Indian colts eyeing World Cup after Asia Cup crown

NEW DELHI, Nov 7: After establishing their supremacy in the region, the Indian colts are now eyeing the ultimate glory — victory at the Junior World Cup to be held in Bangladesh early next year.

India, who started the under-19 Asian championship in Pakistan on a sorry note losing their first match against Sri Lanka by four wickets, roared back in style registering sensational wins in the next two games before drubbing Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final at Lahore yesterday for the title.

"This is a morale boosting win for us ahead of the world cup and it will do a world of good to the players. Though some played superbly throughout the tournament, it was collective effort which won us the title," coach Robin Singh told PTI today.

"Winning is very important for every side and the title win yesterday came at the right time’’.

"The way we bounced back to win the cup speaks volumes of what team work can do."

However, Robin Singh does not want to be carried away by the success and says India’s real test will come when they face stiffer oppositions in the World Cup.

"The World Cup will be the real test for the side," said the former India allrounder.

Robin Singh singled out Irfan Pathan for special praise saying the left-arm seamer proved his credentials with some fine display of fast bowling.

"He is knocking at the door of international cricket and I think he has it in him to succeed at the highest level," he said.

"Irfan stands a very good chance since he is a fine bowler and the Indian team is on the look out of good pacers," Robin Singh said.

Pathan bagged the man of the series award for his 19-wicket haul during the event which included dream figures of nine for 16 off seven overs against Bangladesh in the last league match.

He was also instrumental in India’s sensational 10-run win against Pakistan in an earlier match and played a crucial role in the final as well claiming three vital scalps.

Robin Singh also has a special word for skipper A T Rayudu for his show with the bat.

"Rayudu is a very fine batsman with a lot of potential. Players like him and some others in the side need to be groomed as they can serve the country for years in future."

The Indian team, which was to come to India via Dubai on Saturday, made some last-minute changes in their schedule following their victory yesterday and got permission to cross over to India from the Wagah border, which is only 20km from Lahore.

"It is much easier to come to India by bus from lahore than going to Dubai and then get the plane for here.

"The change in schedule was made so that we could save some time in reaching home," he said.

Robin Singh is to leave for Chennai this evening. (PTI)

Injury hit India was no match for Kiwis

By Ravi Shastri

You can’t write New Zealand off so easily, as I have been emphasizing so often. In the last couple of years, under the admirable stewardship of Stephen Fleming, they have become a side that is not only committed to vigorous battle, but also enjoys winning.

In the final analysis, they won the Cuttack match quite easily. But just as easily it could have gone the other way had the batsmen not tightened up. Losing four wickets for less than 75 runs can make the going extremely tough even if the target set by India was only 247. That is where the grit and self-belief of this New Zealand side came through exemplarily.

I thought Craig McMillan was the star of the day with Scott Styris only a little behind as they pulled their side out of big trouble and on to a facile win. McMillan is having a wonderful tour, and with maturity looks a much better batsman than his average suggests. He was the pillar of the side, holding firm at one end as Styris opened up with the big shots.

India was hit by injuries, and there were a handful of new faces, which could not have helped the captain’s task. Also, there the decision against Tendulkar was very, very poor, especially since he is the man in form, though this must be cancelled out against the shocker that Styris got.

But India made a big mistake of playing three spinners in this match. There is the temptation to play the extra spinner on the slow, turning tracks but in my estimation this does not make much sense in a one day game, unless the wicket is likely to crumble. I would always go for three seamers, with at least one who can bat a bit.

Zaheer Khan played that part to an extent on Friday. Had he not clouted 20 runs in the last over, India’s score would have been meager. This is what tail-enders are expected to deliver today and it is important that all bowlers aim to contribute something with the bat. Zaheer’s onslaught gave the team a fighting chance, but in the end, New Zealand were just too good.

From India’s point of view, the two gains were the return to form of Mohammed Kaif and the fine spell by Murali Kartik. Kaif had suffered through lack of opportunities so far but showed that when given the responsibility, he can deliver the goods. Kartik not only added variety to the attack, but kept the batsmen on a tight leash. His aggressive attitude also helps the team cause.

India now find themselves in a bit of bother for a place in the final in TVS Cup, but if this forces the players to lift their performances in the remaining games, it may be all for the good.(TCM)

Lathi charge to control cricket fans

BANGALORE, Nov 7: Police resorted to lathi charge to control cricket fans, who turned violent at the Karnataka State Cricket Association at the counters selling tickets for the November 12 tie between India and Australia in the ongoing tri-series.

Salgaocar advance to Durand Cup final

NEW DELHI, Nov 7: Tomba Singh inspired national football league runners-up Salgaocar Sports Club to stage a superb fightback and overcome Mahindra United 2-1 en route to the final of the 116th Durand Cup Football Tournament here today.

In a match that saw fortunes fluctuating to either sides at the Ambedkar Stadium, Federation Cup champions Mahindra took an early lead when foreign recruit Felix Aboagye scored in the 2nd minute and led 1-0 at halftime.

But Salgaocar, after changing ends, put in a spirited performance and won with goals from Felix Ibrebru (58th minute) and Dharamjit Singh (73rd) to advance to Monday’s title clash. (PTI)

Second win for Haryana as they beat J&K

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 7: Last year’s silver medalist, Haryana today won their second league tie beating hosts J&K by six wickets to top the points tally with four points in the North Zone Junior Women’s cricket tournament being played here.

Poor ground work caused J&K’s defeat as the fielders were unable to hit the stumps as and when they got the chance of a run-out. Furthermore they dropped a couple of catches at the crucial stages, thereby allowing the visitors to take away the match.

Earlier, batting first after winning the toss, Jammu and Kashmir set a target of 132 runs for the loss of six wickets in the stipulated 35 overs, which, in reply, Haryana chased in 32.2 overs with six wickets in hand.

Meenu and Chhaya played magnificent innings and brought hosts out of the troubled waters. J&K was struggling at 47 for four, but both these batswomen stayed on the wicket and together brought the score to 117. Meenu made highest 43 runs while Chhaya contributed 33. Gulayat, who opened J&K innings was trapped leg before wicket by Reena at 14.

Reena, Shashi and Deepti shared two wickets each for Haryana.

Batting second, Haryana reached the required total in 32.2 overs for the loss of four wickets. Shashi and Anju remained unbeaten contributing 26 and 32 runs respectively. Seema added 30 valuable runs to the total while Reena made 17. From J&K, Meenu claimed three wickets for 20 runs in seven overs. Sonam took one for 22 in five overs she bowled.
