Prabhakar "torturing" his wife NEW DELHI, May 1: Manoj Prabhakar, the man who famously blew the lid off the match-fixing scandal in cricket before himself getting embroiled in it, continues to be dogged by controversy with his estranged wife today accusing him of "torturing" her "in collusion with a failed Bollywood actress". Already serving a five-year ban following match-fixing allegations and facing a possible prosecution for fraud, the former India all-rounder finds himself in fresh trouble with Sandhya Prabhakar, who married the cricketer in 1986, alleging that her husband had moved in with the "failed actress" in a flat in Faridabad. Sandhya also charged Manoj Prabhakar with cheating her and illegally removing her from the post of co-director of the company which the two of them had set up. Sandhya, who had filed a case of harassment against her husband and the actress in the womens cell of Delhi Police last year, said she had been "paying for the sins of Manoj Prabhakar" for long and had decided to "expose him" now. "I have supported him throughout and this is what I am getting in return. Ever since that actress has come into his life, he has completely neglected his family. He has tortured me physically and mentally and not spared our son either," she told PTI. "I have suffered all these years and now there is no option before me but to seek divorce. I want to start a new life." Despite repeated attempts to reach him for his version, Manoj Prabhakar was not available for comments. His office said he does not want to talk about the allegations. Rs 312 crore to be spend on sports infrastructure: Verma RATLAM (MP), May 1: Sports Minister Vikram Verma today said that Rs 312 crore would be spend on development of sports infrastructure. "Under the scheme every district in the country will have a sports complex. Half of the amount and land will be contributed by the State Governments,"Verma told reporters. "Centre will identify 150 Akharas and provide them with all modern facilities and selected wrestlers will be provided with a stipend of Rs 1,000,"he said. Replying to a question, he accepted that condition of sports in Madhya Pradesh was poor and Manipur was fast becoming a prime centre for sports in the country. "Due to the efforts of the Centre, Indian sportsmen have performed commendably in Commonwealth and Asian Games,"he added. On the possibility of resumption of cricketing ties between India and Pakistan, Mr Verma said, "there is no chance of it in the near future." Answering a question of MP politics, Mr Verma said, "the forthcoming elections in the state will be fought under the leadership of Ms Uma Bharati and BJP will form a Government in MP on its own." India begins hockey preparations for Olympics BANGALORE, May 1: India has begun preparations for next years Athens Olympics in right earnest and national coach Rajinder Singh believes that the Asian style of attacking hockey will be the key to success. The Indian probables kicked off today a month-long training camp for the double leg May 28 to June eight Invitational Hockey Tournament, involving India, Pakistan, Australia, Australia A at Perth and Sydney. "My main aim (at the camp) is to prepare and build a team for Olympics qualifying and Olympics," Rajinder Singh, himself an Olympian, told PTI here in an interview. He said senior players Mukesh Kumar, Baljeet Singh Dhillon, Baljit Singh Saini and Dhanraj Pillay had been called to the camp to see if they could carry on till after the Olympic Games next year. The qualifiers would be held in Madrid next march. "They want to play more hockey and we have to give them a chance. If they are able to play for the nation, we should welcome them," he said of the seniors. "I will observe them for 15 to 20 days. I would like them to play at least one international match to see how they perform and also observe their fitness level. (their) selection would be purely based on performance and fitness level. Age will not be a consideration at all," Singh added. Rajinder Singh said the reverses suffered by India prior to his taking over as coach about a year ago could be primarily attributed to the team adopting a European style of `mix approach and giving up the attacking Asian 5-3-2-1 format. "Earlier, we played a different style that does not suit Indian players," he said but emphasised that for India to beat European teams, who are good at penalty corner conversions, goal-keeping and hit-and-run, it must adopt an attacking style. "That is the only way we can beat European teams. We cannot beat them by adopting European style," the Indian coach said. "Now, we are adopting the Indian style. The boys are happy. This is the way they played hockey through the years." Rajinder Singh, who was the coach of the Indian junior team which won the World Cup, said he was adopting the same recipe for success at the senior level by focusing on short-corner conversions, defending, goal-keeping and improving conversion rate of field goals. "In the junior World Cup, we were getting goals only from short-corner conversions," Rajinder Singh said adding "we are putting in a lot of effort on our weaker areas like goal keeping and conversion rate". Another area of concern for the coach is the midfield, where he has only new players to depend on. It is this area that he would like to strengthen with seasoned campaigner Baljit Saini. (PTI) |

LONDON, May 1: Cricket bible Wisden has devoted special space to Sachin Tendulkar in its latest issue, eulogising the Indian batting genius for being "miles ahead" of his contemporaries and continuing to "write an elegant, belligerent and unprecedented history". "Sachin is now 30. But to the world, and to India in particular, he is still a boy wonder," Wisden cricketers Almanack 2003 said in its separate write up on Tendulkar -"batting for a billion". "Thirteen years and 105 tests have passed since he first took guard at Karachi in November 1989, but the poets son with the almost-falsetto voice and the supremely dignified manner continues to write an elegant, belligerent and unprecedented history," Rohit Brijnath said in the article. The write-up says though Tendulkar cannot be the greatest batsman ever in history, "in tests and one-dayers together, the reality of international cricket today, Tendulkar will take some catching too". "Tendulkar will never be the greatest batsman in history; that seat is taken. But as much as Donald Bradmans test average (99.94) outstrips Tendulkars (57.58), the gap diminishes substantially when other factors are taken into account. "Tendulkar travels more in a year than Bradman did in a decade; he has had to manage the varying conditions of 49 test grounds, to Bradmans ten; he has already played twice as many tests as Bradman, and over 300 one-day games, nearly all of them under the unrelenting scrutiny of television. And whereas Bradman had to cope with the expectations of a small populace, not given to idolatry, in an age of restraint, Tendulkar must play god to one billion expectant worshippers." (PTI) Haryana beat Jharkhand in U-19 PANCHKULA, May 1: The junior Haryana women cricket team today defeated Jharkhand by 82 runs in the opening match of the four-day Junior National Womens under-19 Cricket Championship here today. (UNI) DHAKA, May 1: Mohammad Rafique helped Bangladesh give a rare fighting display as South Africa scored 264 for six on the opening day of the second Test at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here today. The 32-year-old left-arm spinner took four for 59 as Bangladesh looked to redeem itself after going down by an innings and 60 runs in the first test, their 17th loss in 18 matches since gaining test status.
