Srinath hangs up his boots

BANGALORE, Nov 11: Having gallantly shouldered India’s pace bowling responsibilities for over a decade, Javagal Srinath today bid adieu to international cricket bringing to an end the career of one of the fastest bowlers in the country.

The 34-year-old Karnataka speedster, who had scripted many a memorable victory in a career spanning 12 years, has been plagued by niggling injuries since the last couple of years and the decision today, coming barely a few days before the Australian tour, did not come as a surprise.

Srinath had hinted recently in Kolkata of an imminent retirement saying he might hang his boots if he felt he was not fully fit ahead of India’s tour down under later this month.

"Yes, I have decided to retire. It is time to go," Srinath told reporters here realising he would not be able to board the flight for Australia, the team for which is to be announced on Thursday.

"I have no regrets. In fact I am happy that Indian fast bowling is in good health with the likes of Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra," Srinath said.

Arguably one of India’s fastest bowler ever, Srinath was regular in the team for years together after taking the pace mantle from the legendary Kapil Dev in 1993-94.

A rare gentleman among modern-day fast bowlers, most of them notorious for their tongue lashing and sledging, Srinath captured 236 wickets in 67 Tests at an average of 30.49. His best of 8 for 86 came against arch-rivals Pakistan in Kolkata in an Asian Test Championship match in February, 1999.

The second-most successful bowler after Kapil Dev (434 Test wickets), Srinath’s Test records may not be too flattering, but his showing in one-day cricket was enviable, grabbing 315 wickets in 229 matches at an economy rate of 4.44.

Srinath, only the fifth bowler to take over 200 wickets in one-day internationals, also has the distinction of grabbing maximum number of five-wicket hauls by an Indian bowler in the shorter version of the game.

Making his test debut in 1991 against Australia at Brisbane, Srinath gamely took on the task of bowling his heart out on lifeless Indian wickets with reasonable success.

Often compared to the likes of Alan Donald in terms of speed, Srinath was at his devastating best in overseas conditions during his peak years.

But like many of the fast bowlers, the lanky Srinath also had his share of despairing moments as the wear and tear of bowling long spells took a toll on his shoulder forcing him to sit out on a few tours.

Tired and disgruntled after the tour of West Indies in 2002, srinath sprung a surprise by announcing his retirement from Test cricket but was coaxed into retracting his decision by captain Sourav Ganguly.

Responding to the captain’s call, Srinath made himself available for the West Indies series at home but injury worries forced him to skip the tour of New Zealand in December last year.

However, Srinath regained full fitness before the 2003 world cup where he played a stellar role to guide India to the final against Australia.

Srinath also turned out for county sides Gloucestershire and Leicestershire in separate stints to further hone his skills on bouncy english pitches.

A senior statesman of the team, Srinath passed on his vast experience and useful tips to the younger crop of fast bowlers like Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra who blossomed under his tutelage, the results of which were evident during the World Cup.

It is creditable the way Srinath, nicknamed Babu, stood out and kept his place in the team even as his new-ball partners kept changing.

A qualified mechanical engineer, the amiable Srinath stayed away from controversies and maintained a low-profile to earn many fans in the game which made him popular worldwide. (PTI)

BCCI may rope in Srinath for training speedsters

BANGALORE, Nov 11: Javagal Srinath today said he was planning to set up an academy for fast bowlers even as the Indian cricket board hinted that he may be drafted to train speedsters.

At a press conference where he announced his retirement from first class cricket, Srinath said he was seriously thinking of establishing such an academy though he had not firmed up any plans.

Cricket board president Jagmohan Dalmiya, who was also present, said Srinath was set to begin his second innings —"as a coach, as a consultant, as a guide and continuing role-model for fast bowlers".

Describing Srinath as a stalwart, Dalmiya hoped that the bowler would come forward and guide Indian cricket. "A role for Srinath is being worked out," he said.

"When a person of Srinath’s stature is eager to contribute off the field, it has to be grabbed with both hands and accepted," Dalmiya said.

Srinath said the indian team beating Pakistan in three World Cups were the most memorable moments of his 12-year career. (PTI)

‘Success at 2010 bid could boost Asian economies’

NEW DELHI, Nov 11: An unprecedented boost to international partnerships and economies in the South East Asian region will be on the cards if India wins the bid for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, according to Sydney Olympics CEO Sandy Hollway.

"The 2008 Olympics are being held in Beijing and if India wins the bid for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, we will see two of the biggest countries hosting the two most important movements in the world within a span of two years. It will be very good for the region and will give an unprecedented boost to international partnerships and the economies," Mr Hollway told UNI here today.

"The Sydney Olympics were held in 2000 and we are now hosting the 2003 Rugby World Cup. The Afro-Asian Games were held in Hyderabad this year. Melbourne will host the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the Olympics will be held in Beijing in 2008. If India wins the 2010 bid, the region will see a new high in exchange of information.

"India and Australia share a strong friendship and all exchanges and close constructive dialogues will take place at the official as well as at the unofficial level through visits and workshops," he added.

Mr Hollway, who is now assisting the Chinese authorities in organising the 2008 Olympics, said he will be more than willing to co-ordinate with Indian officials if New Delhi was to win the 2010 bid that is to be decided on Thursday at the West Indian city of Jamaica.

"Co-ordination is the key when it comes to hosting events of this magnitude. There will be two kinds of ties — non-commercial and business. We will be honest enough to admit our problems and the solutions we followed to the hosts of the events. How to do something better than what we did at the Sydney Olympics. At the same time there are going to be business consultants who will look into the actual setting up and efficient running of the stadia and other facilities," said Mr Hollway, who is also a member of the Australia-India Council.

"Hosting such important games is a big, complex and risky affair. It’s not like hosting a one-off tennis tournament. So from the day you win your bid, you have to start building an alliance that will deliver the final results."

"Even the Chinese understand that though they have build on a massive scale, the Olympics is a challenge and that everything needs to be perfect. You get only one chance to do the main event," he said.(UNI)

Sachin releases Dravid’s biography

BANGALORE, Nov 11: Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar today released a biography of India vice-captain Rahul Dravid, penned by sports journalist Vedam Jaishankar.

Terming Dravid as a "solid batsman and one of the top batsmen in the world," Tendulkar said "Rahul is a perfect role model for youngsters and he has established that hard work definitely has its rewards."

Dravid was yesterday named the Castrol Indian cricketer of the year (2002-03) in a ballot by former and current India players.

Dravid said release of the biography only added to his responsibility to keep abreast of the game and "to do more."

"Initially, I was reluctant when Mr Jaishankar approached me for permission to bring out a biography. But he was such a writer, he succeeded in getting my approval."

Describing Tendulkar as his role model when he began his career, Dravid recalled staying with the batting genius in a dormitory while playing against West zone in 1986. (PTI)

The event will be held in the traditional best of five, seven, nine, 11 and 13 frames. (UNI)

India out to stop Australian juggernaut

BANGALORE, Nov 11: Bolstered by the return of skipper Sourav Ganguly, India are eagerly looking forward to put behind their two successive defeats in the cricket tri-series and stop the Australian juggernaut in the crucial day-night match here tomorrow.

Ganguly’s return to the side after a four-week injury lay-off should be a big morale-booster for India, sulking after two consecutive defeats to Australia in Mumbai and New Zealand in Cuttack.

India’s roller-coaster show in the tri-series means the hosts are now in a perform-or-perish situation.

Though the outcome of tomorrow’s day-night match would not decide as to who would cross swords with Australia in the summit clash in Kolkata on November 18, a victory for India would certainly ease the enormous pressure ahead of their last league match against New Zealand on Saturday.

Australia are sitting pretty atop the points table with 23 points, courtesy one defeat and four wins in a row. The black caps have 10 from five league engagements while India are on nine from four outings.

In view of this and bonus points also coming into play, the India-New Zealand encounter in Hyderabad has turned out to be a semi-final of sorts.

But before India can even think about the Hyderabad match, they have to find out ways to overcome the Australian hurdle tomorrow.

Ganguly, itching to have a go after missing quite a bit of action, has urged his teammates to "fire" as a team and find their bearings again in the tournament, taking heart from the fact that they did beat the world champions in their first exchange at Gwalior. "We have beaten them (Australia) in Gwalior and hope to do well again," Ganguly said. The other point in India’s favour is that they will be able to field a near full-strength team tomorrow. Opener Virender Sehwag, who missed the cuttack match due to an ankle injury, Zaheer Khan (chest infection) and Harbhajan Singh (finger) are all expected to take the field, with a chance also that Ashish Nehra may be fielded for the first time in the tri-series. Anil Kumble is also set to join the side at the Chinnaswamy Stadium after opting out of the Cuttack match due to the demise of his father. Coach John Wright stated the obvious when he said the players would have to pull up their socks if they were to entertain thoughts of putting it across their World Cup nemesis. "It is an important week for us," Wright said emphasising the need for his players to fire on all cylinders in the match tomorrow.

Bangalore has been a happy hunting ground for India against Australia as they have not lost to them in the three matches they have played so far at this venue and Ganguly said the team was keen to maintain its clean slate.

For Ricky Ponting’s men, verdict of tomorrow’s encounter is inconsequential but the world champions showed they do not lack motivation even in what may be a dead rubber for them in the match against New Zealand at Guwahati when they overcame odds to inflict their sixth consecutive defeat on their trans-tasman rivals on Sunday.

The indomitable Aussies love to raise the bar constantly and have made it clear they are not going to make life any easier for the Indians.

"We want to maintain the tempo. There is always scope for improvement. We will give our best. We will go with our best eleven," Ponting said to put India up on notice.

Going by Ponting’s remarks, Australia, who went into the Guwahati match without firebrand openers Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden besides their find of the tournament speedster Brad Williams, would also field their best possible eleven tomorrow.

What India need to upset the favourites is bucketfuls of resolve and the confidence that they can pull off a repeat of the Gwalior match. (PTI)

Tomorrow, the Indo-Belarussian pair will take on Daniel Nestor of Canada and Mark Knowles of Bahamas, who remained unbeaten after recording their second consecutive win. (PTI)

We thank Srinath for making Indian cricket proud: Ganguly

BANGALORE, Nov 11: Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly today thanked fast bowler Javagal Srinath, who has decided to quit international cricket, for serving the country for a long time and doing the nation proud.

"He served Indian cricket for a long time with distinction. We thank him for making Indian cricket proud," Ganguly told reporters here.

"He is a fast bowler. Probably his body is not holding up," he said.

Recalling the superb performance of Srinath, Ganguly said: "It’s been a pleasure playing with him for so many years. At the end of the day it is his personal decision."

Ganguly, who had earlier persuaded the Karnataka pacer to come out of his retirement, said this time such a question did not arise. (PTI)
