then. (UNI)

Royal Kashmir, Jindal Steel in semifinal of Polo Cup

NEW DELHI, Nov 27: Sameer Suhag slammed in seven goals as Indian Open champions Jindal Steel and Power crushed McDowells Signature team 10-4 to romp into the semifinals of the Rabo India Maharaja Hari Singh Polo Cup, here today.

In the other match, Oliver Taylor led from the front firing seven goals as defending champions Royal Kashmir Army rallied brilliantly to defeat Teachers 10-6 and booked a spot in the last-four stage. Royal Kashmir will meet South Delhi while Jindal clash with Zara in the semi-finals.

Such was the domination of Jindal that their opponents were just happy to keep the ball in possession even if it was for a brief while. It was in the fourth chukker that they registered their first goal but by then Jindal had taken a 9-0 decisive lead, thanks to brilliant horsemanship by Sameer who scored at will.

Apart from Sameer’s seven goals, Simran Shergill, G S Pandher and Vishal Singh scored a goal each for the winners. Manupal Godhara scored all the four goals for the losing side. In the other match, Teachers who had a one-goal advantage even before the starting whistle failed to capitalise as Royal Kashmir’s Juan Ambroggio made it quits with a goal in the very first minute.

Basheer Ali and Navin Khanna put Teachers back into lead with a goal apiece. However Oliver Taylor fired a superb goal as Royal Kashmir grabbed the lead in the third and after that the defending champions never looked back with Taylor scoring a brace in the last chukker. S K Yadav chipped in with a solitary goal while ambroggio scored another goal in the fifth chukker for the winners. (UNI)

Rollball—A new combination sports

By Dr Arun Arora

Necessity is the mother of invention. In today’s world, fierce competition has become the norm of the day. This has given impetus to invent new games which not only try the physical strength and endurance but also the competitive skill and expertise of the participants—in hitherto untried ways. New talents and unexplored qualities of the players come to fore because of the introduction of new forms of healthy competition.

Roller Skating is a very exciting and graceful activity. For years together, competition in speed roller skating have been held. Only recently a new dimension has been given to roller skating. Combination sports have been in vogue for long time e.g. water polo. Rollball is a combination sport. Although roller hockey, another combination sport, is being played for long time but roller hockey is a rough and injury-prone game. Rollball is an effort on the part of inventors to have a softer game where chances of injury are less. It is not difficult to understand the game of Rollball. It is combination of skill and activities involved in the games of basketball, throwball and handball but more importantly it is played on roller skates. It therefore goes without saying that players have to be masters in roller skating.

Equipment used for this sports is very simple. First of all players must wear roller skates without stoppers. It is absolutely essential to enable the players to move freely. Players can use either quads or inline skates. Safety helmets and knee pads are required to minimize injury. Ball is painted half blue and half red. During the game ball may be passed, dribbled, thrown or tapped in any direction but rule is that all the time both hands are used except single hand may be used only during tapping. Back pass is allowed in any direction. Playing surface is made of concrete, tar, mat or wooden but it should be anti-glare. Each team consists of ten players, six on the field and four in reserve. The main objective of the game is to score maximum goals within a stipulated time.

The game of Rollball is picking up very fast. Recently 2nd Nationals of Rollball were held at Pune where team from J&K, under the banner of Rollball Association of J&K, also participated and brought laurels. Players from the state were thrilled after participating in Nationals for the first time. An international tournament is also being hosted by India in December 2003 at New Delhi. For this a preliminary tournament cum selection trials are being conducted at New Delhi. Players from J&K state are being expecting invitation for the selection trial and a place in Indian team because of their good performance in the Nationals at Pune recently.

Indians left licking wounds after Victoria onslaught

MELBOURNE, Nov 27: The Indians were left with a lot of soul-searching to do after the unfancied Victoria bushrangers piled on a massive 518 built around a record 264 by Brad Hodge on the third and final day of the tour-opening cricket match here today.

With Victoria deciding to bat through the third day before declaring on 518 for eight minutes before tea break, the Indians hardly had time to make up for their earlier lapses.

In fact, their first innings disaster returned to haunt the Indians as they lost two wickets, including that of Virender Sehwag (20), before making 116 for two.

Ramesh, who made 87 in the first knock, logged a few more points for his Test selection with 36 while Aakash Chopra remained unbeaten on 55.

But it was Hodge who continued to hog the limelight at the MCG rewriting the record books in compiling 264 studded with 39 fours and a six.

There was also some drama in the final half an hour when the Victorians wanted to walk off with six overs remaining. The two Indian batsmen decided to stay put with no signal coming from the dressing room.

Obviously the Indians, chaffed at Victoria’s continuation of their innings this morning, wanted to make their own point. But they finally decided to call it off, strangely so, with an over remaining.

Chopra, who hit two fours in an Andrew McDonald over, reached his half-century in 146 minutes off 112 balls and hit eight fours.

Rahul Dravid, coming in at the fall of Ramesh, remained not out on one.

The day clearly belonged to Hodge who made the highest ever score by an Australian batsman against a touring side in a first class game in 75 years.

Only two scores have been bigger than Hodge’s against India in any form of cricket in the last 14 years. Graham Gooch had struck 333 against India in the Lord’s Test of the 1990 England tour and then Sanath Jayauriya made a hectic 340 in Colombo in 1997.

Resuming at his overnight score of 153 in the team total of 348 for five, hodged batted for 500 minutes in all for his 380-ball knock.

He completed two century stands during the day for his team, putting on 171 and 135 runs for the sixth and seventh wicket with Ian Harvey (71) and skipper Cameron White (39).

Victorians decided to deny the Indians a chance to indulge in some useful batting practice by continuing this morning. They not only smashed the confidence of bowlers to bits but also inflicted the second failure on opener Virender Sehwag who fell leg before wicket to Brett Harrop for 20.

Hodge showed no signs of tiredness or lack of appetite as he tore into the bowling this morning, realising 111 of the 170 runs which were made from 44 busy overs today.

The other two wickets to come India’s way was of Harvey (71) and White (39).

While Harvey fell to a questionable leg before decision off Laxmipathy Balaji, white nibbled at an away going delivery of Zaheer Khan to give the left-arm paceman his first wicket of the match.

Sehwag hit a few flashing drives before suffering yet another failure but Ramesh and Chopra looked in complete control before the left-hander hooked a catch in the deep. (PTI)

Moya, Srichaphan lead strong field at ATP Tata Open

CHENNAI, Nov 27: Former World No. 1 Carlos Moya of Spain would lead the star cast at the 2004 Tata Open tennis tournament beginning here in the first week of January.

Besides Moya, currently ranked seventh in the ATP list, the other attractions in the entry list of the tournament, which will run from January 5-11, include defending champion and World No. 11 Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand, No. 18 Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands, No. 21 Tommy Robredo and No. 22 Felix Mantilla, both of Spain.

Announcing the list of 25 players for South Asia’s only ATP series event, organisers said here that Moya, returning here after 1999, seems to have inspired his compatriots as nine more players from the Spainish Armada would be vying for honours in the $400,000 event, being held for the eighth straight year at the Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium.

"With the cut-off set at 106 against 113 last year, the field is very deep in tennis talent and the field holds promise for some scintillating action on the courts," said Ravi Krishnan, managing director IMG-TWI South Asia and senior international vice-president, IMG, the event managers.

One of the world’s top doubles players, Mahesh Bhupathi will compete in doubles and said he was keen to partner Leander Paes in the tournament.

India No. 1 Prakash Amritraj has been given a wild card to the singles main draw and will also feature in doubles along with his cousin Stephen Amritraj.

Paes, who is recovering from a brain lesion, has also been offered one of the four wild cards for the singles, but he was yet to accept it, Krishnan said.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhupathi described the field as a strong one with a good mix of youth and experience citing the presence of players like Srichaphan and Moya.

Besides Srichaphan, who was the darling of the crowd last year, Moya, Schalken, Robredo, John Van Lottum (the Netherlands), Alebert Motanes and Albert Portas (Spain), Jean-Rene Lisnard (France) have already played here earlier.

Schalken, the Dutch No.1, on his second visit last year had pulled out of the tournament at the last minute due to injury.

Replying to a question Ravi Krishnan said Andhra Pradesh Government had evinced interest in organising the event in Hyderabad and initial discussions had been held.

Pressed whether the event would be shifted from Chennai in future, he said "we are committed to keep the tournament here as long as there is support. Our first priority is to organise the ATP event."

M P Shankar of All-India Tennis Association said the Tata Open was part of the association’s efforts to expose Indian players to international standards.

Tamil Nadu Tennis Association president V Narayanan said such ATP events would inspire young Indians to become world class players in future.

Romit Chaterji, vice-president, corporate affairs, Tata Services Ltd, said the year was particularly important for the Tata group as the death centenary of J N Tata, birth centenary of J R D Tata and N H Tata would begin and "its a wonderful way to begin the commemoration with the Tata Open."

The qualifying rounds would be held on January 3 and 4 with the singles and doubles finals slated for January 11. (PTI)
