Ganguly starts training

KOLKATA, Nov 4: In a bid to regain full fitness ahead of the November 12 tri-series cricket match against Australia, Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly today had his maiden session at the gymnasium after recovering from a painful abscess on his left thigh.

Ganguly, who went to the Pankaj Gupta indoor coaching centre of the cricket association of Bengal this afternoon, did some cycling, weight training and swiss ball routine.

"I am now ok. I’ll definitely play in the November 12 match against Australia at Bangalore. Towards that end, I’ll train daily here," Ganguly told reporters after the hour-long session.

Ganguly, however, said he did not do any nets during the day. "The time is not yet ripe for net practice," he said.

The dashing southpaw said he was following a fitness regime prescribed by Indian team physio Andrew Leipus who called on him yesterday.

Leipus, on his way to Cuttack from Mumbai, spent some time at Ganguly’s residence to get a first-hand idea about his condition.

The South African examined Ganguly’s wound and suggested a programme which would put the cricketer, who underwent two surgical procedures within five days last month for the abscess, in fine shape physically before the Bangalore tie.

Ganguly missed the second Test against New Zealand as also the first four matches of the ongoing one-day series upto the Cuttack game against the Kiwis on November 6 due to the infection. (PTI)

McGrath aiming to be fit for first Test against India

SYDNEY, Nov 4: Australia’s leading fast bowler Glenn McGrath is targeting next month’s opening cricket Test against India in Brisbane as his comeback match from ankle surgery.

Australia are shaping to field their first-choice bowling attack against the Indians with fellow injured bowlers Brett Lee, Jason Gillespie and Stuart MacGill also expected to be available.

The quartet is missing the current one-day triangular series in India which also involves New Zealand.

McGrath was originally expected to be back in action for the Melbourne boxing day Test but his manager Warren Craig said the bowler’s recovery was progressing better than expected.

"The original thought when he had the surgery was that he wouldn’t be back until the boxing day test match but he’s well ahead of schedule now," Craig said here today.

"He’s aiming to at least be for fit the first Test (at the Gabba starting December 4) and then it’s up to the selectors as to which way they want to go with him."

Craig said McGrath, who underwent ankle surgery in early October, was looking forward to facing the Indians.

Lee is also recovering from an ankle operation, performed just 10 days ago, but he is walking around and confident of being fit for the opening test of the summer. (AFP)

Pathan’s 9-wkt haul demolishes Bangladesh

ISLAMABAD, Nov 4: Irfan Pathan produced a devastating spell of fast bowling to capture nine wickets including a hat-trick as India demolished Bangladesh by an emphatic 189-run victory in a league match of the Asian under-19 tournament in Lahore today.

After India were all out for 223 in 48.4 overs, the Baroda speedster virtually ran through the Bangladeshi innings returning with dream figures of 9-16 to give India their second successive victory in the tournament.

Bangladesh were bundled out for a paltry 34 in 14.5 overs as Pathan proved too hot for their continental minnows in a totally one-sided contest.

Sunny Singh returned with one for 17 in seven overs.

Pathan, who got in to his wicket-taking business as soon as Bangladesh batsmen started their chase, began with a wicket in the second ball of the innings inducing an edge from opener Naeem Islam to wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik.

Man-of-the-match Pathan made the day miserable for the Bangladeshis as he kept on taking wickets at regular intervals and even did not allow any batsman to reach double figures.

Captain Nafis Iqbal was the top-scorer with nine while Bangladesh accumulated 10 runs through extras. Five batsmen failed to open their account.

Pathan’s hat-trick came in the last over of the day when he dismissed Sagir Hossain (5) Ziaur Rahman (0) and Shahadat Hossain (0) to notch the big win for his side.

Earlier, India recovered from four for 40 to post a healthy score with valuable contributions from Karthik and S Raina (47). Pathan also came good with the bat making a solid 34 from just 31 balls with the help of four boundaries and a six.

This was India’s second win in the competition after they beat Pakistan by 10 runs in a league match earlier. They, however, lost their first game against Sri Lanka.

In another match, Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 14 runs.

Brief scores:

India 223 all out in 48.4 overs (Karthik 77, Raina 47, Pathan 34; Nadif Chowdhury 3-22, Naeem Islam 3-40) beat Bangladesh 34 all out in 14.5 overs (Pathan 9-16).

Sri Lanka 248 for five in 50 overs (J K Silva 88; Riaz Afridi 3-52) beat Pakistan Jahangir Mirza 65, Afridi 62; Ganganath Ratnayake 3-34). (PTI)

Tourism Deptt okays sports calender for Jammu

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

Jammu, Nov 4: The calendar of sports activities for Jammu division during this season was approved here today at a high level meeting chaired by Minister for Tourism Ghulam Hassan Mir.

The meeting was attended by Secretary Tourism Najmus Saqib, Director General Tourism Saleem Beigh and Managing Director JKTDC, A.A. Wani, besides senior functionaries of Tourism and Sports & Youth Services departments.

It was decided that paragliding and kayaking courses would be conducted at Sanasar and Mansar, respectively. Similarly, skiing courses would also be organized at Patnitop during November and December.

Detailed discussion was held over successful conduct of the sports events in Jammu division. The arrangements being made for conduct of national level winter sports were also reviewed in the meeting.

The Tourism Minister underscored the need for close coordination between all the departments and agencies so that these events are organized smoothly. He said that such events are outdoor activities and these depend on weather especially wind conditions and as such all related arrangements need to be ensured well in advance to facilitate the participants.

The department of tourism initiated these adventure sports in J&K in collaboration with Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering in 1993 at Sanasar. Sanasar is a cup-shaped meadow surrounded by majestic deodar trees and is an ideal site for the beginners to learn the tips of paragliding. Likewise, kayaking courses shall be taken up at Mansar in collaboration with the State Youth Services and Sports Department.

The package programme for participation of students from different states in skiing courses formulated by JKTDC was also discussed in depth.

The Minister appreciated the package and urged for its wide publicity across the country so that maximum number of students from various universities participate in the events.

Durand Cup Football
Air India beat J&K Bank 2-1

NEW DELHI, Nov 4: A brace by star striker Baichung Bhutia saved the day for Asean and defending champions East Bengal as they struggled past Indian Bank 3-2 while Air India edged past Jammu and Kashmir Bank 2-1 at the 116th Durand Cup here today.

East Bengal, without their five regular players, looked listless in the midfield and played without any imagination for most part of the Group B quarter final league match at the Ambedkar Stadium. The highly tensed Kolkata super league play-off against Mohun Bagan on Sunday seemed to have taken a toll on their players.

East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmic blamed the referee for 3-2 result as he held the second goal of Indian Bank a clear foul. "We conceded the first goal by silly mistake while the second one was a clear foul on Subhash Chakraborty," he said, and quickly added, "this was a very ordinary performance by our boys. But the team is not getting it’s rythm as it is without their five regulars, including mid-fielders Douglas De Silve, Tushar Rakshit and Chandan Das."

The national league champions’ indifferent attitude towards the match was evident from the very beginning as the conceded an early goal because of a defence lapse.

M Mani of Indian Bank took advantage of a mispass by East Bengal defender Mahesh Gawli and moved inside the penalty box of his opponent team and placed the ball in the right side of the goalie to make it 1-0 in the second minute of the match.

East Bengal struck back soon through Baichung as his header of Alvito D’Cunha’s corner proved too good for bank’s Goalie Felix Edward, playing in place of Sebastian Netto, who conceded three goals, against Dempo on Sunday.

Though the keeper collected the ball but went inside the line as the referee gave decision in favour of East Bengal.

At lemon break, the two teams were tied at 1-1.(AGENCIES)

Kartik may find place in playing XI

CUTTACK, Nov 4: With ace tweaker Anil Kumble opting out of the match, left arm spinner Murali Kartik is very much in the frame for a place in the playing eleven in India’s crucial tri-nation cricket tie against New Zealand at the Barabati Stadium here on Thursday.

Kumble has decided against playing in the match here following the demise of his father K N Krishnaswamy.

"The team has expressed shock over Kumble’s bereavement. Our deepest sympathies are with his immediate family," Indian coach John Wright told reporters as the players arrived here from Bhubaneswar for nets at the stadium this afternoon.

Wright said "it would probably provide him (Kartik) an opportunity to play". He did a very good job against the West Indies last time and he had always done well when given a chance, he said.

Asked whether left-arm-medium pacer Asish Nehra, back in the team after a long injury-related lay-off, would play, the coach said he was bowling well in the nets and in contention for a place.

It’s good to have him back in the squad, he said.

Replying to a question as to whether there would be any change in the batting order in view of India’s poor performance against Australia in the previous match, he said it was the responsibility of the captain to decide.

The team would try to improve in all areas, Wright said adding it would concentrate on conceding less runs in the first 15 overs.

"If we play to our potential we’ll be very competitive," he said. Asked to comment on the batting of opener Virender Sehwag and Mohammed Kaif, the coach brushed aside their recent failures saying Sehwag is a match winner on his day while Kaif had played only one innings in the current series.

Wright said the Barabati pitch looked good for a one-day game.

Meanwhile, sources in the Orissa Cricket Association said all the tickets for the match had been sold out yesterday and some tickets meant for the pavilion and special enclosure were on sale today. (PTI)

Kumble would join the team for the November 12 match here against Australia, Nair said.

BCCI hits back at Fleming

BANGALORE, Nov 4: The Indian cricket board today hit back at Stephen Fleming for complaining about the scheduling of the ongoing triseries and said the Kiwi skipper should target his own board which had given consent to the itinerary.

BCCI secretary S K Nair told PTI over phone that New Zealand’s itinerary was finalised after protracted discussions with its cricket board. "He (Fleming) should ask his own board (about the scheduling)," he said.

Nair said the New Zealand board was supposed to consult its players regarding the tour programme.

Fleming was quoted as saying by a New Zealand website today that the scheduling was aimed to favour hosts India and criticised tournament organisers for making New Zealand and Australia play each other in day matches in difficult conditions.

Fleming also said that morning starts had ruined his team’s prospects in the triseries.(PTI)
