By Sanjeev Pargal & Dinesh Manhotra JAMMU, June 28: In the worst ever fidayeen attack on an army installation, two militants struck at Dogra Regiments camp in early hours of this morning at Sunjwan along Narwal by-pass killing 12 army soldiers and wounding seven others including a Lieutenant before being eliminated by the troops. Death toll of army could go up as condition of two army personnel, who were airlifted to Military Hospital in Udhampur this evening, was stated to be serious. Defence authorities maintained a silence on the fidayeen attack refusing to share details with the media except for admitting that 12 army soldiers were killed in the attack and seven others were injured. Both the fidayeens were eliminated in over three hours operation. Two militants, who were wearing army uniforms, sneaked into the army camp that was spread in a vast area, from back side taking cover of the grown up sarkanda grass at about 0430 hours today. Sentries on the guard duty at main gate of the camp couldnt detect movement of the militants. The militants targeted a double storey Barrack-A, where the army jawans were taking sleep, albeit their target appeared to be the residential quarters of army personnel which were about 300 meters away from the barrack. While one of the militants entered inside the ground floor barrack and started indiscriminate firing on the sleeping army jawans with an AK rifle, the second militant took position outside the barrack. Brigade Commander JS Thind said that the two militants had taken shelter in sarkanda area to enter into the military station, which also houses a Brigade Headquarters, a major training station and multi-storied staff quarters. The army jawans inside the barrack were without weapons as generally before going to sleep, the jawans used to deposit their weapons. In the meantime, the army soldiers sleeping on first floor of the barrack jumped down and went to the strong room to take their weapons. But by that time, according to sources, the fidayeen, who had forced his entry inside the barrack, wreaked havoc killing and injuring a number of army jawans. As the other army jawans came into action after taking their arms, the militant, who had taken position outside the barrack, was eliminated at about 0600 hours. Troops then cordoned off the barrack and strengthened security outside the armys residential quarters. The militant inside the barrack was killed at about 0800 hours. Soon after the encounter, a bomb disposal squad carried out extensive sanitisation of the entire area near barracks and defused three grenades thrown by the militants. Two AK-47 rifles with Pakistani markings and carrying LeT symbols besides 13 magazines, 470 rounds, 23 grenades, some explosive material and Rs 1800 Pakistani currency were recovered from the militants, the sources said. The barrack, where army suffered maximum casualties, was extensively damaged in the exchange of firing. Some explosive devices were reported to have been used by army in killing the holed-up militant in the barrack which was evident from the sound of explosions heard outside by the civilians and the media persons, who had gathered outside the army camp. Army kept the entire operation a top secret. The media persons of both electronic and print media, who had gathered in a large number outside the camp, were barred from entering inside. Even Armys Public Relations Officer (PRO) Lt. Col Bhanwar Rathore expressed his helplessness in briefing the media adequately. Minister of State for Defence Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 16 Corps T P S Brar, GOC Tiger Division, Rajinder Singh and DIG Jammu-Kathua range Farooq Ahmed visited the army camp for reviewing the situation after the fidayeen attack. Identity of the slain militants couldnt be established but an intercept said one of them could be Abu Hurera (code name). Both of them were belived to be Pakistanis. Significantly, a United Nations Observer, Jees Musegaard also visited the site of fidayeen attack. When asked by EXCELSIOR correspondent outside the army camp about the purpose of his visit, the UN observer said he had just come to have a first hand information of the attack and inform the same to his seniors. He was also seen meeting some army officers inside the army camp to share information on the attack. Sources opined that the fidayeens, in all probability, had planned to strike at the army residential quarters in a replica of Kaluchak incident of May 14 last year wherein they had killed over 35 family members of the army personnel. In that attack, only four army personnel were killed. Sunjwan incident was probably the worst ever fidayeen attack in Jammu as far as the casualties of the army personnel were concerned. Defence authorities declined to disclose identity of the jawans killed in the militant attack. However, they said, one Lieutenant was among the seven injured army personnel, who were shifted to the Military Hospital in Satwari. Later, two of them were airlifted to Military Hospital, Udhampur in view of their critical condition. Bodies of the jawans were also secretly shifted to the Military Hospital in Satwari and were in the process of being shifted to their houses. Todays fidayeen attack in Jammu came after a gap of about seven months. Last fidayeen attack had taken place simultaneously in Ragunath and Panjbakhtar temples wherein about a dozen people including three security personnel were killed on November 24 last year. An army jawan, who carried the injured to army hospital, apprehended that the militants might have entered the army camp after jumping the boundary wall. "There was adequate security on the entrance of the camp so it was not possible for the militants to pierce through that security cover. " Taking advantage of the darkness, the militants might have made their entry after jumping over from boundary wall, he said. "For quite some time it was virtual chaos and confusion and we were not aware of the militant attack", he added. Residents of Sunjwan too were not aware of the militant attack. "I was thinking that soldiers were practicing so we took it lightly", said Bashir Ahmed. "It was after about half an hour of heavy firing when we came to know that the militants have attacked the army camp, he said. Meanwhile, apprehending more suicide attacks, army today put all its units in the State on high alert and announced that anti-militancy sweeps throughout the State would be stepped up. Army sources said that according to preliminary reports the two militants who had carried out the suicide attack had crossed the border within the last 48 hours with specific instructions to carry out big fidayeen strikes. Army spokesman Brig Shruti Kant told Excelsior on telephone from New Delhi that "leads on the militants and their linkages are being followed up". The militants, he said, entered the army camp dressed in army uniform and followed the pattern of May 14, 2002 attack on army barracks at Kaluchak when 35 family members of jawans were slain. Though intelligence reports had warned of such attacks, Brig Shruti Kant said that tall sarkanda grass around the Sunjwan camp had prevented the detection of militants. Army have now ordered cutting of all such growth near cantonment areas and army border camps. The spokesman said post operation Sarp Vinash launched to flush militants from their hideouts in the Surankote heights has now been widened with similar smaller scale operations being undertaken in other areas of Doda. Army sources said that militants were increasingly taking to crossing of the International Border between Pathankot and Jammu, as deployment along the Line of Control was heavy with a number of sensitive sensors put in place. " Though nearly 58 kms of the 98 kms long Jammu -Pathankot sector has been fenced, the militants still manage to sneak in from the areas where the fencing has still to be undertaken", sources said. According to official estimates, the entire stretch of the International Border would be fenced by the end of next year. Top army officials said that heavy firing by Pakistani Rangers was delaying the fencing work. The army simultaneously is undertaking fencing work on vulnerable stretches of Line of Control between Rajouri and Poonch sectors. Over 5,000 army engineers are engaged in constructing the electric fencing about six to eight miles inside Indian territory and already a 68 kms stretch has been fenced. Sunjwan village, where the militants struck early today, had earlier also been in news for some militancy-related cases. A Pakistani militant was arrested from Sunjwan last year who had managed to obtain a state subject and purchased a plot for erecting a house. Later, four harbourers of the militants were also arrested from Sunjwan. They had given shelter to two Pakistani militants, who had executed the massacre of 32 civilians at Rajiv Nagar on July 13 last year. The Pakistani militants, involved in the killings, had also taken shelter at Raika forests, near Sunjwan, where one of them was killed and another apprehended. Prior to that, the Special Operations Group (SOG), Jammu had apprehended a hardcore militant, hailing from Doda, from near the residence of the then Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah. Despite such a number of incidents, no major search operation was launched either by the security forces or by the police to flush out the militants, reliable sources said. Meanwhile, the sources pointed out, the sale of army uniforms was another factor which facilitated the fidayeen attacks. Despite a ban imposed on the sale of army uniforms by the district administration, such uniforms are readily available in several markets in Jammu, they said. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has strongly condemned militants pre-dawn attack on army camp at Sunjwan killing 12 jawans. In a message, the Chief Minister said that perpetrators of violence appear to be frustrated at the peoples yearning for peace, which has given turn around to the situation. By targeting the camps, they have once again proved that their only objective is to shed blood and create terror, unmindful of the larger interests of the people of the State. Incident coming at a stage when India and Pakistan are moving step-by-step towards lasting peace in the sub-continent, it is highly despicable. No right thinking person can ever approve any senseless act, he added and conveyed his personal condolences to the bereaved families. |

Prays for peace at Hazratbal Happiness of J&K depends on peace: Kalam Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, June 28: President, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, has tremendous faith in the power of prayer. Any doubts, in this regard, have, once again, been set at rest by the President himself. Soon after his arrival in Jammu on June 26 on a three-day visit to the border State, Dr Kalam demonstrated his love and urge as well to kneel in prayer. If it was the cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi for the Missile Man of India in Jammu region on Thursday (June 26), the famous Muslim shrine of Hazratbal in Srinagar became the venue for his prayer on Saturday, on the eve of his return to the Indian capital. And his prayer at both the places of worship was for peace for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Indeed, Dr Kalam was blunt in his expression, leaving none in doubt about his prayer at the Hazratbal shrine for return of normalcy in J&K. Hazratbal shrine has tremendous importance for its possession of Prophet Mohammeds holy relic. Dr Kalam described the Prophet as "a man of peace" and said: "Islam is a religion of peace". As the mechanised boat carrying the First Citizen of the country touched the bank of the Dal Lake, a large number of people waiting for the President there cheered him welcome. He reciprocated by waving hands. The boat journey started from the Chashmashahi ghat. It took 15 minutes for the President to reach the shrine. The shrine is the most revered religious centre here. The shrine is known by many names, including Asaare Sharief, Madinat-u-Sani and Dargah. The history of the shrine dates back to the 17th century when the Subedar of the Mughal Emperor, Shahjehan, laid out a garden here and constructed a palatial building called Ishrat Mahal in 1623. However, the Emperor, during his visit to the Valley in 1634, ordered the conversion of the building into a prayer house with some additions and alterations. It was during the period of Aurangzeb that the Prophets holy relic arrived in Kashmir (in 1699). The construction of the present marble shrine complex was started in 1968 by the Muslim Auqaf Trust and completed in 1979. The expenditure on the construction of the complex including the mosque is Rs 50 crore till date. In his speech at the shrine after having deedar (glimpse) of the holy relic, the President said: "Prophet Mohammed also preached peace in the world. Let the peace come to all of us". Added Dr Kalam: "When peace comes, people in Jammu and Kashmir will have happiness". He quoted verses from the Quran and stressed on the secular aspects of Islam. He had this message: "What you do you are responsible for it; what I do I am responsible for it". "When I entered the Hazratbal shrine, I got inspired... I got divine feelings", he said. Dr Kalam said that India had a great tradition of peace-lovers from Ashoka the Great onwards. He hoped that peace and development would return to the trouble-torn State of Jammu and Kashmir. The President informed the audience that Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, Chief Minister, had promised to convert the most revered shrine of the State into a full-fledged heritage centre. The shrine is, at present, managed by Muslim Auqaf Trust (MAT), headed by Farooq Abdullah. Dr Kalam, who arrived at the shrine via Dal Lake, was given a warm reception by the management of the Trust. A Karakul cap was presented to him, besides a Kashmiri shawl and an artists impression of the shrine. The shrines priest, Bashir Ahmed Farooqi, while welcoming the President, hoped that he (Dr Kalam) would lead the country to development and resolve the Babri Masjid issue. The priest said: "We hope that under his leadership the minorities are protected. Babri Masjid issue will be resolved and lasting peace will return to Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh". The President, during his motor-launch drive to the shrine, was accompanied by Governor, Gen. (Retd) SK Sinha and Chief Minister, Mufti Sayeed. The security personnel deployed for the Presidents engagements were taken aback when Dr Kalam decided at the last minute to meet the local people instead of embarking on the secured enclosure. |
Geelani's ultimatum to Hurriyat SRINAGAR, June 28: Fire-brand Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani today renewed his demand for expulsion of Peoples Conference from the Hurriyat Conference and served an ultimatum on the separatist amalgam to do so within a week or face the formation of an alternative to it. "Participants in the September 2002 Assembly elections and those who did not launch campaign against the polls are the biggest traitors," Geelani said winding up a three-hour meeting of like-minded separatist leaders at his Hyderpora residence here this evening. He rejected the contention of Hurriyat chairman Abdul Gani Bhat that those who deserted Hurriyat would be traitors. He said "now the ball is in the court of Hurriyat. If it expels Peoples Conference at this moment, Hurriyat wins the first round. We are ready to extend our support to Hurriyat afresh." However, he said the final decision regarding formation of an alternative to the Hurriyat would be taken within four days and the announcement regarding its formation would be made at a meet-the-people campaign being launched by him at Sopore on July 4, he said. The separatist leaders and activists discussed for over three hours the possibility of forming an alternative to the Hurriyat Conference or force it to mend its ways, sources said. Majority of the activists were in favour of formation of an alternative and some even suggested to change the nomenclature of the separatist amalgam to Jammu and Kashmir Hurriyat Conference, the sources said. Prominent among the 100 activists of different constituents of Hurriyat Conference who attended the meeting were: Ghulam Ahmad Gulzar of Ghulam Nabi Hubby-led Peoples Conference, vice-president of Muslim Conference, Ghulam Nabi Sumji, president of Anjuman-e-Shari-Shian Aga Syed Hassan, Pir Hissamuddin of Jamaat-e-Islami, Saidullah Tantray of Kashmir Freedom Movement, Ghulam Mohammad Khan Sopori of Peoples League (Rehmani group), Mansoor Gazi of Sheikh Abdul Aziz-led Peoples League, Advocate Mohammad Amin of Kashmir Bar Association, and chairman of Kashmir Political Conference Abdul Ahad Bhat. Pistol symbolising Pak defeat stolen from national museum NEW DELHI, June 28: A pistol symbolising Pakistans defeat at the hands of Indian forces in the 1971 war has mysteriously gone missing from the high-security national museum here. Disappearance of the weapon, which was handed over by Pakistans Lt Gen A K A Niazi to the then chief of Eastern Command Lt Gen J S Aurora while surrendering along with 93,000 troopers, was detected this morning, police sources said. Police has detained an official of the navy, which was reportedly manning the gallery where the weapon of historic importance was kept on the first floor of the building. The detained man petty officer Akbar Ali is being suspected in the theft, police sources said. Police was informed after the theft was noticed and an investigation was immediately launched into the incident, they said. Investigation of the case was handed over to the Crime Branch within hours. Several people, including the personnel of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Navy and employees of the museum were questioned by police in connection with the incident. According to preliminary details, although overall protection of the museum is with CISF, security of the gallery where the pistol was kept was being looked after by naval personnel as they had put up some exhibition nearby, police sources said. Two naval policemen were on guard in the particular gallery when the disappearance was detected, they said. A CISF spokesman said it had no role in the security of the floor as it was being looked after by the navy and the museum guards. A navy spokesman, however, asserted that its personnel were not involved in security which was the job of CISF. Security of the museum, housing unique items of national and international importance, was handed over to CISF more than a year back after intelligence reports suggested that it was on the target list of Pakistan-backed terrorists. MUMBAI, June 28: Bollywood actress Shilpa Shettys statement was today recorded by a special team of Surat Police in connection with alleged threats issued by her parents to Gujarat-based saree tycoon Pankaj Agarwal to recover money. The four-member team led by Inspector D D Damor, which arrived here yesterday, also recorded the statements of several witnessess in the case, including S Sunder Shekhar, who is reliably understood to be the adopted son of Haji Mastan. Police, though, did not confirm whether Shekhar was the adopted son. The team visited the Versova residence of the Shettys in north-west Mumbai to record her statement. Shilpa, who was away on a shoot, arrived here this afternoon. While the visiting police officials declined to provide details of Shilpas statement, Senior Inspector B V Ramani, when contacted in Surat by UNI correspondent, confirmed that the actress was questioned. Mr Ramani is the senior officer handling investigations of this case. The team will also record the statement of Shilpas former secretary, John, Mr Ramani added. While her father Surender Shetty is currently in judicial custody in Surat after surrendering to police on June 20, her mother Sunandas bail plea will come up before a Surat court on June 30. Shilpa had featured in advertisements of the Praful Sarees, owned by Agarwal, for a contractual period of one year, but the company allegedly overran the advertisements for over four years and the Shettys claimed that about Rs 80 lakh was still due to them. Police say the Shettys enlisted the help of Malaysia-based don Fazal-ur-Rehman to recover the dues from Agarwal, who later lodged a complaint with the Umra Police in Surat. Surat Police claimed to have taped telephonic conversation between the Shetty couple and Agarwal. (UNI) |

From Ahmed Ali Fayyaz SRINAGAR, June 28: It was in no way reminiscent of the red carpet receptions given to Jawahar Lal Nehru and Indira Gandhi decades ago. It was no match to this capital citys historical welcome to Morarji Desai, arranged by Mirwaiz Farooq and Maulana Masoodi in 1977. It was decidedly no answer to Giani Zail Singhs navigation rally on the Jhelum, organised by Sheikh Abdullah in 1980. Nevertheless, theres no disputing the fact that the President APJ Abdul Kalams visit to Government College for Women on Maulana Azad Road is history in the post-militancy era in Jammu & Kashmir. Happening weeks after the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayees addressing a 20,000-strong gathering of Kashmiris at Sonwar and the Congress president Sonia Gandhis 12,000-strong rally at Baramulla, Abdul Kalams passage to Valley in itself carries no politics. What, however, has the President achieved for the Indian nation may only be the wild dream of consummate politicians. As Kalams bulletproof cavalcade crashed into this centre of learning, 200 studentsone hundred each in two columns in white milky uniform provided the ceremonial clapping. As many as 47 students had mugged up a myriad of questions to be put to the scientist-philosopher. Another group of 150 girls had prepared themselves for participation in a variety programme. The only matter of disappointment was that just 1,000 students had the permission of attending the Presidents function and remaining 4,500 had been asked to enjoy a holiday at home. Constraints of space and security reasons were the official excuse. Watching fanfare on political occasions is nothing new to the Valley since 1995-96. Environmental activists and NGOs have also been organising colourful functions. However, never before has a representative centre of academics and learning accorded this kind of welcome to an "Indian" dignitary after the outbreak of secessionist militancy in 1989. The ridiculous in Jammua Fidayeen strike on a military formationhad no bearing on the sublime in Kashmir. Immediately after the Principal, Nusrat Andrabi, escorted the President to his seat, a group of the girl studentseach one of them a Kashmiri Muslimpresented the National Anthem. Jana Gana Mana was well on the lips of every participant, including a Professor who has been organising and attending Sajjad Lones pro-Azadi rallies. The National Anthem is followed by a welcome song Gulposh wadiyoon mein Abdul Kalam Aaye by another group of students attired in typical Kashmiri costumes. Yasmeen Ashai, a student of BA (Final), presents the welcome address and glorifies the contribution of Lal Ded, Habba Khatoon and Arini Maal to Kashmirs culture and secular ethos. Next comes a group of students in colourful Kashmiri, Dogri and Ladakhi attire. It performs in the vernacular dance form of Rof, followed by folk dances of Jammu and Leh. And, without a pause there comes the famous Hafiz Nagma Zoon gaya obras tsayay lo lo, dooran chhe maraan grayay lolo. Kalam watches it all with rapt attention, sipping Kehwa with Governor Lt Rtd S K Sinha, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Deputy CM Mangat Ram Sharma. Suddenly a profusely decorated bride occupies the mandap in escort of two ladies and yet another carries the bridal fumes of Wuda and Ispand in a craftily fabricated fire-pot. Two columns of nine girls each, with the bride in the centre, present the traditional wedding songs, Wanwun. As the Chief Minister interprets and the President smiles at every pause, the well-rehearsed Wanwun goes on live over private television channels Malinichi kunza kar maji hawalai ada nair wariwiki sawalai.... Wuniktaam kermai hairi bon rachhi maji hinz taachi gara gatshkhai.... Hawalai kermakh peeri peerans suy rachham chaanis shuri panas. With Muftis help, Kalam is visibly impressed, not only by the pun and alliteration in stanzas but also by the pathos generated to mark the brides parting with her parents. Kalams speech is nothing short of a sermon. He stresses on knowledge, education, beauty, righteousness, harmony, peace and order. He makes the whole gathering of 1,000 girl students recite: "Where theres righteousness in heart, theres beauty in character. Where theres beauty in character, theres harmony in home. Where theres harmony in home, theres order in nation. Where theres order in nation, theres peace in the world". He also refers to Lal Ded and reads out English translation of one of her verses. He says that he is immensely impressed by the sublime beauty of Jammu & Kashmir, its people and places. The President explains how beauty is integral to religionthe divine package. He reveals how the priests in Kerala had removed the church and the homes of monks and nuns and given the site of Thumba to his mentor Dr Vikram Sara Bhai, the father of Indian space research. Sara Bhai wanted to establish an observatory and a research centre at Thumba in 1960s. Kalam said that his association with Kashmir was nostalgic as Sara Bhai and he had frequently visited Gulmarg to set up an ISRO installation. Out of 47 students, only three could pose their questions to the President. In reply, Kalam explained to them that the prospects of Kashmiri women were "unlimited" in the field of biotechnology, bio-informatics and food processing. According to him, 4000 million tonnes of food were required and consumed in India. A student desired the President to elaborate his Vision 2020Indias transit from a developing country to a developed one in the next 17 years. Dr Kalam explained that 260 million people in India lived below poverty line. He said that the countrys GDP, which was between 4.5 and 5, required to be doubled with innovative measures and planning. According to him, education. agriculture, food processing, tele-medicine, tele-education and infrastructureparticularly water and communicationwould have to be the top priority areas. Dr Kalam did not agree with a student that brain drain was eating into the vitals of Indian talent and intellect. He argued that only 10 to 20% of Indian professionals were going to overseas to study further or for earning their livelihood. |
RSS chief supports statehood for Jammu, UT status to Ladakh Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, June 28: Justifying the demands for statehood to Jammu and Union territory status to Ladakh regions, the Rashtria Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief K S Sudershan today held the successive state governments responsible for increasing discrimination with two regions of the State. Addressing a function organized by the RSS in connection with concluding ceremony of 20 day long first and second Varg (camp) for its volunteers at Ved Mandir, Ambphalla this evening, Sudershan said the discrimination is not confined to only one field. "What can be more injustice with the region that Jammu having more area and population than the Kashmir valley has less number of Assembly and Parliament seats. Besides out of 1,55,000 jobs filled during the last seven years, only 15,000 unemployed youths from Jammu region were employed while rest of the posts were given to Kashmir", he alleged. Shri Sudershan made it clear that if the people really want to come out of the discrimination they have to launch a decisive movement for statehood and UT status to Ladakh. "This is the only viable solution of the problem so far as the geography of the State is concerned," he added. "Though it is a viable solution but the Union Government, comprising several coalition partners, are not unfortunately unanimous on the issue. They want to give the problem a secular tinch forgetting that Hindus have been forced to flee from Kashmir and a big conspiracy is going on for Muslimisation of Jammu too", he added. Lambasting the former Prime Minister, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, he held him responsible for all the crisis which the country is facing today. "Whether it is Kashmir problem or Tibet, they are his creation"as he acted on the advise of Lord Mount Batten, the then Governor General of India , he added. He said, had Nehru not given liberty to Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah and refused to send troops to Kashmir on the request of then Mahraja of the state, Mr Hari Singh, the situation could have been different at present. He said, it was Nehru who against the wishes of then Home Minister, Sardar Patel and army officers declared cease fire when Pak intruders were on run in 1947. It was again he who later took the Kashmir to UNO making it an international issue, he added. He blamed Nehru for bringing Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah who insisted for Special Constitutional status for J&K that is the main barrier between the relations of the State with rest of the country. Besides Nehru, Shri Sudershan also lambasted the then Prime Minister of J&K, Mr Ram Chand Kak for ill advising the then Maharaja against the merger of J&K with India. He said, the role played by the duo was the cause of the present crisis. The RSS chief while opposing any give and take formula on Kashmir, criticized the recent statement of the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr L K Advani in Chicago on give and take formula on Kashmir, saying what India has to offer for. "We have already gifted two fifth of our territory to Pakistan in 1947", he added. He said, the Indian territory is under the forcible occupation of Pakistan and out of it, she had gifted 5000 sq km area to China. The countrys Parliament had passed a resolution in 1994 to get back the portion of territory lying in the forcible occupation of Pak and we have to stick to it , he added. RSS chief declared that peace (Shanti) talks will not yield any result, till Pakistan is not taught a lesson and given a befitting reply for its wrong doings, the situation will not improve. He said, the people of Pakistan wanted to live in peace with India and have good neighborly relations with us but these were the rulers from Ayub Khan to General Musharaf who wanted to have strained relations with India. He said, India is facing a serious threat from the foreign infiltrators like Pakistan and Bangladesh and if the people of country will not rise to the occasion this will have serious political consequences in future. He said after J&K they are eyeing on Assam where we are also facing the Bangladeshi infiltration for decades together. Recently in an all parties meeting at Assam the issue of dual citizenship for the state was raised and the idea propped up due to dual citizenship that Jammu and Kashmir has. Shri Sudershan made it clear that Muslims are only safe in India than Pakistan but they should consider this territory their nation also. He maintained that no Muslim nation came to rescue of Iraq in recent war as they preferred their own national interests first and likewise Indian Muslims should also consider India their own nation. Expressing serious concern over forcible conversions of Hindus to other faiths like Islam and Chrisitinity he said, this has political motivation behind it and should be resisted strongly. He said, the India is the nation which respects all religions as we believe in cosmopolitan culture. This is the reason that Christians who were not allowed to propagate their philosophy in China and Russia were welcomed in India, he added. But instead of living in complete faith and harmony, they remained busy in conversions by making statements that after Europe our eyes are on India. Sending a clear message to nation that India is a one nation and RSS is developing this national outlook, Mr Sudershan made a dig at those who are raising the domicile issue in some parts of the country. |
Excellent work by troops in J&K: President Excelsior Correspondent URI, June 28: Indian Armed Forces have to play "a very important role" in defending the country against the "enemy", President, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, emphasized, before concluding his three-day visit to Jammu, Ladakh and Valley on Saturday. He did not identify the "enemy" while addressing troops of the 12th Brigade of the Army at a border post in Uri. Obviously, he had Pakistan in his mind when he briefly talked about the role of Indian Armed Forces in defending the country against the "enemy". Equally important role for the Armed Forces, Dr Kalam pointed out, was to "bring peace in the civilian society around you". It was the first-ever Presidential visit to a forward location on the Line of Control (LoC). He was all praise for the role of the Armed Forces in defending the country in a "complex" situation involving religious, ideological and market conflicts. The world, he explained, "is facing a new phenomenon of tackling religious conflict, ideological conflict and then market conflict". "All the combinations we have to handle", he said and emphasized: "In such a complex situation, our Armed Forces have to play a very important role defending the country when the enemy comes". The President felicitated the troops on what he described as "excellent" work they have done in the field, in their missions and in the interaction with the people making them smile. The President, who is also the Supreme Commander of Armed Forces, used another term "superiority" during his laudatory comments on the troops role. He said: "The way you all look, the way you fight, the way you speak and act definitely has superiority and excellence". He told the troops: "You are the defender of the borderin short, Jammu and Kashmir. And you are one of the important forces to defend the country". Underlining the importance of the Armys role, the President said that one billion people of India want to live in a happy, peaceful and prosperous and safe India seeking to become a developed nation by 2020. Shahbaz Sharif's wife, daughters asked to leave Pak ISLAMABAD, June 28 : In an apparent reaction to the recent criticism by deposed Premier Nawaz Sharif against President Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan Government has ordered his brother Shahbaz Sharifs wife and daughters to leave the country and join the exiled family in Jeddah. "They will be sent today," Pakistan Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat said reacting to reports of police laying seize to the residence of Sharifs relatives in Lahore to find Shahbazs wife Nusrat and two daughters Rabia and Jaweria. Hayat told private Geo TV that Sharif and his family had accepted a deal with the military regime in 2000 and left for Jeddah and they would not be allowed to return and take part in politics here. He said that Shahbazs wife and daughters were allowed to return as the family wanted the daughters to get married and asked for two months time to complete the marriage. "Now it is over three months. There is no sign of marriage". The sudden Government action against Shabazs family was apparently the fallout of Sharifs recent interview in which he castigated Musharraf for scuttling the Lahore peace process and held him squarely responsible for the Kargil conflict. The "deportation" of the three was delayed after Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali "reversed" the order to send them yesterday, daily `The Nation reported. Jamali even phoned Shahbazs son Mian Hamza yesterday after negotiating with the top officials to assure him that his family members would not be forced to leave. But the Prime Ministers orders were superseded following direct orders from Washington where Musharraf is on a visit, the daily said. (PTI) |
