No room for complacency

Sir,

Kudos to the Indian Team for winning their last league match of world cup from the traditional and arch rival Pakistan in a sensational fashion. The foundation for victory was artistically and powerfully laid by Indian Dare Devils Sachin & Sehwag in the initial overs. After two early severe blows in the shape of wickets of Veeru & Ganguly, Innings were established by useful partnership of young & confident Mohd. Kaif & The Master Blaster Tendulkar.

Unfortunately, Sachin suffered hamstring injury and could not complete his century, missing it by just two runs. But his consistency and immaculate hitting had made the match comparatively easy for the remaining batsman.

Rahul Dravid & lion hearted Yuvraj played excellent innings and frustrated the bowling assault of Pakistan. There was high -pitched jubilation throughout the length & breadth of the country. There was a Diwali like celebration in the country. Emotions & patriotic fervour was on display. People were excited to the hilt and extremely exalted. Rejoicing and exhibition of Nationalism by the Indians in the Stadium and one billion people at home is fine but there should be no room for complacency for the team. The remaining matches would be more challenging & demanding. People at home have high expectations. There are few lessons to be learnt from this game.

i) Play with killer instinct.

ii) Aggression is best defence.

iii) Team spirit is essential.

iv) Confidence to win.

Sachin & Veeru's strategy was commendable and well suited to the situation. They compelled Pakistan captain to turn focus from aggressive bowling to defensive bowling. There is a lesson for our politicians as well. Pak sponsored terrorism can be eliminated by aggressive counter terrorism and not by spineless political moves.

Ban polythene bags

Sir,

At this crucial juncture when pollution is reaching on top in different areas, the people of our country are making liberal use of polythene bags and many other plastic goods.

Large chunk of population donot understand consequences of using polythene bags and other plastic goods. They are doing so to maintain their aristocratic life style. Perhaps they have scant knowledge that this aristocracy would lead them into abysmal sea of pollution and a den of hydra-headed monster.

The profuse and indiscriminate use of polythene bags and other plastic goods not only cause disturbance in the eco-system because of their non Bio-degradable nature but also make a dent into the fertility of soil, pollute the goods contained in them, cause contamination of drinking water, have the potential to cause serious and irreversible chocking of rivers and drainage system of the cities, can also cause pollution of seas and can be instrumental in raising the sea level.

Many sensible foreign nations have slapped ban on the production and use of polythene containers and plastic goods but contrarily such goods and being used indiscriminately in our country. Whenever we move around, the polythene products are seen scattered and littered everywhere.

River Tawi appears to be a dumping ground for polythene bags and other plastic goods. People are in the habit of throwing the residual waste of religious ceremonies performed at their residence in the Tawi packed in polythene bags.

These small acts are going to lead us into a major catastrophe in the years to come. This is time to think and act. Govt should do its duty. Impose ban on polythene bags. Production should be stopped. We have to rise above the vote politics in the interest of the humanity as a whole. We have to save our Eco-system and natural resources for the well being of our progeny.

Apart from the Govt. every sensible individual has his own duty. Take a pledge to forego the use of polythene containers. Instead we can look for other alternatives. We can switch over to cloth made containers which our parents and grandparents had been using in our childhood.

NGO's can play a vital role in this noble cause by educating the people about the dangers of polythene. Educational Institutions can also make a significant contribution by motivating the young scholars.

Sands of time

Sir,

The frail figure silhouetted against the shadows cast by the setting sun, evoked faint memories from my childhood. I remembered my grandfather tall and distinguished, in those crisp white trousers, detachable collars, all so typical of those colonial times. He had come a long way as a young lad from Sialkot, which was then an integral part of India. He had turned ninety-four this year and the decade etched in those wrinkled face and knar led fingers. Life had come a full circle for him. The faded iris held reflections of the long journey and now they gazed aimlessly, sometimes into oblivion and then at those autumn leaves that would glide down and silently settle down to become a part of the earth. Lying there without an epitaph. I sat there quietly following his gaze and was greatly to nature for the decimation of his hearing faculties. It evaded so much hurt and disappointment. The cruel bitter words of rejection were only equivocal world from far away. The little smile that played at his lips was only sign left of a heart that lived for another day, taking pleasure in the sight of his dear ones, for whom he once ran from pillar to post to fulfill the needs of those who now no more needed him. I wonder how far is the old peoples home a logical end to an era. only cowards insult the dying majesty!

Faulty evaluation system

Sir,

Kind and generous attention of the Vice-Chancellor, Controller of Examinations, University of Jammu is drawn towards the evaluation System of various University examinations including M.Ed. Examination adopted/ conducted by the Jammu University which seems to be faulty which is quite evident from the recently declared M.Ed. Ist Semester Exam. result (Session 2001) held in (July-August 2002) wherein maximum No. of candidates have been shown re-appear either in Ed-1 (Philosophical Foundations of Education) or Ed-3 (Educational statics) who are successful in respect of the three courses and these candidates are not totally satisfied with Evaluation System for which these candidates have been compelled to go in for Re-evaluation as they themselves are quite sure of fairing very well in this course/courses.

The first fault that lies in the Evaluation system of various examinations of Jammu University is that since the "Answer Book" contains "Name and Parentage" column of the candidate which gives chances to loose secrecy and there is every apprehension of losing transparency and adoption of various "Isms" in the Evaluation. So this practice should be done away with.

The second fault is that the code No. Fictitious R. No. system is not adopted and name and parentage etc. not removed or kept concealed from the Answer Books.

The third fault is that it has been observed that only those students who cram and quote definations etc. in dito are awarded good marks but those who write and express themselves in their own words or give examples with day to day life needed situations etc. are thought as in -efficient and awarded less marks. Therefore, evaluators should be instructed to award marks as per accuracy of the statement.

The fourth fault is that there are reports that the Evolutions take the answer books to their residential quarters or even outside the University Campus for Evaluation which does not suit good. This needs a proper check and "an evaluation Centre Hall" be selected within the campus.

Hope, the matter is looked into with interests by the Vice Chancellor, Controller of Examinations University of Jammu and the needful done immediately in the interests of thousands of innocent examinees and the revaluation done through at least to evaluators-examiners to do justice with examinees at an earliest, so that we may not suffer more for no fault on our part.
