Academy displays rare collection of miniatures By Lalit Gupta JAMMU, Nov. 19: The weeklong exhibition of miniatures that opened at Art Gallery, Abhinav Theatre complex, here today, provides an excellent opportunity to view intimately and thus appreciate and enjoy technical virtuosity of the master artists of yesteryears. Organized by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, in connection with World Heritage Week (Nov.19-25), the exhibition of miniatures titled Sambhal also showcases the last stage of the glorious painting tradition that faded away in the first decades of of 20th century. Drawn from Academys permanent collection, which purchased from a private dealer somewhere in 1970s when N.D.Sharma was Academys secretary, the displayed miniatures are an assorted group and represent quite a variety in terms of styles as well as themes. With the result one finds miniatures done in idioms including Kangra, Guler, and Rajasthani and on themes relating to Vashnavism, Shaivism, Mahabharta, Devi series and portraits. One of the two unique features of exhibition, which will be of special interest to Jammuites, are miniatures done by Jagat Ram Shuniya, the last recognized artist of Jammu school and guru of Master Sansar Chand. Other feature is the group of those miniatures which are in different stages of completion. Especially the drawings are of great artistic value as these show masterly control of line as well as its expressive quality. The semi finished paintings where only some of the areas stand colored or those where master artist has indicated in writing the colours to be filled, provide an insight into the completion process of a miniature which was essentially produced as a workshop activity and worked on by a master artist along with his pupils. The painting, showing the scene of Chakravahyua, is again unique from the point of composition and reflects creative imagination of its maker. Chief Secretary, Dr. Sudhir S Bloeria, who inaugurated the exhibition, speaking on the occasion congratulated Cultural Academy for organizing such an exhibition. He said such endeavors are required to make people aware about the rich and exclusive heritage of Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Bloeria also appreciated Academys proposal to take the services of experts in classifying its collection of miniature paintings. Earlier noted artist and writer N.D. Jamwal presented a graphic picture of the evolution of Pahari schools of paintings especially in reference to Rajput schools of painting that developed in North India. Ramesh Mehta, Secretary, Cultural Academy, in his address said that services of noted art historian B.N. Goswami will be taken to classify the miniatures. He also said that National Laboratory for Conservation is being approached for preservation of these rare miniatures. The melodious recital of Dogri folk musical form Bhakhaan by well known duo Krishna Kumari and Pradumyan Singh provided a befitting backdrop to the exhibition. The inaugural function of the exhibition was attended by literateurs like Prof. Ram Nath Shashtri, Prof. Lalit Mangotra, Ved Gahi, artists, art students and large number of art lovers. |

That indeed is a sad commentary on our society and reflects adversely on our social and religious education. Campaigner against evil: The other side of Ch Lal Singh
JAMMU, Nov 19: Putting health services back on rails to a larger extent, young, dynamic and vocal Health Minister Ch. Lal Singh has of late turned to be a vociferous campaigner against boozing, smoking and other social evils. Almost in all his public engagements, he ends on an awakening note, soliciting a promise from his audience, which they instantly assure even without knowing what it would be all about. The Minister begins asking people to vow not to drink or smoke as these not only adversely affect their health but also eat up meager income, depriving their dependents for basic minimum needs. Responding to the sincere overtures of the enthusiastic Minister, the people voluntarily throw away cigarette packets, bidi bundles, chewing tobacco masalas and loudly vow to give these up. Women, sitting in the jam-packed audience, view the scenario approvingly with hope. How much and how long the impact of the Ministers advice remains is a big question. But even if just one per cent get rid of these evils, the purpose is fulfilled, said an elderly villager, Sukhram, who lamented that he had a beneficiary in his home at least, pointing towards his son, who is otherwise a chain smoker. Ch. Lal Singh has made it a point to canvass against social evils wherever he goes. At Sabar, a village near Basohli, addressing women folk, he impressed upon them to stick to desi tea rather than new branded modern tea. We have plenty of milk as every household in village is keeping a cow or buffalo, so why deprive children of nutritious diet, he remarks while referring to certain quotes from religious texts. Women, particularly the elderly, nod their heads conveying full endorsement to his thoughts. The Minister does not stop here, for the young and rational, who desire scientific explanation to his assertions, reference is made of nicotine, caffeine which, he says, are slow poisons killing vitality of posterity. In Kashmir, at a function organized in connection with inauguration of hi-profile Holmium Yag Laser, Mr. Singh took opportunity to sensitize the medical fraternity towards these evils. |
Mufti Govt not serious
about rehabilitation of border migrants Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 19: Even after the completion of de-mining activity in several border areas, the farmers could not resume their agriculture activities because they are still apprehending possibility of left over mines in the fields and the BSF and Army authorities have failed to tractorize their fields despite assurance. Former Minister and provincial president of National Conference, for Jammu Ajay Sadhotra (MLA) told media-persons at a press conference that agricultural fields have turned into jungles as the farmers could not carry on normal activities due to mining. Now when the troops have been withdrawn and demining activities in most of the areas is over, the farmers are unable to start the activity. He said that Army and BSF should plough the fields for them at least for once so that they could carry on their routine practice. They are afraid of going into their fields apprehending fear of any mine blast. Launching a scathing attack on the Mufti-led coalition Government, the NC leader pointed out that a large number of families of border migrants ( app 6040) are living in the tents in pitiable condition. They are not being provided relief regularly and their tents are torn out. Despite tall claims of the State Government to rehabilitate them at the safer places, nothing has been done so far in this regard. Several meetings are being held and visits conducted but the innocent people are being befooled. The State Government has failed to project the case of border migrants properly before Centre and nothing is going to happen. He demanded that regular relief be provided to them and they should be treated at par with the Kashmir migrants. The relief/ compensation for their damaged houses, shops and perished animals in the shelling be provided immediately. The compensation at the rate of Rs 3 lakhs be given to the families whose house has been totally damaged in Pak shelling. He pointed out that NC as a major opposition party will also take up the case in its own capacity with the Centre for the sanction of relief. Describing the attitude of the Mufti Government as anti-people and anti- farmers, Mr Sadhotra alleged that stalling the process of electricity tariff and increasing power load of every electricity connection holder, the Government is just befooling the innocent public. The power tariff was already enhanced and there was no need to go ahead with another increase. Succumbing to mounting public pressure and opposition from the NC, the coalition Government preferred to neglect the idea of increasing tariff but the PDD has been directed to double the existing load per consumer. He condemned the attitude of the Government and warn that NC will oppose it tooth and nail and also launch mass public campaign in this connection. Referring to the plight of farmers, the NC leader said that a good paddy crop has been witnessed this year but farmers are unable to get better price of their crop as there is no Government procurement system and in the private market there is only exploitation and farmers is at loss. The Government should take effective steps in this regard. Mr G M Jan, Rashpal Singh, Javed Ranaall MLAs, Sheikh Bashir AhmedSecy, MLC Brij Mohan, YNC leader Chander Mohan were also present in the conference. |
