Sands
of time
Sir,
The frail
figure silhouetted against the shadows
cast by the setting sun, evoked faint
memories from my childhood. I remembered
my grandfather tall and distinguished, in
those crisp white trousers, detachable
collars, all so typical of those colonial
times. He had come a long way as a young
lad from Sialkot, which was then an
integral part of India. He had turned
ninety-four this year and the decade
etched in those wrinkled face and knar
led fingers. Life had come a full circle
for him. The faded iris held reflections
of the long journey and now they gazed
aimlessly, sometimes into oblivion and
then at those autumn leaves that would
glide down and silently settle down to
become a part of the earth. Lying there
without an epitaph. I sat there quietly
following his gaze and was greatly to
nature for the decimation of his hearing
faculties. It evaded so much hurt and
disappointment. The cruel bitter words of
rejection were only equivocal world from
far away. The little smile that played at
his lips was only sign left of a heart
that lived for another day, taking
pleasure in the sight of his dear ones,
for whom he once ran from pillar to post
to fulfill the needs of those who now no
more needed him. I wonder how far is the
old peoples home a logical end to an era.
only cowards insult the dying majesty!

Faulty
evaluation system
Sir,
Kind and
generous attention of the
Vice-Chancellor, Controller of
Examinations, University of Jammu is
drawn towards the evaluation System of
various University examinations including
M.Ed. Examination adopted/ conducted by
the Jammu University which seems to be
faulty which is quite evident from the
recently declared M.Ed. Ist Semester
Exam. result (Session 2001) held in
(July-August 2002) wherein maximum No. of
candidates have been shown re-appear
either in Ed-1 (Philosophical Foundations
of Education) or Ed-3 (Educational
statics) who are successful in respect of
the three courses and these candidates
are not totally satisfied with Evaluation
System for which these candidates have
been compelled to go in for Re-evaluation
as they themselves are quite sure of
fairing very well in this course/courses.
The first
fault that lies in the Evaluation system
of various examinations of Jammu
University is that since the "Answer
Book" contains "Name and
Parentage" column of the candidate
which gives chances to loose secrecy and
there is every apprehension of losing
transparency and adoption of various
"Isms" in the Evaluation. So
this practice should be done away with.
The second
fault is that the code No. Fictitious R.
No. system is not adopted and name and
parentage etc. not removed or kept
concealed from the Answer Books.
The third
fault is that it has been observed that
only those students who cram and quote
definations etc. in dito are awarded good
marks but those who write and express
themselves in their own words or give
examples with day to day life needed
situations etc. are thought as in
-efficient and awarded less marks.
Therefore, evaluators should be
instructed to award marks as per accuracy
of the statement.
The fourth
fault is that there are reports that the
Evolutions take the answer books to their
residential quarters or even outside the
University Campus for Evaluation which
does not suit good. This needs a proper
check and "an evaluation Centre
Hall" be selected within the campus.
Hope, the
matter is looked into with interests by
the Vice Chancellor, Controller of
Examinations University of Jammu and the
needful done immediately in the interests
of thousands of innocent examinees and
the revaluation done through at least to
evaluators-examiners to do justice with
examinees at an earliest, so that we may
not suffer more for no fault on our part.
Yours
etc...
