MUMBAI, May 1 : Breaking ranks more than 35 Air India pilots, owing allegiance to the now derecognised Indian Pilots Guild, have reported for duty, the airline said today. "We have 25 pilots who have reported for duty and rostered for flights yesterday and 10 more have joined today. The number is slowly increasing", Air-Indias public relations director Jitender Bhargava said here. Capt Vikrant Sansare, general secretary of IPG which is spearheading a week-long agitation on the SARS issue, admitted that 20 pilots, who were part of a breakaway group, have left the Guild and reported for duty. "They have been in and out of IPG", he added. Air-India is also seeking to hire nearly 40 pilots of Indian origin, presently laid off by foreign airlines in the far east, on a short-term contract basis for its Boeing 747-400 and A310 aircraft. The availability of these pilots will depend on the foreign carriers releasing them, the sources said. The airline is more keen to keep its A310 aircraft flying, specially to the Gulf region as presently only 50 per cent of the services are being operated. Meanwhile, an A-I spokesman in a statement said when the issue of SARS was first discussed last month with various associations and unions, the IPG had stayed away from the meeting. "When there is no requirement of a health certificate on flights operated within the country, why has this certificate then been insisted upon on domestic flights and flights abandoned within India on denial of certificate", he asked. He pointed out that the general declaration form is required to be signed by the pilot in command. As most IPG members are co-pilots, they therefore have nothing to do with the general declaration form, he added. The airline today put into effect a three day revised flight schedule and plans to operate three additional flights to the Gulf region tomorrow. (PTI) |
Hyundai keen to export cars to Pak, Afghan and CIS countries NEW DELHI, May 1: Leading car maker Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) is willing to export cars to Pakistan, Afghanistan and CIS countries in the event of trade commencing between India and Pakistan through road in the near future. "We are watching political developments and hope to enter these markets in the long run," Mr Bong Gou (Bernardo) Lee, Executive Director of Hyundai Motors told UNI. He said these markets, particularly Afghanistan with no production base, have huge potential for our cars. Mr Lee said that the HMILs parent company Hyundai Motors in collaboration with a local businessman was manufacturing around 500 cars every month in Pakistan. The Indian arm of Korea-based Hyundai Motors wants to enhance sales and use the Indian production base, which has the potential to produce 2.5 lakh cars in the next year, for exporting to the new markets. The current year production at the Indian base would be 1.5 lakh units, he added. As a business strategy to increase production of Indian unit, Hyundai Motors has decided to export bulk production from the Indian operation to EU countries as well as neighboring countries including Pakistan and CIS nations. The HMIL has plans to export more than 30,000 vehicles this year as against 8,300 units in the previous year, most of this to the EU countries. At present, Hyundai Motors is exporting its vehicles to nine countries including Nepal and Sri Lanka. "sale of cars to EU countries will be done through existing network of the parent company," Mr Lee said. In the long-run, the HMIL plans to export around 30 per cent of its production.(UNI) |
Bank unions threaten to go on strike today NEW DELHI, May 1: Leading bank unions today threatened to go on a nationwide strike tomorrow if Government did not meet their demands including an early wage revision. The national organisation of bank officers claim more than 2.5 lakh members would go on a nation-wide strike tomorrow, as Government has failed to resolve any of the issues raised by the organisation despite coming to an understanding with them last year. Issues like recruitment and promotion policies, disciplinary proceedings and relief to officers due to the impact of VRS have remain unresolved, Nobo, an affiliate to BJPs Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh, said in a statement. Demanding early wage revision and reduction in interest rate on staff loans, Nobo said Government discriminates between its own employees and the bank staff in income tax perquisites and the centre should make efforts to bring it to an end. All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA) expressed their solidarity for the strike. AIBOA resented the growing attack on trade unions in different banks and the general tendency to by-pass unions, the statement said. All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) would also participate in the day-long token strike. (PTI) |

The rating takes into consideration the strong liquidity of the company, which is provided to it by a large liquid investment portfolio and stable operational ash flows. resolve NEW DELHI, May 1: Union Food Minister Sharad Yadav has convened a high-level meeting to break the millers-farmers deadlock over payment of sugarcane dues and to discuss the matter threadbare with the Uttar Pradesh Government. "A meeting has been scheduled for May 4 to address the woes of farmers and millers at the same time. Those invited include Agriculture Minister Ajit Singh and UP Chief Minister Mayawati," Yadav said here. He said Law Minister Arun Jaitley and up Sugarcane Minister, Premlata Katiyar will also be attending the meeting which will discuss all aspects relating to the current crisis. Last Sunday, Mayawati had met Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and demanded that States be empowered to ensure that the State Advised Price (SAP) of cane was paid by sugar millers to the poor farmers. The Centre fixes the Statutory Minimum Price (SMP) of cane every year which at Rs 69.50 per quintal on basic recovery of 8.5 per cent is lower than UPs sap of Rs 95 per quintal. Millers, however, have obtained a stay from the Allahabad High Court on implementation of the SAP and also filed petitions in four High Courts against what they call arbitrary mid-season hike in SMP by the Centre by Rs five per quintal in December last year. Millers have expressed their inability to pay higher cane price due to low sugar prices but Government has contended that the Bearish market is the result of their flouting the monthly release mechanism. To prevent mills from offloading additional sugar in the market through Court orders, the Centre has decided to place the release mechanism under the ninth schedule of the Constitution making it non-justiciable. (PTI) TTSL rings in a range of super saver telecom tariffs NEW DELHI, May 1: Tata Teleservices Limiteds (TTSL) CDMA mobile customers can now make calls to another CDMA user anywhere in the country at 55 paise per minute. The newly released rates of Tata Teleservices, which begins today, for its CDMA mobile and fixed line services operational in both metro and non metro circles includes the new "super saver" tariffs. For a customers easy understanding, all new tariff plans of TTSL, be it for CDMA mobile or landline services, have been named based on the monthly commitment a customer would be comfortable to pay while using a particular telecom service. Keeping this in mind TTSL released 4 new tariff plans for its CDMA mobile services plan 295, plan 450, plan 599 and plan 999. Similarly for its landline services, TTSL has provided its customers the power to choose from 6 new tariff plans based on their usage pattern plan 250, plan 499, plan 725, plan 999, plan 1500 and plan 2250. While announcing the new telecom tariffs, Mr S Ramakrishnan, Managing Director, Tata Teleservices Limited, said: "TTSLs new range of tariffs have been made available after undertaking extensive user profile studies of both our existing and potential customers." TTSLs CDMA mobile customers now can make free local and STD calls for the first 400 minutes on most tariff plans across networks to other CDMA mobile users. Companys new fixed line tariffs are designed in a manner so that customers can talk upto twice the time for the same charges when calling to GSM or CDMA phones, in comparison to competitors. Meanwhile the cellular industry has welcomed the introduction of free incoming calls for its customers. Mr T V Ramachandran, Director General COAI stated this measure was a historic step in Indias liberalization process, as it would help to tap the real potential of telecom and lead to increased penetration of telecom services throughout the country. He said that this measure was long overdue especially for cellular consumers who were being uniquely disadvantaged by the regulatory regime to be the only subscribers to have to pay for incoming calls. Mr Ramachandran said that a uniform one-way payment regime for all telecom consumers would level the playing field between all competitive telecom services leading to fair competition and the orderly growth of the telecom sector. With cellular tariffs having plunged to rock-bottom levels and with mobile handsets available for as little as Rs 2,000 and prepaid cards for as little as Rs 200 per month, it is hoped that this step of free incoming calls will remove the last perceptible barrier for consumers to take up and all the benefits of anytime, anywhere access with cellular mobility. (UNI) Govt pursuing faulty PDS policy: Oppn NEW DELHI, Apr 30: The opposition today launched a scathing attack on Government in the Rajya Sabha accusing it of pursuing a "faulty" Public Distribution System (PDS) policy resulting in malnutrition and starvation deaths despite huge stocks of foodgrains in FCI godowns. Charging the Government with failing to discharge its responsibility to meet the needs of the poor people, opposition members said even mid-day meal scheme for school children had suffered hiccups due to non-availability of funds in this key area. Initiating a discussion on a calling attention motion on PDS, Congress member Suresh Pachouri regretted that sub-standard ration was supplied by FCI and wheat had been given to North-Eastern States where the staple food was rice. He quoted remarks made by Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the Supreme Court and the CAG to say that severe lacunae existed in the PDS which needed urgent attention of the Government. During the course of the debate, Deputy Chairperson Najma Heptulla pointed out that instead of rats eating foodgrains in godowns, they could be given to the needy. Responding to members concern, Food Miniser Sharad Yadav admitted that the mid-day meal had faced some problems but asserted it was now running smoothly. Pachouri and a Vijayaraghavan (CPL-M) demanded that the centre should immediately convene a meeting of Chief Ministers to ensure that poverty-sticken people were provided foodgrains at affordable prices. (PTI) Swadeshi Jagran Manch for mass movement against WTO AHMEDABAD, May 1: Swadeshi Jagran Manch national committee member K N Govindacharya today called for a mass movement to pressurise the Government to change those rules under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) which were against Indian interests. Addressing public meetings here on the culmination of two yatras, which started simultaneously from Porbandar and Dandi on April 20, Mr Govindacharya said it was time the Government decided whether or not to stay with WTO and the strategy for the next round of negotiations. "We are not yet aware as to what would happen to India after the post-patent regime comes into force from January 2005. Let there be debate and mass campaigns. Only then, national interests be preserved," he added. WTO-dictated rules favouring globalisation and liberalisation suited American interests. "They consider 30 per cent of Indias population (the haves) as their market while the remaining (the have-nots) are pain in the neck," Mr Govindacharya said. He said, "the nation is strong, the state is weak. The nation is confident the state is not sure. India can stand alone as 80 per cent of its economy is locally dependent, fulfilling its needs from within the district. It is the world that needs India and not vice versa." "It is only America which intends to spread its unipolar designs all over the world, like the vegetables should come to the USA from South America, meat from Africa from countries like Sudan, wines from select places in Europe, cereals from whichever country and pleasure from South East Asia," he said. The former BJP general secretary said successive Governments in the past, including those headed by Narasimha Rao, Rajiv Gandhi, Deve Gowda, I K Gujaral and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, had bowed down to the Western pressure tactics. "The NDA Government tried a little to save the countrys interest at Doha. But all the contentious issues have been kept pending for the next round of negotiations. (UNI) |
