Poor performance of Govt schools

Sir,

It has become customary for some people to heap blame for poor performance of Government schools on teachers. These so-called critics are not fully aware of the goings on in the schools. The poor performance has to be viewed in the light of different factors. Pointing out a single factor for this situation tantamounts to partial attitude of the critic. Teacher is only a single factor. He alone cannot change the situation.

In Rural areas primary schools usually function in two rooms buildings. There are five classes, in two rooms. Is not this space inadequate for the classes ? Now imagine, how would it become possible for a teacher to create congenial atmosphere for teaching.

Moreover, the two teachers deputed in school have to do other works as well. They have to do administrative works, to go to Zonal offices for salary and other official work. Does not this waste teacher's as well students time.

One can not also find peons in these schools. The sweeping work has to be done by the students themselves. Is this right atmosphere for studies.?

The premises of the primary school are usually used by the local people for grazing their cattle, gambling and for other social purposes also. During rains and summers, the situation becomes more difficult . You do not have fans, water, available in these schools.

Moreover, the students belong to poor and illiterate people. In education, it is essential that parents too are educated. Only then the objective of education can be obtained.

Girl child ratio

Sir,

Refere to the news item 'UN shocked at adverse girl child ratio in India, published in the Daily Excelsior on October, 30. The decline in sex ratio in the country is indeed a matter of concern. The situation is more appaling in the States of Haryana, Punjab, and Gujrat.

It quite clearly reflects that the Government in these States are not quite sensitive to women. In other words, it also means that pre-natal sex determination tests are carried out in these States despite a supreme court ruling against these tests.

It also reflects that the attitude of the society has not changed considerably. The girl child continues to be discriminated, and rejected. During Ramnavmi days, girls are propitiated, their feet are washed and money is offered to them but during the rest of year, they are subjected to bad treatment. Isn't it ironical? This is not true for a particular religion but for whole of the society in India.

In order to stop this practice, the Government should enforce the laws pertaining to it, honestly. Moreover, women have to take initiative in this regard. Unless women develop self respect for themselves, they are bound to suffer. They have to convince their partners the ill effects of such a practice. They will have to concentrate on the education of this child and make her self dependent. Once she will assumes power, she will feel secure and can face the challenges of life.

Doctors, religious preachers too have to play their role in this social affair. The doctor have to stop the role of murderers. For a petty amount they kill a person, isn't it a shame on their profession and the country they are serving. Doctor is regarded as next to God, he should therefore, keep the faith of the people in tact.

Dedicated to duty

Sir,

The general opinion, carried by public about the police department is not very positive. But my personal experience has a different story to tell. On 23rd Sep '03 my car was hit by a motor cyclist who was driving very rashly. My car was damaged despite any mistake of mine. When asked for compensating the loss the boy refused and ran away. However I had noted the bikes number. I called S S Samyal SHO Gandhinagar and told him about the incident. He himself came and surveyed the situation. It took him a month to locate the bike as it had been sold in many hands. Finally he made me meet the boys and they compensated for the loss.

Though it seems to be a small incident, but it is his dedication to the profession that he could make it. Officers with such honesty and high spirits will surely help in the betterment of society and teach such rash drivers a good lesson.

Police officers like S S Samyal and gem in the police deptt. and deserve due recognition.
