MD /MS aspirants' plea

Sir,

On behalf of a group of doctors aspiring in the forthcoming postgraduate entrance examination, I congratulate the authorities for issuing SRO 364 to streamline the M.D/M.S entrance examination system. The new SRO is in line with the admission policy of AIIMS, New Delhi and other leading postgraduate medical institutions of the country.

The entrance test, which had become a joke under the previous system, had deteriorated into an annual marriage and divorce exercise. Most of the selected candidates who joined diploma or degree courses kept their exit doors open, only to jump over to their specialities of choice after appearing in subsequent entrance tests. This way these doctors would mar the chances of their colleagues who would have lovingly pursued careers in those specialities.

Under the previous system, postgraduate training period was treated as a pastime interval. Unscrupulous doctors undergoing training courses were more interested in preparing for the next entrance test rather than studying the specialty in which they were enrolled by their own choice. In the process these doctors also managed to avoid rural postings by joining a series of postgraduate courses, using the back door of entrance tests.

I feel the new SRO shall plug most of the loopholes and safeguard the professional interests of doctors. I am sure that the SRO shall be instrumental (a) in injecting discipline in the process of selection; (b) in ensuring commitment on part of the selected doctors to adhere to the specialities opted by them; and (c) in saving recurring wastage of expenses incurred on unscrupulous doctors who leave their training courses midway.

The doctor community in general appreciates the spirit of the SRO and supports the efforts of the Government to streamline the postgraduate selection process.

Gazetted services-a Holy cow

Sir,

A letter in this column by Er. Pritam Singh forced me to ponder over my decision to burn mid night oil for achieving professional excellence and to join State Gazzetted service some 27 years ago. In 1996 the previous Govt. in order to pamper its employees announced in-situ promotions for completing every 9 years of service to every employee except the Gazetted cadre. It was surely a violation of one's fundamental rights as right to equality. Overnight mediocre were awarded with fat purses and pay arrears running into thousands. The Govt. thought the gazzetted people do not need money or higher scales because being a gazetted is panacea for all ills. I fail to understand why such injustice to this cadre. I am told by my friends in engineering department that diploma engineers are drawing more pay and higher scales than their bosses and degree engineers and are still non-gazetted. Even there is disparity in gazzetted service also.

Many gazzetted officers in Agriculture, Horticulture and Engineering are not getting even one promotion in whole service carrier and they need more than any body else at least one in-situ promotion. The present Govt. that has taken many bold initiatives is requested to at least consider the genuine demand of these employees and some suitable package be sanctioned in favour of State Gazetted Service.

Misuse of temple properties

Sir,

In some states, churches and mosques have been liberally encroaching Government lands. Also, Government doles out grants and aids to Christian and Muslim's educational institutions. As per soft Hindutva, State Governments have to control all the Hindu temples. Strangely, the moolah from these Hindu temples are diverted to the developments of mosques and churches. Hindu temples get back hardly twenty percent of the money from the temples for their development. The temple priests do not get their salaries regularly either. Some of them are in pathetic condition. These days leaders and ministers of such States are treating these Hindu temples and their resources as if it is their personal property. After looting all the money centres, temples have become a good "hunting ground"! Karnataka is a shining example.

If anybody has counts about the loot of temple lands and money, it is high time each State Government come with a white paper since Nehru's secularism came to India. Let this white paper also include the tree lands granted and the money from taxpayer to the churches and mosques.

Most of the Hindus are for Sri Ram temple at Ayodhya without delay; majority are against conversion by force, allurement or fraud; and majority are against police inaction during communal riots by the Islamic fundamentalists in Congress ruled States. To add insult to the injury, hardly ay cases are filed against Muslim rioters as in Kerala!
