Enquiry into match-fixing based on newspaper reports: BCCI

HYDERABAD, June 26: Cricket board today informed a city civil court that though the decision to hold preliminary inquiry into match-fixing allegations against former captain Mohammed Azharuddin was based on newspaper reports, regular inquiry was based on the findings of preliminary inquiry.

"Though newspaper reports cannot be relied upon in matters of this nature, they cannot also be brushed aside as insignificant in view of the fact that they create awareness among the people and sometimes suspicion too," BCCI counsel informed second additional chief judge, hearing the suit filed by Azharuddin challenging his life ban from cricket.

Stating that "a widespread malafide campaign was unleashed against BCCI for its failure to maintain the dignity of test cricket", the counsel said the board being the custodian of developing healthy cricket culture could not brush aside the allegations.

"It is an issue of wide public interest and hence BCCI was compelled to order a preliminary inquiry," he said.

Pointing out that every attempt was made to afford Azharuddin a fair opportunity to buttress his point of view, the counsel said the former captain chose to attribute malice and prejudice to both the inquiry officer as well as BCCI when the result was not in his favour.

The counsel was responding to a judge’s query regarding the basis for holding inquiry into match-fixing allegations against the former captain and whether any written complaints were received by BCCI for ordering the inquiry. (PTI)

Buchanan gives his mantra for Indian youngsters

KOLKATA, June 26: Australian cricket coach John Buchanan has a simple mantra for youngsters in the Indian team - keep listening to coach John Wright and skipper Sourav Ganguly to taste success in the coming battles against New Zealand and the Aussies.

"This will be the gist of my speech if I’m asked to deliver a lecture to the Indians," Buchanan told newspersons here.

The Aussie, who is here on a whirlwind lecture tour in the country on an invitation from a foreign bank, disclosed that he had utilised the trip to pick up ‘whatever details I can which will come handy keeping in mind the coming Tri series in India and the Indians’ scheduled tour down under next year.

"I won’t say that I am not interested in gathering tips about Indian cricket. I’m collecting whatever details I can, even from gossip," the celebrated coach said.

Buchanan said that he met his Indian counterpart Wright in Bangalore last night.

"The meeting was informal, but I think he has picked up a few things about the Australian team," he said. Buchanan said the World Cup and the coaches’ conference in Bangalore also figured in his discussions with Wright.

Describing the present Indian team as ‘stronger’ and ‘younger’ than the ones in the recent past, Buchanan said the rich experiences of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid backed up by youngsters like Sanjay Bangar, Virender Sehwag and Dinesh Mongia solidified the side’s batting line up.

In the bowling department, he made special mention of left arm pacer Zaheer Khan.

"The young ones are really improving, though I feel they are yet to be tested that much in international cricket," he said.

On his team’s success in the World Cup, Buchanan said that the Aussies felt confident after their convincing victory against India in the second group league match.

"Thereafter we planned our strategies for the league outings, super six and the semi final. And when we reached the final, our target was to play perfectly," he said. (PTI)

Streak claims 200th wicket as England struggle

NOTTINGHAM (England), June 26: Heath Steak became the first Zimbabwean to take 200 one-day international wickets as England were restricted to 191 for eight off 50 overs in the opening match of a Triangular series today.

Streak removed Vikram Solanki early then dismissed the in-form opener Marcus Trescothick for a run-a-ball 38 as the innings deflated after an encouraging start.

All rounder Andrew Flintoff top-scored with a cautious 53.

The home team, put in on a dry and cracking pitch, had rattled along to 50 for the loss of Solanki in the ninth over before two big wickets fell for one run.

Skipper Michael Vaughan, still looking to convince in one-dayers, produced a couple of attractive blows in his 13 before an attempted pull off medium-pacer Sean Ervine soared high into the air to wicketkeeper Tatenda Taibu.

Trescothick, fresh from a one-day century against Pakistan last week, hit eight fours, most through point or to square leg, before he late-cut streak straight to Grant Flower at wide second slip.

From 57 for three, England’s middle order lost their way completely against some accurate spin bowling.

The first 15 overs had cost 80 runs while there were just 38 off the second 15 as Robert Key, on his debut, and Anthony McGrath looked short on shots and ideas.

Key scratched 11 before he was bowled by a fine delivery from left-Armer Raymond price which beat the bat to take off. McGrath, meanwhile, eeked out 14 off 42 deliveries before he was run out by a good throw from Travis Friend.

That left England on 144 for five with 10 overs remaining and Flintoff’s soft dismissal, top-edging a leg-side shot from spinner Doug Marillier, ensured no late fireworks.

Price was the pick of the bowlers with one for 20 off 10 tight overs, while fast-medium Andy Blignaut, whose first four overs cost 38, took two wickets in two balls in the last over.

Revive Hockey by developing nurseries in Schools

By Manjeet Singh

JAMMU: Lack of activities at the club level amidst insufficient encouragement within the institutions have led to the degradation of once most popular game of hockey in Jammu and Kashmir.

And to infuse new blood in the dying game in this part of the country, there is a dire need of developing nurseries at the school level and activating the defunct hockey clubs affiliated with Jammu and Kashmir Hockey Association.

There is tremendous scope not only in the game of Hockey but in Football, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Volleyball, Wrestling and water sports, provided the people associated with these games come out of hibernation and start molding the management of the educational institutions who can play a pivotal role in creating nurseries.

It is quite possible to pick around 40 to 50 talented players at young out of a total strength of a school varying from 1000 to 1500. And, for that matter, the concerned associations have to be active and work with more zeal and enthusiasm.

Once these associations come out of their selected district and state level competitions and start thinking of holding batch-wise (age groups) tournaments round the year, there will be dramatical change in the sports.

The old tradition of sending the overage players for lower age group competitions and that too favouring some near and dears at the national level adds fuel to the fire. Most of the State associations are interested more in winning medals by hook or crook at the cost of better playing conditions and developing reasonable infrastructure.

Before giving final nod to various national level competitions in the state, the State Government must look into the standard of the game and the activities thereof in the state. The money used in these competitions should be diverted in making the grounds within the school and college playable.

Only creating nurseries in different events will not fulfill any purpose until their proper adjustments, when they are at their peak, are made. Government should once again think over the revival of the departmental teams of Hockey by absorbing the top players atleast on contract basis, if not permanently.

With the unite efforts of the Department of Youth Services and Sports and State Sports Council, the old hockey fields should be revived. These include that of Government High School, Bhore Camp, Higher Secondary School, R S Pura, KV No. 1, Gandhi Nagar, Guru Harkrishan Public School, Government High School, Gole Gujral, Green Field, Higher Secondary School, Samba, Sports Stadium, Hira Nagar and Sports Stadium, Udhampur.

After activating these old hockey fields, the Association must ensure that there should be atleast 10 tournament in each age group spreading over the year. The defunct clubs among the 40 affiliated clubs, should be given a warning by the Association and new active clubs be given the affiliation.

As told to Excelsior

Manjeet Singh has remained one of the top goal-keepers of the J&K Hockey team and honoured with the gold medal by the then State Governor, Girish Chander Sexana after he was declared best goal-keeper of the grade-I tournament of the Indian Hockey Federation, All India Indira Gold Cup at Jammu in 1991.

Presently, Manjeet is working as Physical Education Teacher with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. He is also general secretary of the J&K Korfball Association.

Wimbledon Championship
Henman sharpens up as Pierce rolls on

LONDON, June 26: A rejuvenated Tim Henman put his sluggish start to the Wimbledon Championships well behind him today, surging into the third round with a 6-4 6-4 6-3 win over Frenchman Michael Llodra.

A packed centre court crowd and more than a thousand "Henman hillbillies" glued to a giant screen in the grounds roared the 10th seed on as he once again stands as a lone British survivor at the grasscourt Grand Slam.

No Briton has won his home slam since Fred Perry in 1936 nor reached the final since Bunny Austin in 1938. Henman has reached the semi-finals on four occasions but always fallen just short.

If he is to stand a chance of rewriting British tennis history this year, he is likely to have to overcome sixth seed David Nalbandian.

Nalbandian is an Argentine baseliner who has played Wimbledon just once before. However, despite his fondness for lurking at the back of the court, last year he reached the final on his debut.

The burly Argentine showed he is in fine form again in Southwest London, pulverising Brazil’s Andre Sa 6-2 7-5 6-2 on court one. Iin the women’s draw, two former Grand Slam champions showed form of old to advance.

Eighth seed Jennifer Capriati thrashed Swiss Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian 6-2 6-1 and, more impressively, unseeded Mary Pierce ousted 14th seed Eleni Daniilidou 6-4 6-1.

The powerful former Australian and French Open champion, now ranked 86, brushed aside Daniilidou on a sun-bathed court two to set up a showdown with American Lisa Raymond.

The victory was 28-year-old Pierce’s second impressive victory of the tournament. She whitewashed her first-round opponent 6-0 6-0 and is on course for fourth round meeting with reigning French Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne.

"I feel like I’m playing well, but I know I still have lots of work to do," Pierce said. "I have a very aggressive game so it’s important for me to be in good shape."

Fifteenth seed Elena Dementieva, of Russia, beat Spain’s Arantxa Parra 6-1 6-1 and 10th seed Anastasia Myskina beat Lina Krasnoroutskaya 6-1 6-4 in an all-Russian battle.

Henman, still struggling on his serve after shoulder surgery last November, looked slow and ponderous in his opening round against Czech lucky loser Tomas Zib.

Zib, who had already lost in qualifying but bagged a main draw spot thanks to a withdrawal, did enough to win a set from the Briton despite suffering from a lower back injury.

But on Thursday, Henman looked sharper on centre court, dismissing the French qualifier in just under two hours.

Next up for Henman is another qualifier, Robin Soderling. The Swede beat Gilles Elseneer, of Belgium, 2-6 7-6 6-4 6-3.

Women’s top seed and champion Serena Williams takes on Els Callens later on Thursday, while men’s second seed Andre Agassi faces German Lars Burgsmueller. (AGENCIES)
