Discovery
of Vedic river Sarasvati
Sir,
Please
refer Prof. Charak Memorial Lecture (DE
Nov. 4)
From the
study of the origin of the Himalayas , it
becomes quite clear that first upheaval
took place during upper Eocene Times, and
the stage during which Siwalik Hills and
present configuration of the
Sub-continent took place, occurred in the
Lower Pleistocene period. Formation of
Himalayas took place in three phases:-
(i) The
first phase of the upheaval took place in
the upper Eocene Times.
(ii) The
second phase of the Upheaval took place
during middle Miocene Times.
(iii) The
third upheaval took place during lower
pleistocene. There are so many rivers,
which have originated from the Snow Clad
mountains or peaks or lakes of the
Himalayas and are regarded as Perennial
rivers. The rivers particularly, the
Indus, the Ganges, the Jamuna, the Ravi,
the Chenab, the Beas, the Satluj,
continue to flow today.
How river
Sarasvati disappeared from the land of
India, became dry, is different to
understand. There is no major earth
movements, or earth-quakes or continental
drift or abrupt rise of the Himalayas
that can cause the diversion or block the
course of the river, particularly from
the initial sources, leaving only dry
valley. Such moments change the complete
structure, topography of the areas. It is
just possible that the river Sarasvati
may be the tributary of Satluj or Jamuna
and due to severe, voluminous landslides
that accured in the Geological past might
have changed the course of the vedic
river Sarasvati and only the Dry valley
is left. Such land slides and faulting
are a common feature in this part of the
Himalayas.
Had river
Sarasvati been a perennial river, like
those mentioned here, then it must have
joined with some other rivers to form a
Delta. There is no such feature of this
river. It is just possible that Vedic
river may be the small tributary like
river Tawi, Suraj Putri, the Devka and
the Ujh, and so many small Siwalik
Rivulets, with local names. River
features which are prominent and
conspicuous proofs and evidence of their
existence, such as V shaped valley river
basin, flood plains, meanders ox-bow
lakes, and lateral deposition, sand and
gravel beds, mudcracks cross and current
bedding, lamination, pot-holes, river
terraces are quite absent, or are not
clearly established.
Lastly, it
is just possible that Sarasvati River may
be one of the members of the Indobrahm
rivers system that poured sediments into
Tethys. It might had its origin in the
Aravallies in the geological past.
Before, the final shape UP of the
Himalayas.
However,
detailed study will reveal all these
facts. Union Tourism Ministry, has take
the project of tracing its course, this
has been declared by Mr. Jag Mohan
Minister for Tourism Government of India
DE dated 8.11.2003.
