India allow Kiwis to fly out of the nest CUTTACK, Nov 6: A jittery India allowed New Zealand to wriggle out of a precarious position to clinch a stunning four-wicket victory over the hosts and bounce back into reckoning in the TVS Cup triangular cricket series here today. Chasing a competitive target 247 for victory, the Kiwis found themselves on the mat to give the hosts an early control of the game but Scot Styris and Craig McMillan showed remarkable resilience to steer the team to victory with 2.3 overs to spare. After leaving the visitors gasping at 68 for four at one stage, the indians had themselves to blame for letting the Kiwis fly out of the nest under the Barabati Stadium floodlights as they ran out of steam when it mattered most on a slow track. New Zealand, who desperately needed a win to keep themselves afloat in the series, have caught up India on the points table with both the teams having garnered nine points from four outings so far. Australia, the third team in the fray, have already romped into the final with 18 points from four matches The majestic clock tower at the far end of the picturesque Barabati Stadium, hosting its first-ever floodlight encounter, stood witness to the Indian debacle as McMillan (82 not out) and Styris (68) led the spirited Kiwis fightback with a 127-run fifth wicket association to tame the hosts in their own den. The New Zealand run chase began with a flourish as their captain Stephen Fleming turned on the heat with a barrage of boundaries but the innings plunged into disarray after his dismissal with the fall of four quick wickets. The Kiwis rattled up 39 runs in just over five overs but the home side bounced back to reduce the visitors to 68 for four with speedster Zaheer Khan doing the bulk of the damage. Fleming, who seemed to be in a punitive mood slamming five boundaries during his 14-ball 24, was the first to depart leading to a top order collapse as Chris Nevin (29), Chris Harris (0) and Lou Vincent (1) joined him in the dressing room in quick succession. Paceman Ajit Agarkar got rid of the dangerous fleming trapping him leg before wicket much to the delight of the Indians while Zaheer Khan, who proved very expensive in the first two overs, accounted for Harris. Harris was also adjudged leg before wicket to a sharp incoming delivery from Zaheer but was distinctly unhappy with the decision. Zaheer, who seemed to get his rhythm right after taking his first wicket, struck another blow for the kiwis by evicting Lou Vincent, who has been having a rather disappointing triangular series. Vincent became the third leg before victim for the black caps who suddenly found themselves in a precarious position with Nevin also gifting away his wicket for a 45-ball 29. Nevin, who appeared to be quite comfortable, went for a sweep shot but Yuvraj Singh held on to a brilliant catch at short midwicket in Harbhajan Singhs second over. Scott Styris and Craig McMillan performed the salvage job to pull the Kiwis out of the pit with a resolute 127-run partnership to put the run chase back on track. Both Styris and McMillan did not take too many risks and were quite content to keep the scoreboard moving with gentle nudges and pushes against the Indians spinners who managed to stem the run flow to some extent. But the home team could not sustain the pressure for a long time after the two spinners completed their first spell with leg spinner Sairaj Bahutule, returning to competitive cricket after a long gap, failing to make much of an impact. While Styris was quite content in playing the sheet anchors role, McMillan opened up to execute some glorious shots on both sides of the wicket to ensure that the run rate did not climb too much. Styris flicked Tendulkar to the boundary to notch up his half century while his partner also reached the landmark by taking a single off the same bowler to frustrate the Indians who seemed to run out of ideas after the fifth-wicket pair got into the groove. Indian colts are Asian champions ISLAMABAD, Nov 6: Robin Uthappa made a solid 88 as India beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets to win the Asian under-19 four-nation cricket tournament at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore today. After restricting the Lankans for a modest 225 in 49.4 overs, the Indian colts rode on unbeaten half centuries from Rakesh Solanki and captain Ambati Rayudu to achieve the target in 44.4 overs. Uthappa, whose 86-ball 88 at the top laid the platform for Indias chase, was declared man of match while left arm seamer Irfan Pathan, who came up with another excellent bowling performance claiming three for 33, was named man of the series. This is the first official visit by an Indian cricket team at any level to Pakistan since 1998 when a junior side toured the neighbouring country. The quadrangular event between teams of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is part of the initiative by the Asian Cricket Council to promote the game in the continent at junior level. In August, a triangular tournament featuring academy teams of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka was held in Colombo. Indias victory in the final avenged its four wicket loss to Sri Lanka in the round-robin clash. The Indians, however, scored sensational victories over hosts Pakistan and Bangladesh in league matches. Baroda paceman Pathan finished with 19 wickets from the tournament. Put into bat, the Lankans owed their respectable total to the hundred run fifth-wicket partnership between the 19-year old left hand bat Ganganath Ratnayake (45) and captain Mohamed Maharoof (57) who resurrected the innings which had disintegrated to four 43 after a rousing start. H K Vithana and Kularatne brought 23 runs inside the third over before Pathan, who claimed nine for 16 including a hat-trick against Bangladesh, rapped the former on the pads. Sunny Singh had Kularatne caught by wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik and later removed Maharoof and G T De Silva to return with three for 35. Kosela Kulasekara contributed 29 at the lower order but two run outs towards the end robbed off valuable runs. Uthappa, promoted up the order after useful knocks in the previous matches, attacked from the outset. His 88 came in 124 minutes and contained 13 fours. He added 54 runs for the opening stand with Shiva Kant Shukla and another 82 for the decisive second wicket stand with Solanki before falling leg before to Angelo Mathews. Rayudu then joined Solanki and the unbroken 93-run stand for the third wicket took the match away from the opposition. Rayudus enterprising 57 came off 53 balls with seven fours and two sixes. Brief scores: Sri Lanka under-19 225 in 49.4 overs (G Ratnayake 45, M Maharoof 57, K Kulasekara 29; Pathan 3-33, Sunny Singh 3-35) lost to India U-19 229 for two in 44.4 overs (R Uthappa 88, R Solanki 56 no, A Rayudu 57 no). East Bengal, AI complete semi lineup in Durand Cup NEW DELHI, Nov 6: Dempo striker R C Prakash missed a crucial penalty as national football league champions East Bengal scored a 3-0 win to set up a semifinal clash with Air India, who drew 1-1 with Vasco FC, in the Durand Cup Football Tournament here today. Requiring just a draw to advance, Dempo held the defending champions goalless till the 51st minute when Mike Okoro put the Kolkatans ahead but wasted a golden opportunity to draw level two minutes later when Prakash blasted a penalty kick wide. East Bengal then survived several attacks by the goans before Malsawmtluanga (81st) and K Kulothungan (89) put the match beyond the reach of Dempo. Earlier in the day, Air India came back from a 12th minute goal by Dennis Cabral and equalised through Suprit Jathanna in the 56th minute to pip Vasco to second place in Group D. Isha Lakhani shocks Sania Mirza on way to semis MUMBAI, Nov 6: Unseeded Isha Lakhani recorded the biggest ever upset of her career when she ousted junior Wimbledon doubles champion and seventh seed Sania Mirza on way to the womens singles semi-finals of the 25,000 USD prize money NSCI-ITF womens tennis circuit here today. The diminutive Mumbai lass played an attacking game always rushing to the net at the first opportunity to come out with a 6-3 1-6 6-2 victory. The match which lasted one hour 26 minutes saw Isha jump to a 4-2 lead with a break in the fifth game. Though Sania fought well she could not stop her rival winning the set 6-3. In the second set sania came out firing on all cylinders and within no time took 5-1 lead with breaks in the second and fourth games before serving out the set at 6-1. The match was set for a nail-bitting finish with both the players giving nothing away. Isha broke Sania in the fourth game to go 3-1 up and held serve for a 4-1 lead. Sania fought back with some deep serves but still dropped her serve in the sixth game to trail 1-5. However, Sanias experience stood her in good stead and she managed to break Isha in the seventh game to reduce the margin to 2-5. The Mumbai girl then fought well to take a 40-15 lead on Sanias serve. The Hyderabad star managed to save one match-point with a deceptive drop shot but failed to save the second match point when her return went too long giving Isha the set and with it the match at 6-2.
