Far-flung areas need air-taxi service: Gupta Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: Union Minister of State for Defence Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has said that far-flung areas of state needed air-taxi service especially during the winter months. Speaking at a function organised by the Deccan Aviation Pvt Ltd in connection with the first anniversary of its operation at Katra Vaishno Devi here today, Prof Gupta said that several far-flung areas of the state remain cut off during the winter months. The areas like Kishtwar, Poonch and many others in Valley and Kargil need air-taxi service for ensuring better communications to the people. He referred to the existence of such service in many foreign countries and maintained that for tourism promotion such steps are necessary. Congratulating the Director and other staff of the Deccan Aviation Pvt Limited for successful operation during first year at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, the Union Minister said this Bangalore based company was engaged at holy cave shrine for the experimental basis. Another Company, Pawan Hans was engaged but it could not operate for long. The staff is rendering very good services especially to the old and weak devotees visiting shrine. This has been done with the sincere efforts of the Shrine Board officials to provide every possible facility to the pilgrims. On this occasion, several pilots and staff members of the Company including Rakesh Kumar Singhpilot, Capt Naidu, Vikas Sharma, Anil Sharma were honoured for their outstanding performance. Local ticket booking agent Ajay Gupta was also honoured by the Minister for giving highest business to the Company. Earlier, Company Director and Chief Pilot Col Jayant gave brief introduction about the Company and achievements throughout the past year. Lt Col Arun RoyHead & Sales Liaison also spoke on the guest. frames charges against two MES Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: Special Judge Anti-Corruption Jammu, Mr MK Hanjura today framed corruption charges against Roop Singh, the then Store Keeper and AP Tiwari, the then Supervisor MES, against whom Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered a case for misappropriation of scrap material worth rupees 96,500. The Judge maintained that there is a prima facie evidence on record to suggest that the accused has committed the offences commission of which has been imputed to them. Accordingly, charge for the commission of offences under Section 120 BR/W 409, 420 RPC and Sec 5(2) R/WS(1)(d) of Jammu and Kashmir Prevention of Corruption Act 2006 is framed against the accused persons. According to CBI, that on the basis of the source information that accused Roop Lal and other incharge official while working in the office GE 574 Engineering Park during 1991-93 entered into criminal conspiracy and misappropriated scrap material weighing over 19 kilograms worth rupees 96,500. After receiving the information, the CBI started investigation and during the course of investigation, CBI established that the scrap material was misappropriated by the accused and after competition of the investigation, presented challan in the court of Special Judge Anti-Corruption Jammu. The court after hearing the counsel for the accused and SPO CBI framed corruption charges against the accused and directed CBI to produce evidence on the next date of hearing. |

issues closure orders to 13 stone By Gopal Sharma JAMMU, Nov 22: The Jammu and Kashmir State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has issued closure orders to the thirteen stone crushers operating illegally in Jammu and Udhampur districts. Disclosing this to the Excelsior today, Chairman of the State Pollution Control Board, Mr S D Swatantra has said that all these units are creating high level of pollution and also effecting life of the residents of the respective areas. The inspection teams of the Board which conducted on the spot survey recently gave their reports and on the basis of these reports, strict orders were passed for the immediate closure of the stone crushers. It was found that all these units including one belonging to an influential former BJP legislator were violating the sitting criteria and the recommended guidelines of the SPCB. They tried to get stay from the court but failed to convince the court and get some relief. The concerned District Magistrates have been asked to get the orders implemented and punish the violators. The units which were ordered for closure includedM/S Himalaya Stone Crusher, M/S Pawan Stone Crusher, M/S International Stone crusher, National Stone Crusher, Bawa Ambo Stone Crusher, Shiv Shakti Stone Crusher, Arora Stone Crusher, J K Stone Crusher, Bharat Stone Crusher, Aabla Stone Crusher, B N Stone Crusher, Ashoka Stone Crusher and M/S Orient Stone Crusher. The Chairman of the PCB further disclosed that as per the sitting criteria fixed for the safe operation, a stone crusher should be 750 mts from National Highway in plain areas and 500 mtrs from National Highway in sub-mountaineous roads, 500 mts from State Highway, District and other roads in plain areas and 350 mts from Highway and other district roads/ link roads in sub-mountaineous areas. As per the PCB guidelines, such a unit should be at least 5 kms away from Jammu and Srinagar Municipal limits, 3 kms from major district headquarters, 1.5 kms from nearest residential area, 1.5 kms from nearest tourist complex or resort, 500 mts from any forest land, one kilometer from approved water supply of 20 k.lt, Nursing home, hospital, health centre, 500 mts from nearest agriculture fields/ orchards and at least 1.5 kms from nearest Education Institution. Mr Swatantra said apart from these guidelines, it was also made mandatory to develop green belts, wind breaks to contain dust particles and install water sprinkling system but most of the units despite several notices did not bother much. In the recent high level meeting held in September with Chief Minister in the chair, it was resolved to go in for immediate action against the violators, risking life of thousands of souls. Minister for Environment and Forests, Dy Chief Minister holding the charge of Industry, Principal Secretary, Industries, Principal Secretary Forests besides top officials of the SPCB also attended the meeting. The action is also being contemplated against six more such units operating illegally. They includedJamwal Stone Crusher, Neelam Stone Crusher, Shiv Shakti Stone Crusher, Jammu Builders, J K Stone Crushers and New Tawi Stone Crushers. In Jammu and Kathua alone about forty stone crushers are operating and hardly three or four possess proper NOC from the SPCB. This is for the first time since inception of the SPCB that defaulters are being strictly taken to task, he maintained. |
CM inspects development works in Srinagar Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Nov 22: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today inspected various developmental works in Srinagar and Bijbehara and passed on instructions for early completion of some of the schemes by next month, taking benefit of the current dry spell. At Rehmatabad, Mufti Sayeed asked the engineers to step up work on the surface deep drain and four laning of national highway bypass in the uptown Srinagar and ensure that vehicular traffic on Indira Gandhi road leading to the airport does not get disrupted or pedestrians face any inconvenience. While emphasizing the need for maintaining the technical standards and aesthetics of the drain, he hoped that it would be ready by December. The Rs 80-lakh drain would do away with the chronic problem of inundation of lanes and by-lanes in the Hyderpora area besides some stretches of the Indira Gandhi road. Accompanied by the Minister of State for R&B, Syed Bashir Ahmad and senior officers, the Chief Minister inspected the work on four laning of national highway taken up at a cost of Rs 168 crore. The project envisages upgradation of 18-kilometer road from Athwajan to Parimpora and earthwork of five-kilometer length from Athwajan side has been taken up. For execution of the work on this stretch, about 70 local engineers were employed by the project agency besides providing direct employment to about 500 locals and indirectly benefiting 5000 population. Mufti Sayeed urged the project authorities to speed up the pace of work on the high way which, he said, assumes added significance in view of substantial increase in vehicular traffic and the bypass being used as alternate route by many. At Bijbehara, the Chief Minister directed the Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag to immediately remove unauthorized constructions along the national highway. Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, IGP Kashmir K Rajendra and senior engineers also accompanied the Chief Minister during his visit to various development projects. |

Excelsior Correspondent KATHUA, Nov 22: Police today seized seven kilograms of charas and arrested a drug-peddler at Jatwal in Hiranagar tehsil. Police spokesman said that during routine checking, a bus was stopped at Jatwal and on frisking of passengers and checking of their laguages police recovered seven kilograms of charas from the possession of Abdul Rashid, son of Ali Mohd Rashid of Kulgam. The durg-peddler was immediately arrested and during interrogation he disclosed that he managed to dodge police as well as sleuths of other departments at Lakhanpur and entered Punjab to sell the charas but the person who had to purchase the contraband didnt turn up. In the meantime, he came in contact with some other persons, who assured him to get charas sold in Jammu at higher price but before he could reach Jammu he was nabbed by police personnel led by SHO Verinder Manhas and under the supervision of SDPO Shiv Kumar Chowhan. A case has been registered against the drug-peddler under Narcotics Drugs Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPSA). |

slain leaders Excelsior Correspondent Jammu, Nov 22: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today visited Wagam Awantipora and Lazibal Anantnag and offered his condolences to the bereaved families of late Haji Ghulam Rasool and Zulfikar Ali Jan who were killed by militants very recently. Condemning the killing of innocents by militants, Mufti Sayeed expressed his personal condolences with the bereaved families. At both the places, he told people that killing civilians, that too during the holy month of Ramadhan, would take the militants nowhere. He said there is no justification for holding gun especially when process of dialogue has started on which every citizen of the State is pinning hopes. He described the killing of civilians as senseless acts and hoped that militant would see reason and stop bleeding Kashmir. "They must realize that gun cannot provide any solution and since the dialogue has begun, peace must be given a chance", he added. Mufti Sayeed asked the Deputy Commissioner Anantnag to expedite the disbursement of ex-gratia relief and compassionate appointment to one member each of the bereaved families. Large number of people, assembled at the residences of late Zulfikar Ali Jan and late Haji Ghulam Rasool, expressed concern over killing of innocents by militants. They apprised the Chief Minister about the incidents. |
15 poppy straw bags seized at Lakhanpur Excelsior Correspondent KATHUA, Nov 22: Sleuths of Excise department seized 15 bags of poppy straw, weighing 7 quintals being smuggled in a fruit truck at Lakhanpur today. Acting on a specific information, a team of the Excise department under the supervision of Dy Commissioner Excise Lakhanpur, Nasir Iqbal ( I/C) and assisted by ETOsA S Rana, M Q Wani and B L Sharma intercepted truck No. HR26GA/ 1155 loaded with fresh fruit this morning. The vehicle was put under physical examination. The two operators who tried to escape during the process were taken into custody. It was found that 15 bags of Bhoki (poppy-straw) were concealed under the fruit boxes and were being smuggled to Delhi. The driverBilal Ahmed Sheikh, son of Mohd Yousuf of Bhatpora, Shopian in Pulwama and cleanerAbdul Qayoom Mir of Khanpora Shopian were arrested. The vehicle was also seized. |
Physically challenged persons given wheel-chairs Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: Physically challenged persons belonging to Defence establishments were rendered helping hand at a function organised at Pathankot today. The function was organised by Rail Head Petroleum Depot (RHPD), Pathankot and a team from National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH), under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment led by Mr A S Sham Sunder, Asstt Director also visited. Brig R K Sharma, Commander 21 Sub Area expressed his happiness for the support provided by NIVI for providing suitable modes for rehabilitating the physically challenged persons of our society. He further highlighted that institutes like the NIVH are set up for a noble cause for the support base for mitigating the sufferings of paraplegics, tetraplegics and providing them vocational training for transforming their lives for self-sustenance. Mr Sunder and Brig Sharma distributed 40 tricycles, 20 wheel chairs, 60 pairs of crutches, 15 pairs of walking sticks, 50 hearing aids and other essential items during the function. |
B Ed students from Rajasthan protest Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: Seeking refund of their admission fee, several students from Rajasthan, admitted to Jammu University affiliated private B Ed colleges, today held demonstration in front of the JU Administration block, here today. They were demanding that either the B Ed degree from Jammu University should be got recognised by National Council of Technical Education (NCTE) or their admission fee be refunded. The protesting students claimed they were unaware of the fact that the JU degree was not recognised by NCTE whereas in Rajasthan the B Ed degree is not considered valid without this recognition. Hence, their degree was almost useless in getting jobs in Rajasthan, they added and demanded that their admission fee be refunded without any delay. The protesters also staged a dharna there for a brief period and then dispersed off after submitting a memorandum to the Registrar Dr J S Dev. |
Students hold rally to save electricity Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: Students of different schools today participated in a rally taken out in Majalta under "save electricity campaign". The rally was organized by the Government Higher Secondary School Majalta. It was flagged off by the Principal of the institution Mrs Raj Kumari amidst thunderous applause. Besides the students from Government Higher Secondary School, Majalta, the children from Middle School Majalta, Vijay High School Majalta, and Little Bharti Public School, Majalta participated in it. Prominent among those who were present on the occasion include Bal Krishan ZEO, Jagdev Singh SHO, and Raghubir Singh, social activist. The rally covered a distance of five kilometers from Majalta to Battal and it received a tremendous response as the local people also participated in it. Attempt to smuggle mobile sets foiled by Sales Tax Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: An attempt to smuggle mobile phone sets worth Rs 4.30 lacs to the State, was foiled by alert sleuths of Sales Tax Check Post, today. According to Deputy Commissioner Sales tax, Mr Ajaz A Kakroo, one Jatinder Singh of Noida, travelling in a Jammu bound video coach bus coming from Delhi, was apprehended alongwith 57 mobile phone sets. The consignment was concealed underneath ready-made garments in three bags. The offender was attempting to smuggle the taxable goods into the State by evading Sales Tax. Security penalty of Rs 88,200, under section 15-A(4), 15-A(9) and 17-1(0) of the GST Act 1962, was levied on the offender. The Deputy Commissioner has impressed upon the staff to continue to work with devotion and be on alert to prevent tax evasion and apprehend culprits. He also advised the chronic tax evaders to refrain from attempting to smuggle taxable goods into the State. |
Swami Yogeshwar accorded rousing reception Excelsior Correspondent RAJOURI, Nov 22: Sant Balak Bal Yogeshwar Ji who arrived here today was accorded a tumultuous welcome by the people at different places enroute to this township. A grand function was organized by the Sanatan Dharam Sabha Rajouri headed by Ashok Sharma to welcome the spiritual saint in the town. On his arrival at Rajouri Bus Stand hundreds of devotees including men, women and children who were waiting in long queues to welcome the Sant Bal Yogeshwar Ji showered flowers on him. He was taken into a big procession from Bus Stand to Balidan Bhavan. The procession amidst shouting of religious slogans passed through Main Bazars of the town. Sainik Colony Sangarsh Samiti lists demands Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 22: Sainik Colony Sangarsh Samiti has urged the Government to take immediate steps in solving the problems of the people of the area. The Samiti chief, Rajiv Sharma while expressing grave concern over the failure of the authorities in redressing the grievances of the people of the area alleged that despite the repeated pleas no steps have been taken to improve the water supply in the Colony. He alleged the scarcity of drinking water in the area has added to the woes of the people of the Colony. He demanded that the water supply be made regular in the Colony and its duration be also increased . Mr Sharma also demanded installation of street lights in all the lanes of the Colony. He said despite the promises made by the concerned authorities no steps were taken in this regard till date. |
