East Bengal lose to Bec Tero Sasana in LG Cup Football

JAKARTA, July 14: East Bengal went down fighting 0-1 to Thailand’s Champion Club Bec Tero Sasana in their opening group D match in the LG Cup Asean Club Football Championships here today.

The all-important goal was scored by Thai striker T Chaiman in the 83rd minute after the National Football League champions battled on even terms with Bec, who have made it to the final of the AFC Champions League, till the fag end of the match.

Chaiman’s goal came four minutes after the Thai goalkeeper brought down Malswatulunga on the edge of the penalty box but the referee did not rule in East Bengal’s favour.

The Kolkata side will now take on Army Football Club, Philippines, in their second and last group match on Wednesday which will seal their fate in the championship. The top two teams from each of the four groups will progress to the quarterfinals.

After a barren first session, which saw both teams fritter away a few chances, the game slowed down towards the middle of the half before the pace picked up after changing ends.

East Bengal, who were attacking with only Baichung Bhutia upfront and Alvito D Cunha and Bijen Singh as the two wingers, looked more dangerous in the second session after coach Subash Bhowmick introduced Malswamtunga in the 18th minute of the second session. Both teams took time to get used to the thick green turf where the ball travelled a bit slow.

East Bengal’s first threatening move came in the eighth minute when Alvito D’cunha tested the Thai custodian with a firm header. But it was cleanly gathered giving no chance to Bhutia who was waiting to pounce on any slip up.

Two minutes later, East Bengal forced a corner kick but skipper Suley Musah blasted wide after the ball was well curved in from the right corner flag.

Bhutia looked a bit off-colour today and never really threatened the rival defence. But in the 21st minute he almost put Bijen through but the latter was ruled offside.

At the other end, bec were relying on counter attacks but the Bengal defence marshalled by Musah was equal to the challenge.

Bec forced a corner in the two minutes of injury time added to the first half but it was cleared to safety by the Indians.

Changing ends, the pattern continued till the arrival of Malswatulunga who opened up the game with his nippy runs. Also excelling for the Kolkatans were Brazilian Douglas D’silva and the hardworking Surkumar Singh.

The luck of the venue, where India won the 1962 Asian Games gold medal beating South Korea in the final with goals from legendary Jarnail Singh and P K Banerjee, also did not come to the rescue of as East Bengal lost the battle with just seven minutes to go. (PTI)

Tiger catches his fans napping

SANDWICH (England), July 14: Tiger Woods began the final honing of his game for this week’s British Open at the crack of dawn today and literally caught most of his fans napping.

The world number one makes a habit of beginning his practice rounds at around 6am and he was able to play the first few holes at Royal St George’s relatively unhindered before the usual Tiger entourage caught up with him by the seventh.

Reports last week had suggested the 2000 Open champion was struggling with a knee injury but the 27-year-old looked to be swinging and walking as smoothly as ever around the tough links course having flown in over the weekend.

Woods’s tee shot at the opening 442-yard hole gave him an immediate indication, though, of the severity of a course he has yet to compete on.

He pushed his drive only marginally right but the ball nestled down in knee-high rough and defied the efforts of his early-bird followers — three sponsor’s representatives, two policemen plus his playing partner Charles Howell III — to find it.

One lucky punter this week may stumble across the prized golfing possession of a genuine Tiger Woods lost ball but there will not be many on offer.

For the most part, on a glorious, almost windless morning, Woods kept his shots on the straight and narrow which they will need to be if he is to wrest the title off Ernie Els on the 7,106-yard, undulating and pot-bunkered layout.

Woods, out practising with his friend howell 90 minutes before the next player took to the links, stretched his round to just under four hours as he experimented with chips and putts on the treacherously quick greens before dodging the autograph hunters in a waiting buggy.

By then, some 1,000 fans had caught up to walk the last few holes with woods, who won his last tournament, the 100th Western Open, by five shots a fortnight ago.

Typically, Woods is keeping his thoughts to himself for now. He is scheduled to give a news conference later in the week, but fans will have to set their alarm clocks early to see him in action when he returns to the course on Tuesday. (AGENCIES)

Hewitt will hit form for Davis semis: Fitzgerald

MELBOURNE, July 14: Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt will be back to his best for the Davis Cup semi-final tie against Switzerland in September, Australia’s captain John Fitzgerald said today.

The 22-year-old Australian was beaten in the first round at Wimbledon by Croatian Ivo Karlovic and slumped last week from second to fifth in the 12-month ATP rankings.

"He’s enough of a professional to bounce back and it was a very unusual match-up for him," Fitzgerald told reporters.

"It took a guy who was six foot 10 (2.08 metres) and serving like a genius to beat him."

"Also the (Wimbledon centre) court is very green on the first day and it turned into a different game." (AGENCIES)

Indian spikers proved their potential: Coach

NEW DELHI, July 14: India might have missed the world champion’s tag by a whisker in the World under-19 Volleyball Tournament in Thailand, but coach G E Sridharan said the performance has established the country’s potential in the game at international level.

"No doubt it is quite disappointing to lose in the final despite putting up a brave fight. But our performance has made the world aware of what we can do in future," Sridharan told reporters at the airport soon after the arrival of the team from thailand.

India, who started as underdogs in the championship, stunned several higher ranked teams including Brazil in the league stage of the competition before losing the final.

Though India put up a spirited performance in the final and even took lead in the first two sets, they faltered at the end to lose the match 1-3 against Brazil.

"You cannot afford to make mistakes against teams like Brazil who have won the title six times so far. Though we played really well to beat Brazil in the league match, unfortunately we made a few errors in the final which proved decisive in the end," said the coach.

The team was accorded a warm reception on their arrival here in the afternoon and the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) president Sivanthi Adityan and secretary general K Murugan flew in from Chennai to welcome the players.

Sridharan attributed India’s fine show in the championship to hard work and said the result could boost the game in the country.

"The boys had worked hard for the championship and they put in their best effort there. All played to their potential and it was a complete teamwork.

"I hope the showing will definitely boost the morale of the players and the game in a big way in the country. Hopefully people will show more interest in the game after this."

Captain of the side Rathish Nair lauded the performance of spiker Sanjay Kumar and S Kamaraj, who was adjudged the best setter in the competition.

"All played well but these two contributed immensely in our progress to the final.’’

"We played well in blocking, attacking and serving but Kamraj proved that he is the best setter in the world at the moment," Nair said.

He also said the second-place finish was just the beginning of a "glorious future."

"We are keen to take the game to new heights and I am confident that we have the potential to do so. Beating many formidable opponents in Thailand was not just a fluke. It was the outcome of a lot of hardwork, dedication and determination." (PTI)
